  1. I would like to correct you on this: No player may enter the neutral zone causing an offensive lineman to react immediately. An official shall sound his whistle immediately [Rules 2-18-2-a and 7-1-3-a-4-© Exception] (A.R. 7-1-3-VIII and IX) [s7 and S18].
  2. Sorry but I had to correct you on this: No player may enter the neutral zone causing an offensive lineman to react immediately. An official shall sound his whistle immediately [Rules 2-18-2-a and 7-1-3-a-4-© Exception] (A.R. 7-1-3-VIII and IX) [s7 and S18].
  3. Won't argue with that
  4. Well, Toledo has ole Scooter to thank for their fall. I don't know about the other teams though.
  5. The Last two weeks? UConn, Let's see the Defense gave us the chance to have the lead at halftime, and take the lead on the first play in the third quarter. We Lost 44-10. That sounds like an offense not being on the field long enough to give the D a break problem to me. Last week WMU. We Stopped WMU enough to have a chance to win the game. Despite an offense that came out and did nothing in the 3rd quarter. The Defense won the Can't game because of the turnovers it forced. I believe the Defense gave us the lead in the Army game that we won. No. I really can't say that the defense has been "terrible". It's always funny to me how fans will blame the defense for losing games when a team has an impotent offense. If you the O can't eat up the clock it doesn't matter how good your defense is. You are going to see them tire out and make mistakes.
  6. The 3-4 is no different then the 3-3-5 we are using now. Wayne Cobham would be the 2nd OLB. The truth is that the 3-3-5 is up to Akron and WVU now. It's a new style defense designed to compete with teams like Florida who try to get to the edge on the majority of their plays. Other then USF, WVU does pretty well with their defense in the Big East. Akron does very well with it's defense against the MAC. Since the idea is to win the MAC (which the 3-3-5 has done) I don't see a need for a change.
  7. Congratulations you just described the flaws inherent in every defense. If you run a 4-3 the O-Line still out numbers you. If you run a 3-4 guess what? The O-line out numbers you. The argument you make against the 3-3-5 can be made against any defensive scheme you can think of. It is the innate challenge of playing defense.However. If you run a 4-3 (which it seems most of you anti 3-3-5 want to run) with a line that is not talented you will get blown off the ball. You will give up the outside because your ends will be hook blocked or kicked out all day long. In order to run a 4-3 you need 3 great defensive linemen. Not just 1 as in the 3-4 or 3-3-5. You are going to challenge this. But let me try to explain. If I take someone like Almondo Sewell and put him in a 4-3 he has too options. Bull rush the tackle, or beat him with speed. Now If I take Almondo Sewell in a 3 man front he has 4 options. Drop into coverage, stunt with a linebacker, bull rush the tacke, or beat the tackle with his speed. A 4 man front is designed to stale mate the O-line. You hope that one of your men is strong enough to draw a double team negating the one man advantage the o-line has. You can not attack in a 4-3. If you do, you give up a seam or the middle of the field. 3-4 and 3-3-5 are attacking defenses. The idea is to confuse the blocking scheme with stunts and blitz packages. The offense may know you are sending 5 but they don't know which 5. Plus all of you want to judge defenses in historical terms. How many yards did they give up? The measurement of the modern defense is how many times did they make the opponent turn the ball over? Did they give the offense a chance to win?
  8. I managed to post the message twice So me
  9. Well "replace" would suggest removal of the JAR and that is very unlikely. The most likely scenario (if a new arena were to be built) is that the JAR remains with some renovations. This JAR would be used for training purposes (practice); low profile women's games, volleyball, and hopefully a new state or the art rilfe range. You will notice that I did say low profile women's games. Games against BGSU, or even the MAC women's tournament could be held in a new Akron Arena. The Arena would also give the Hockey club the opportunity to expand to a team or for the University of Akron to create a woman's hockey program. The JAR would pretty much stay put as a very usable facility.
  10. It's one block, about 100 yards at most from the polsky deck to Canal Park. That is not a big deal.Have you ever been downtown for the 4th? 40 thousand plus. I think the city infrastructure can handle that every day. The idea is to make an area where things are going on all the time. The area you referenced is flagged for commercial office/research expansion.
  11. Despite the fact that the Beacon is finally writing news about the exciting win Saturday night (on Tuesday, only 3 days late and no the AP article tucked into the corner of Sunday's paper doesn't count) it's time to start thinking about the Owls. After the NIU win they are 1-5 (with close games against UConn (5 point loss); BGSU (13 point loss) and Navy (11 point loss). Should we be afraid? Not as much as when we take on Buffalo but this is an important game being a MAC East opponent none-the-less. What is everyone's take on this Temple team?Adam DiMichelle seems to be their Dan LeFevour or Julian Edleman.
  12. I'll repeat:1) The city of Akron desires a downtown Arena, they would be footing most of the bill for the development2) We do NEED a new arena because it helps with recruiting, and it's the only way to assure games against the likes of Cincinatti, Pittsburgh, OSU being played at home. 3) If the city of Akron is willing to do this with in the next 3-5 years (which is highly plausible) then the University should be doing everything in it's power to help with it.The three reasons are good enough for me to support a new ArenaThink about it, we have state of the art facilities for golf, football, soccer, track. Why shouldn't we have state of the art facilities for the winningest team on campus?
  13. Yeah you could, although it isn't real close either... and that's assuming the U would allow it for that use at non university events. There's some surface level parking that's between Polsky and where the arena would be (although a little too close to Mangos) but it's still a little far compared to what's across the street right now.If they have any sense at all, they'd put a deck in that, although it wouldn't be terribly big. That's one of the handy things about downtown, a lot of the buildings that got dilapidated were knocked down for parking, so it's usually plentiful.Every Aeros game that I have went to, and a lot of the times that I visit the downtown bars, I park in the Polsky Deck, right next to a cruiser. It's the most secure parking area there is. It's one block away from the Aeros stadium. The U has always allowed it to be used for Aeros games (they make profit from charging to park). I really am starting to doubt your knowledge of the Akron area.
  14. Now some people had issue with a few sarcastic comments I had about Can't State mascots. Some people may consider "National Guard Targets" and "Dead Hippies" as being some what callous and in poor taste. You will say that said individuals died because of an overbearing government trying to squash human rights. I say the National Guard was there to prevent Terrorism and things such as this from happening...University of WisconsinEither way the shooting is the sole reason that anyone knows who Can't State is and therefore it is grounds for satirical comments. (Free speech and all that)
  15. I agree there should be a Zippy smiley or icon of some sort.
  16. That's getting a bit harsh, don't you think? No, I really feel that Zippy is the best mascot in the country.
  17. I went to try and throw Can't a bone and vote for their mascot so that it was involved in next years capitalone mascot challenge; however, I looked and they had Can't flushes (which must be a different school) Because I swear that it has always been the Can't State National Guard Targetsor was it the Dead Hippies? Anyway neither of those were available so I just kept voting for the greatest mascot in the country...Zippy!
  18. Woot and GP1 are correct. There is a lot of JD and program bashing right now. This team has a very solid chance to be bowl eligible and in the MAC Championship game. We do have three very tough games to play in our division (BGSU, Miami, and OU). I believe we have a chance to win 7 games and finish with a very respectable 9-3 record. Will we? That depends on how well these kids (and yes they are inexperienced kids) can come together on offense. I will settle for 7-5 in a rebuilding year as long as we get the three important wins I mentioned before. So all of you need to keep the faith.
  19. If he was that great of a D1 prospect he should be playing like a "man among boys".Obviously he isn't.
  20. I didn't even want to get involved in this. The University (Buchtel College) was built in an area to the east of Downtown. No neighborhoods (so to speak) existed. There was a collective of houses in Middlebury, but the area to the immediate south of the land the univeristy now sits on was pretty much vacant. The neighborhood you talk about was built up around the university to accomodate off campus housing. The Zip strip was designed in the 50's to accomodate the university students. Since then (and because of fair housing laws) many people have moved into the neighbor hood. The Plasma center was set up sometime in the 80's to take advantage of people who needed money. The city (not the school) needs to do something about the "ghetto" around University Park. As well as the Polsky building (the Mayflower anyone). I used to run into so many dealers and panhandlers down there I started just through the bridges to get back to the main campus. But Phil, (I assume that is your first name) it is a profitable enterprise, that attracts dirty clientelle now. So yes it does need to go.
  21. The majority of individuals on this board are true Zips fans. Through and through. We support our teams and show support for all atheletics/extracurricullar groups at The University of Akron.Since the UConn game though I have noticed a lot of complete disdain for the current football coaching staff. Treating the season as a throw away before we even get to the games that matter. True, a goal of the program is to win against a BCS team every year. That is one of 3 regular season goals. The others are win the MAC East and win the MAC Championship. Which inevitably puts us into a bowl game and hopefully another crack at a BCS school. You bash JD as though he hasn't done anything. You say the defense is week. Yet they had created the most turnovers in the MAC, they have made every team struggle against them, and have put is in a spot to compete in every game. You blame JD for bad special teams, and while we don't have Harvey we have still managed to have great returns and turn the kicking game around completely. If there is blame to be layed it should be on Coach Moorehead. The offensive play calling has been offensive. Whether that is a result of having an inexperience core of players or a lack of originality has yet to be determined. However you look at the start of this season realize that we have played above what was expected of us in games that have no bearing on our success other then recruiting and we have succeeded in games we need to succeed in. The Wagon Wheel is home and now the real season begins. We need to show support as our 1-0 Zips go into Western Michigan. We have a chance to get the season rolling before we face the tough MAC East opponents. So have a little faith and make sure you bring everyone you can to the Homecoming game against Temple in two weeks. And GO ZIPS!!!
  22. I was curious if anyone out there knows of a place to find an inexpensive University of Akron tire cover. My wife recently purchased an 07 Liberty and we both thought it would be cool to have the Akron Logo prominently displayed. However while searching the best I can do is a place that does custom jobs (it would be like 250 dollars and cover typically cost between 50-90) there is also the matter that they might not be allowed to use the logo themselves anyway. So if anyone knows of a place to find this, or place that will do it for around 90 bucks please let me know.
  23. During half time of the Can't State vs University of Akron game, Mack Rhoades mentioned that official ground breaking would be January. (that would leave 20 months for construction assuming an early September opening against Kentucky)But I assume that is after ground prep and leveling has taken place. That step was supposed to start in October.
  24. Just for an updateJohnny Adams (a recruit we won't land) and Buchtel 0-5Larry Dawson (a recruit we are fairly likely to land) and North 4-1While I'm at it, I would say that JD should look at this Donta Covington because he is quite the back, Dawson will most likely end up on the defensive side of the ball, and Covington might be a pretty nice spark in a couple of years. (barring grade issues, I haven't heard from Coach Johnson how that is looking)Also if you interested in local talentFirestone vs North tonight 7pm at the Rubber Bowl (this has huge city series title implications)
  25. I thought they were supposed to be the huskies? They look more like this...
