Smaller, Leaner athletic program...
Captain Kangaroo replied to zip81's topic in Akron Zips Football
There's renewed hope for the Liechtenstein women's fencing team to medal in Tokyo. The USA's loss is their gain. If that costs me a regular fry, I'll be pissed. -

Make the pain stop.... Since we cut down the nets after the MAC basketball championship in early March, being a Zips fan has absolutely sucked. One depressing, embarrassing news release after another... -

Another Penn Hills safety replaces Featherstone. Can't go wrong with Penn Hills players. ? -
The Zips version of Dirk Nowitzki

I can't believe he'd redshirt. He'll be 20 years old when MAC play begins this season. He's roughly 6' 10" and has international playing experience. We lost Riak and Sayles. X too. At worst I'd give him "Ali Ali Level" freshman minutes.

MaxPreps_Epps 6' 5", 255 lbs. LT from Georgia -
Reading up on him, it seems like he had some injury problems. That's been the case with a lot of our P5 transfers over the years (Ryan Bain, Warren Ball, Deltron Sands, etc.). They couldn't stay on the field. I hope he's healthy.

Back when cutting sports seemed like the abyss...

After reading that story, I’m a big fan of Idaho President Chuck Staben. -
To take a team that was 2-10, and go 6-6, 10-4 and 8-5 in successive years is a trend in my book. They'd have been a lot better last season if Tyree Jackson didn't listened to bad advice and declared for the draft. I'm "buying" Leipold. Just my opinion.

OK - Buffalo and Ohio are typically among the MAC's better programs.
-
Been on my mind too. Have to trust Groce. It would be nice if a couple P5 transfers were awaiting grades/degrees.
-
Maybe 2% of them. And those grousing were typically fans of "Keith," not the Zips. Anyone with even the smallest basketball acumen saw what Groce was up against during his first couple seasons, and understood there'd be a lot more "L's" than "W's." Those who didn't were predominately pouting that Dambrot was somehow treated unfairly. Poor guy got over a million dollars per season to try and restore the glory of his dad's alma mater. Talk about getting kicked out to the curb.?

I would disagree. Steve Sweich: Elizabeth Forward High School: Associated Press All-Pennsylvania First Team Class AAA choice as a senior ... averaged 24.6 points, 12.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks during his senior campaign ... scored 30 points or more eight times as a senior and 22 times during his scholastic career ... compiled 1,920 career points ... three-time First-Team All-Section 4-AAA choice and was twice named as a Pittsburgh Post Gazette South Fab 5 ... Associated Press All-State Class AAA Third Team, WPIAL Player of the Year and a WPIAL Class AAA First Team choice as a junior ... scored 27.0 points-per-game, grabbed 13.0 boards-per-game and managed 4.0 blocks-a-contest during his junior year ... also earned the McKeesport Daily News and Pittsburgh Post Gazette Player of the Year awards, and was listed in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review Terrific 10 as a junior ... three-year varsity starter and was a part-time varsity performer as a freshman. Mark Kostelac - 2016 News Herald honorable mention squad

Back when cutting sports seemed like the abyss...
Captain Kangaroo replied to DannyHoke's topic in Akron Zips Football
I would prefer the Zips become a D1-A program that is competitive and fun to watch. To me, the on-field results are what everyone should be complaining about. Not the budget. It's in-line with all other MAC schools. Toledo football has shown it's possible to win at a high G5 level, consistently, over multiple coaching regimes, and draw 20k crowds. Toledo is demographically no different than Akron. Why can't we be "Toledo?" Is that asking for the moon? -

I would disagree. If you are a D-1 program, whether you're Ohio State or Akron, a cost of doing business is eating year #5. You can't keep an underperforming, lame duck coach around. If we hired good coaches, then they'd get hired away, and we'd net some cash. That would be refreshing. -

He took over a program with 3 D1-A wins the previous season, and who lost 9 of its 11 defensive starters. He began recruiting at a point in time when most programs had their full class committed. How many games should he have won? 1...2...? I hope he can turn it around. Like any HC, he gets 4 years to show what he can do. -
I would have thought Trevor Brown, Alvin Davis and Lako would have received some sort of camp invite by now?

Yeah, I doubt "redesigning" really means "burning to the ground."
