Despite getting only half as many free throw attempts (13 vs 26), Zips connected on 13 of 25 three-pointers, to just 6 of 21 for the Flyers. Great 3-0 start to the season. Next match is @UBuffalo, one of the preseason MAC favorites. They'll be looking for revenge for our victory at their place last season. https://www.espn.com/womens-college-basketball/boxscore?gameId=401266880

2020-2021 Akron Zips Basketball- Looking Forward
Z.I.P. replied to clarkwgriswold's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
For scheduling issues, follow this guy's Twitter. @RoccoMiller8 He's talking about MTE -- Multi-team events. High majors are host-scheduling 4 team events with regional, mainly mid-major opponents. -
Very Zip-centric article from the San Fran Chronicle here with stories from his Akron teammates. Apparently he was an early-day Rec Center Wonder of the hoops. "A second-team All-Mid-American Conference closer, he was drafted in the 16th round in 2011 by the White Sox and debuted three years later as the fourth Zips player to reach the majors. He also flashed his athleticism on the rec basketball court, where, Romick confirmed: “He can throw down.” " https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.sfchronicle.com/athletics/amp/A-s-Chris-Bassitt-fueled-by-energy-drinks-15620507.php

no akron zips soccer in the fall
Z.I.P. replied to TennZip's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Can anyone who's following it closely tell us which conferences are playing men's soccer this fall -- and which are waiting for Spring? I am presuming BTW, that all those whose men are playing this season also have women playing now. Correct? Also, could this be a preview of the yet-to-be-formalized two-season format? Is the NCAA planning a championship tournament anytime? -
The dirty little secret of CFB (one of them at least...): There is a FBS maximum of 85 scholarships per school. There is NO MINIMUM!

LePear Toles in uniform again. Really?? -
I think it's important to show that Ira Yedlin is no stranger to police violence. He knows of what he speaks -- and he's an elderly white Jewish chap. This tells the source of his fear for DeAndre. https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/phoenix/2017/08/27/protester-my-injuries-show-how-police-fell-short-trump-phoenix-rally/599476001/

They must be traveling clockwise (West-East) around the globe, because I got mine in Hawai'i a week ago! lol.

Future of College Men's Soccer
Z.I.P. replied to Zip_ME87's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Regarding the clock operation, I've spoken with officials at multiple stadia in the west. The NCAA Rules Committee determined the home team officials have option of counting up or down. Nearly all schools of course count down, rather than the international standard of up. In the Big West Conference where I travel, only UCSB counts up for both men and women). When speaking to press box scorers and administrators about this issue at the schools which count down I have told them the proper internationally accepted standard is to count up, and they seem to: 1). Not be aware of international standards. And 2). Not care about pleasing any but the casual fans who might be put off by a process that differs from how other sports practice their clock operation. Note that the one school which has the best relationship with NCAA Soccer is the one which practices the "proper" standard. I will continue to push for universities to follow the international football standards, regardless of the response from those lacking respect for the game's proper standards. Another argument I use is to tell them that the schools in the PAC 12 all count up on their scoreboards (I think...) You'd hope the mid-major leagues would want to copy the higher leagues, but it takes time. I use social media to communicate with coaches and administrators, and they seem to agree with establishing correct standards, but sometimes...they don't make the decision. Even Pac-12 TV announcers are split the same way. Some I tweet to agree with this standard while others simply don't care. That's life! ??? -

No reason why the team can't be involved in another pre-season/OOC tournament -- especially if it's a 4-team event. They seem to be increasing in number. -

Excellent! One nice aspect to a listener in the 50th State is hearing the pronunciation of all the names! lol. Does Clint get them all right? ? -

It's National Zipper Day everyone! A BIG shout out to Benjamin Franklin Goodrich. Hope he's tuned in! And to the legendary Margaret Hamlin whose name was picked as the official nickname of The University of Akron athletic teams. That was in I think 1927. Hello, Maggie!

Post-season bans almost never occur in college basketball -- can't think of any recent cases. Univ. of Hawai'i had a very similar case with an assistant coach forging financial docs for an overseas player. They were docked one scholarship recruit for two seasons -- a worse penalty than the Bulls received. The assistant is always the fall guy -- think John Loyer and Huggins. -
Akron's done well with underappreciated HS ballplayers. For example, here's the 1966 Little All-American men's basketball team. Dick Barnett Tennessee State Walt Frazier Southern Illinois Earl Monroe Winston Salem State Phil Jackson North Dakota Bill Turner Akron For those who don't know, four of these are in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Assistant Coach Matt Futch hired by OCU
Z.I.P. replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
"CVCA announced Futch as its new boys basketball coach Monday, taking over for Jay Peters, who stepped down last month after 17 years of leading the Royals." Jay Peters!! There's a blast from the past. He was like the original CJ McCollum. Went from an unknown junior to -- did he become Mr Basketball like CJ -- for the Battlin' Bees? -
Thanks. I had forgotten they had a team. ?♂️

Akron played Tampa again...the opening game following their victory over Kent State in the previous season's Tangerine Bowl -- was that bowl game at Tampa's stadium? I was just in JHS so I don't remember the year, but I do remember that the Zips defeated Tampa -- with future 49er Pro Bowl WR Freddy Solomon playing quarterback. I don't remember John Matuszak on the team, but he could have been. Thanks to ol' 72Roo for his reminiscence! Coach Gordon Larsen was a very close friend of my dad and uncles. Larsen, Ara Parsegian and my dad and Uncle Tom played together either at South High School and or with the semi-pro Akron Awnings team. There are a lot of stories we could share over mai tais some time... ???♂️

Thanks, Boss. I kept scrolling to the RIGHT, and couldn't get it to work! ? So Faust had to use the JAR track for practice while Huggs was holding his own team sessions. Good thing that didn't happen when Dan Hipsher was coach. Hell, he threw me outta the upper stands one time when I was just sittin' there. Hipsher got upset with the girl who served him burnt toast at Denny's in Waikiki and swore he'd never come back to Hawai'i again! ?

I know Dailey is listed as a F on Akron's roster, as there are so few non-guards, lol. However, he was strictly in the 2-guard spot in Iowa City, and his game seems suited for it. But this is the #MACtion, so he seems perfectly suited to whichever wing spot Groce slots him into! -
