Game 1—@Penn State Nittany Lions
Captain Kangaroo replied to zipsoutsider's topic in Akron Zips Football
You won't know until game day. We have an offense that put up 68 points against Marshall last season. But that was with a healthy Tommy Woodson, and two receivers that are presently in NFL camps. Woodson's September 2017 health after a pretty serious shoulder injury is unknown as of June 2017. His rehab is allegedly on-schedule. Our top 2 WR's have been replaced by a converted QB (Sr. Tre Chapman - former Pitt recruit) and a Redshirt Freshman (Stewart...a PA kid). Kwad Smith and Austin Wolf are legit deep threats. Woodson is very accurate, so if these guys can get separation, we'll have a nice air attack. Our OL is the strength of the offense. They were a great pass blocking crew last season. But didn't get much push on running plays. 4-of-5 guys return...we have a new left tackle - true Soph who was considered the 2nd best player in the Zips 2016 recruiting class. OL gained depth, and will be improved in 2017. RB - Warren "Wrecking" Ball is a 6th year Ohio State transfer that was injured in the Wisconsin game last season. He's an absolute beast if healthy. But health has been an issue for him often in his college career, so it is impossible to bank on him. Bowden may also limit his touches in a game like Penn State, saving him for the less-punishing/more-critical MAC games. Van Edwards is a solid back. But not a game-breaker. Manny Morgan is probably 1/2 a notch below Edwards. So if you ask me how the Zips offense stacks up against the PSU LB's, I'd say "ok," if we are healthy. If you have a solid OL, you can be an effective offensive unit. And the Zips OL is, at worst, in the top half of the MAC. -

Dambrot says 'yes' to Duquesne this time

Mike Hughes - Duquesne's answer to Newman Williams. -
A couple consecutive 10 win seasons might help too.

Great article on Justin March-Lillard

Why'd we offer him twice?

It isn't a stretch to say there are probably 60+ D-1A teams that would be happy to have a healthy Tommy Woodson as their starting 2017 QB. A "67" ranking seems about right.

The guy that wrote the press release is listed at 5' 7", but word on the street is he's really 5' 7 3/8".

This topic arose last week at the golf outing. The team philosophy is not to bring in one QB per year. The ideal situation is to have one QB in each graduating "class." The Zips now have a true Fr., redshirt Fr., Soph, Junior and Senior QB on the roster. So mission accomplished, I guess.

A Home for Jerome? The Zips coaches spoke a little about Jerome last Friday. They feel his NFL role will ultimately be H-back, or TE. They also feel a team with the patience to work with him for 1 or 2 years will be rewarded with a NFL player...whatever the position may be. He's too raw to contribute to an NFL team this season, but he has the tools to make it if he finds the right situation. A coach also spoke of JoJo and expects that, if he is deemed to small for the NFL, his size and skill set is a perfect fit for the CFL.

Your height fetish is bizarre.

Golf outing is tomorrow. Hopefully some good info is obtained from it.

Thanks! I enjoyed listening to that during lunch. Interesting to learn about the scout-side of local basketball recruiting.

Coleman-Lands to transfer from Illinois

...and it would be nice for the Zips to beat today's crappy, sucky 2017 DePaul program for the same reason. -

Can't argue with that logic... -

You do realize 2016-2017 UA Freshman were in kindergarten during this "recent" victory. -

So when you cite statistics from the 70's, they're relevant. And when someone lists won-loss statistics of the 15 most-recent seasons, they're "cherry-picking." Got it. Speaking of the 70's...how would you rate Goldie Hawn, in 2017? Is she still hot? -

By your standards, Fordham's Seven Blocks of Granite make them a 2017 Division 1 football powerhouse. DePaul pretty-much sucks. -
I watched a few of his on-line videos during lunch, and then watched a few of Antino's highlight videos afterwards. Virshon's are 70% assists/30% shooting. Antino's were 85% shooting/15% assists. Virshon appears to be the first pass-first PG we've had in a while. Maybe since Abreu? Not in the mold of Antino or Noah whatsoever. He shows he can throw down some nasty dunks, so he has the athleticism and hops to play at the MAC level for sure. I look forward to seeing what he's got this fall.

If the fan of any MAC basketball program frets over a listed 6' point guard solely because of his height, they are following the wrong conference. Hey...in his bio picture he looks like he's 12 years old, so maybe he has a little growth left in him?

As far as fun Zips-related reads in May go, that one will be tough to top.

Along with the incredibly important "Akron University" or "The University of Akron" concerns, I think we really need to make sure he knows Zippy is female. That's paramount. Those are the the top two concerns regarding Zips Football, if you ask me.

HUDL videos show Schuyler is one enormous dude... USA Today All New Hampshire First Team Certainly looks like he's worth taking a flyer on as a PWO. With a year's conditioning, he might look pretty good at nose tackle?

If that's the case, then I agree with you. If, after redshirting, we don't get a minute out of the kids, it's probably because they were a mistake. If they don't have the talent, it's best to part ways and the Zips should extend the scholarship to someone that can play. If he is lamenting losing Peter Agba, BJ Gladden or Ty Dalton, I don't get it either. He should be lamenting Dambrot's sub-par recruiting. That's the issue.
