Akron September opponent's coach in hot water?
UAZipster0305 replied to Dr Z's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
It really is disappointing that in spite of all the things going wrong for the Buckeyes that we won't be able to take advantage of this in the fall. I would have given one of Lee Owen's or JD's team half a chance to produce an upset or at least the 4th quarter threat of one. Too bad because it could have be a huge spring board for taking our program to the next level. As our program is now, the game will still likely be a scrimmage for OSU, and the next level for us is being competitive in the MAC again. Prove me wrong, iCoach. -
You must get all your information from Fox Noise because you are obviously Fair and Balanced. You must get all yours from MSNBC, because you obviously are a liberal that thinks Mr. Vacation while there are 3 wars, high unemployment, horrible economy and earthquakes and tsunamis are ablaze, is ok. One Big Ass Mistake America You can't tell me that earthquakes and tsunamis have anything to do with politics. Obama has nothing to do with those things. And your political perspective is a joke if you are quick to slap a label (be it conservative or liberal) on anyone. Welcome to the world created by Limbaugh, Hannity, Savage, etc. No they don't have anything to do with politics. However, when there is a threat of radio active material coming towards our west coast and some people are nervous, and when we are in a new war, along with the economy the way it is, you would hope our leader would show some leadership and not be taking vacation after vacation. You talk about liberal and cons, yet you only bring up the right hosts. You don't mention the Maddows, or Mahers or any of the MSM lefties. That is pretty telling. For the record, I hated Bush and I hate Obama. The difference is that many that hated Bush like Obama even though Obama is doing a lot of the same things Bush did. Fair point about Maher et al. I don't listen to them either though. And for the record, I think Obama's fiscal policy is terrible. And I don't like his continued support of No Child Left Behind or the Patriot Act either. And Bush and Obama are both sellouts to the major corporations. Between the Bush handouts to the wealthy and Obama's redistribution, the middle class has no chance to survive. Thanks for being big enough to admit they both suck. I can probably count on 1 hand the number of politicians that I don't think suck. Actually you can delete the "probably" You are very LIBERAL with your politician hating.

Exactly, because 40% are D's, 40% are R's, and the rest of us are actually free thinking.

I think we need to win at least 4, but looking at the schedule, I don't know how that's possible. We know all too well that the I-AA game isn't even guaranteed anymore. If only the MAC in football were analogous to the MAC West in basketball... I'm scared for this fall. With no NFL, the eyes on college football will be that much more acute and we have the potential to be that much more embarrassed. I'm not a current supporter either, but I would love for iCoach to prove me wrong. Go Zips! Great to hear JD has no bitterness towards UA. I always did like his personality.

Halftime conversation in the ND Locker room
UAZipster0305 replied to akronzips71's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Woulda, shoulda, coulda...shoulda beat ND and it looks like we coulda handled FSU. The Sweet 16 was possible this year. We're getting closer. -
Or, seed 1 vs 16, 2 vs 15, 3 vs 13 and 4 vs 12. From what I see, there isn't much difference between the teams that get seeded anywhere between 5 and 11. Go back to 64 teams. The selection committee should at that point take the next 40 teams they feel deserve to be in the tournament and pick the names with a lottery. Seven teams won't make it, but that could be part of the suspense. The Tournament Lotter Show would be much better than what they have on now. More suspense would be better and the selection of the teams would be in a more fair manner than what takes place now. I love this. And if doing a lottery, there would be true incentive for teams to win their conference...particularly for the BCS programs where there are a lot of at-large bids.
-
Use the conference tournaments to do this or eliminate the conference tournaments. Do one or the other, but don't do both. I like the idea of making the conference tournaments mean something for more than just the mid-major conference schools. What if the Duke vs. UNC game last Sunday actually was meaningful? So make the tournament 96 teams. The 31 conference champions get a bye along with the top at-large team. This makes the big conference tournaments very meaningful. It also introduces a play-in round made up of the at-large teams that would eliminate the "bubble" teams before the real tournament began. So teams that didn't belong this year like UAB would get knocked out and teams that were supposedly snubbed have a chance to prove they belong. You end up with a field of 64 that's stronger than what you have today. Regardless of how many teams there are in the Tournament, there will always be bubble teams. The only way to eliminate the bubble team concept is to include conference tournament champions only thereby eliminating the selection process.

How to Get to Where Butler is Now?
UAZipster0305 replied to UAZip0510's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
If the RPI doesn't count them, they don't hurt our resume at all. What does quantifiably hurt us are the 300+ RPI teams we play, the only problem is that most of the worst teams that hurt our SOS are in the MAC West and we don't have a choice. Also, remember that we originally were to open at Michigan State, but they backed out late and left us scrambling and the only team who was willing to fill the spot was Milliken. Replace Milliken with MSU and our schedule looks pretty decent with games against the Spartans, Temple, Dayton, Miami, CSU, and Minnesota all on the road. I also think what hurt us was not picking up a single marquee win against the good teams that we actually did play. Maybe we should worry about beating at least one of them before we try and load up on even stronger teams. I was unaware of that situation. If that is the circumstance, it is excusable. However, I don't want to see any games like it in the future. It's embarrassing. Even without marquee wins, this season would have been epic minus the losses to EMU and NIU. I think we had great opportunities to beat Miami and Buffalo the first times around too. -
How to Get to Where Butler is Now?

I would argue that we don't have a DI football program now either. Besides, I think KD can get us close to where Gonzaga and Butler are without the extravagant expenditures. -

Bingo! YSU is the only nobody team we should schedule on a regular basis if for nothing else than to have a conveniently close away game and because there are abundant YSU alumni in the area who may not otherwise attend a Zips game. I want to see Dayton, Xavier, VCU, and Cleveland State (so long as Waters is coach) annually. Sprinkle in Southern Illinois, Creighton, Butler, a few C-USA teams, and low-level Big 10 and Big East teams, and I'm happy. No more Millikens! D-I only unless for scrimmages or preseason! Regardless of whether we win big or not, nothing says we are a small-time program like playing D-II and D-III programs and counting them towards our W-L/20-win count. The RPI doesn't count them, so I don't. -
I heard Lebron gave UA a ton of cash and the Nike Center will be finished before the first game in the fall. It will be located across the street from Canal Park. The first game will be an exhibition between the Zips and Lebron versus the Cavs in the ultimate Akron vs. Cleveland game. College rules and officials will be used. Opening line O/U at 160 with the Zips and Lebron favored by 15. UA and Akron to host first round NCAA Tournament games in 2016 and 2018 along with the woman's Tournament in 2017.

Buffalo squeaks by Western Michigan 49-48 to advance to the quarter finals. Of note, the attendance at WMU was 1235. Hmmmmm, they love big time basketball in Kalamazoo. Less of a reflection on the Kalamazoo fans, more a reflection on exactly how much of a joke these CBI and CIT tournaments really are. I don't blame them for not getting excited about playing a conference opponent in a post-season tournament. I wouldn't be that interested. It would feel like just another game even though the post-season is supposed to be anything but that.

Halftime conversation in the ND Locker room
UAZipster0305 replied to akronzips71's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Please! We didn't run them over, we were competitive. -
The upset was there for the taking. We played good D, didn't commit many turn overs, stayed out of foul trouble, and didn't let ND's key players have big games. We just couldn't hit any shots. Good season overall. I just hope we are back and stronger than ever next year. I hope to see a schedule with all D-I opponents and no losses to teams like EMU and NIU.
-
We can't hit anything! If our below average shooting from the first half had continued, we'd be right there with ND. We look timid on offense.
-
What a block from behind by Zeke! We aren't even hitting FT's now!
-
We've made some stupid fouls without the dribbler attacking the basket. The last thing we want is ND shooting free throws early in the half. Come on, Zips! This one is there for the taking! ND looks like they are half asleep! We just need to start making some shots.
-
0-7 to start the half. Yikes!
-
Ice cold to start the half and still only down 7.
-
Just need to keep it close down the stretch. I don't think ND can stay hot the entire game.
