Week 4 - Zips vs. Gamecocks @ 7:30 pm EST
Captain Kangaroo replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
Two Big Ten beatdowns in succession has taken the wind out of my OOC sails. I had planned on heading to the Palmetto state, but I'll save the time, money and PTO days for a nice fall golf trip instead. -
Moved this thread just in a nick of time!đ°

YeahâŠyou see a lot more Jesusâs in baseball and soccer.
-
I prefer the Football Forum to be about football (opponents, games, recruiting, et.), and not taxes and department budgets so I've moved the "Athletic Budget" topic to "Other Sports".

Game time just announced 7:30 pm

ND has recently lost to a mediocre Marshall team, and Cincinnati at home. Awesome, jealousy-inducing win by NIU. But ND is prone to such losses.
-
Amazing how many opponents all time program records get set against the Zips.
-
Weâve looked like a bad Kent State team for roughly 2 full quarters now⊠Looking forward to Colgate I guess. Didnât expect to do any damage to Big 10 teams this season. Ditto SEC teams.
-
4th one of the day to cost us a first down
-
I guess good things happen when you snap the ball before the clock reads 00?
-
In each situation we were nowhere close to snapping the ball when the clock expired. Finley was acting like he had another 10 seconds? Bad drops by Newell, Golden and Polk hurt. I canât remember the last time I saw even a mediocre Zips offense. Maybe that BG game where Blake Hester had his career day?
-
It would be nice if those time outs we neglected to use were helpful on this drive.

There is no GodâŠ

I think the OL is the key to giving us a chance. Give Finley some time and he can do some damage and move the chains. Give Simmons and Kellom some holes. Our D is fine if the O can give them some points, and a few breathers.
-
Heard Finley had a good week of practice and could play today.
-
I assume lots of intramural use too? People think it sits completely unused, sans 5 sparsely attended games per year. Not true. Selling 10k more tickets per game would bring in another $1 million in revenue ($20 per fan x 5 games x 10,000). If you want to do something, you find a way. If you don't, you find an excuse.

Raise the rent for the lacrosse team. SeriouslyâŠI donât have much admiration for a guy that comes in and says âI wouldnât have built that stadiumâ and gets off the hook for life. If we were in the Rubber Bowl the responsible parties would be bemoaning âIf only we had a modern stadium, then I could really take the program to the next levelâŠâ. You can't have it both ways. Itâs Guthrieâs job to fill Infocision seats and increase revenue. I donât see the creativity or effort. Is it easy? No. But holding your hand out for the ESPN and Ohio State welfare checksâŠwho needs an AD if thatâs the best youâve got? $45 mill over 20 year is a chump change ante to be a division 1 football program. Build that stadium today and itâd cost at least $250 million. If Guthrie is any good, he should be on the short list for a P5 job by now. Wonder whoâs sizing him up?

Not surprising. Finley looked like it was painful just to breath last Saturday.

Every so often someone will post on the drain the football team is on the athletic department. Just doing some basic math on the 2024 season - 1.8 million for Ohio State 1.0 million for Rutgers 1.5 million for South Carolina $750,000 for the Kentucky buyout $670,000 ESPN contract Total revenue: $5,720,000 (plus whatever donations, ticket sales etc. are generated) While pulling in all that cash for UA, football lost their training table and have had severe limitations put on the recruiting budget. Grad assistants are another cut someone'd mentioned earlier. How are we supposed to compete?

Iâve talked up Finley a lot based upon his performance in the two summer scrimmages. It stinks that he got pummeled in the OSU game and didnât get a chance to go much beyond â2 Mississippiâ before he got snowed under. He didnât get a chance to show what he can do, which is move the chains and stretch the field. I hope he gets that chance on Saturday, but Iâm not super-confident. I was a little disappointed in Nortonâs effort on the ball that hit his back shoulder and got picked off. The DB wanted the ball more than he did. He needs to be more dialed-in this week. Can the OL make some holes for Simmons and Kellom? That would go a long way in helping our passing game. Our D will show up. Can our offense give them a breather before they get gassed? Itâs all in the hands of the OL. And, a reasonably healthy Finley.

First time Fred Mertz has received a shout out on ZipsNation. đ

I went to the Guardian's game last Saturday. The smell of pot is everywhere. I was at Sam's Club earlier in the day. The meat department might as well have been a dispensary. I really didn't foresee when pot was legalized that it meant you're basically going to smell it 24/7 wherever you go. Especially downtown.

Would you rather have Tahj, now with a full year in Joe's system, or a random Undecuffler-like journeyman? Neither is a great choice, but I think Tahj is about the best #2 we can expect in this day and age. Maybe he moves to the slot WR next season? If he had any aspirations of playing in the NFL, that's what he'd need to do.
