the Bud Light Platinum is a joke and reminds me of Budweiser Ale. They're charging $6.99 for a 6 pack to go after the craft beer market. Is a craft beer drinker really going to sacrifice taste to save $2-3?

Luke Holmes seemed bummed about this on his twitter account. I feel bad for him because he has the skill to play in the MLS. I honestly think the only reason he wasn't picked up is because he'd take up an international spot. Those international spots can be traded, so they technically have a $$ value. Besides paying the 32,600 to Luke Holmes, they would lose the value of that international spot. Columbus' lack of Akron players is frustrating to me because I believe it would be good for soccer's growth in Ohio if the communities were connected. I've heard it mentioned before that Cleveland soccer fans don't like to come down to Akron for soccer. It seems like there's a rivalry between the communities of Ohio and it's not positive at all. The Crew's attendance was awful last year and it wont get better if they don't lean on other communities in Ohio for support.
-
It's not Columbus's fault Luke Holmes didn't get picked up. It is frustrating though that Columbus doesn't have any Akron players (besides the one that will be recognized from UNC). I try to watch all of Columbus' games on matchday live, but will switch if a team is playing with Akron players on it. I always root for the Akron players to do well which makes it hard to root for Columbus when they're up against a team with Akron players on it. Columbus doesn't feel like a home team, which I wish wasn't true.

Rules regarding international players: Domestic/International: In 2011, a total of 144 international slots are divided among the 18 clubs. Each club began with eight international slots, which are tradable. There is no limit on the number of international slots on each club’s roster. The remaining roster slots must belong to domestic players. For clubs based in the United States, a domestic player is either a U.S. citizen, a permanent resident (green card holder) or the holder of other special status (e.g., refugee or asylum status). The two MLS clubs based in Canada – Toronto FC and Vancouver Whitecaps FC – began with eight international slots, but their domestic slots may be filled with either Canadian or U.S. domestic players. MLS clubs based in Canada are required to have a minimum of three Canadian domestic players on their rosters. Players with the legal right to work in Canada are considered Canadian domestic players (i.e., Canadian citizen, permanent resident, part of a protected class). http://www.mlssoccer.com/2011-mls-roster-rules

Luke Holmes highlights http://www.mlssoccer.com/video/2012/01/12/...-holmes-akron-f not sure when NASL or USL pick up players, but hopefully he'll land somewhere. <object width="620" height="349" id="cfd83e6oi" name="cfd83e6on" classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000"><param name="movie" value="http://p.mlssoccer.com/SAu5a/video/839681/839681_2012-01-12-093421.640hq.mp4"><param'>http://p.mlssoccer.com/SAu5a/video/839681/839681_2012-01-12-093421.640hq.mp4"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed width="620" height="349" src="http://p.mlssoccer.com/SAu5a/video/839681/839681_2012-01-12-093421.640hq.mp4" id="cfd83e6ei" name="cfd83e6en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" /></object>

I'll try to show up after the Can't vs Akron bball game which ends at 9

I've read that there might be an issue with him taking up an international spot on the roster. There are rules regarding the amount of international players a MLS team is allowed to have.
-
I'm dissatisfied with the Columbus Crew organization right now. There are 14.5 (Ben Speas counts as 1/2) former Akron players in the MLS and the Columbus Crew only have Ben Speas who will be recognized as a UNC product. Luke Holmes is a better player than the following: 1 Kirk Urso (UNC) Position: MF 2 Jamie Finch (University of Washington) Position: D 3 Darren Amoo (Liberty University) Position: F 4 Andrew Bulls (Univ. Maryland Baltimore Co.) Position: F frustrated with Columbus because I want to like them, but considering their lack of Akron players, Montreal Impact will be my #1 team next year followed by DC United

the beautiful thing about tailgating in lot 9 for soccer games is that it's free. Especially when I spend around $50 in tailgating supplies per game. I'd like to tailgate for at least one football game next year, but not sure which lot yet.

One of the MLS writers has Luke Holmes going 26 to the Columbus Crew, imagine that!! http://www.mlssoccer.com/superdraft/2012/n...2012-mock-draft If Columbus wants to start selling tickets in Northeast Ohio, they need to start bringing in Akron players.
-
I will become a Crew fan if they take Luke Holmes at 26 or 29

it's a done deal, he signed http://www.thecrew.com/news/2012/01/crew-s...omegrown-player

NCAA trying to kill college soccer
bobbyake replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Not sure if I'm correct about this, but I remember hearing: - homegrown players do not count against a rosters salary and are protected when expansion drafts take place. So as long as a team signs their homegrown player, he remains off the rosters salary for the duration of his career with that team. - Generation Adidas players do not count against a roster and are protected until that player graduates. We've seen some players graduate after a year. Generation Adidas players normally start at $100k+ Homegrown players start around $50k -

NCAA trying to kill college soccer
bobbyake replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
From an austerity standpoint, sure. But it's probably better for their development as a player, and for US soccer long term, that academies keep the better prospects, and that the academy system develops to the point where more prospects are able to forgo college entirely The best academy prospects usually play at the college level. For a player starting in the pros, a generation adidas contract (100k+ a year), is so much better than a homegrown contract (40-60k a year). I do not see any benefit for an academy prospect to forgo college, and don't expect that to change in the near future. The best option for any player's development is to do both, which the players can currently do. Plus, they can play in the PDL during the summer. I believe the best thing for US soccer right now is for college soccer to continue to improve. These players need a backup plan in case their pro careers are cut short. The average MLS player makes around $40-100k for 10-13 years and retires around the age of 35. They need something to fall back on after their pro careers are over. College soccer in the US is growing. Attendance figures are up and a lot more schools averaged more than 1,000 per game this year than in previous years. There were also more games this year with 5k+ attendances than any other year (The Zips added 2 to that list ). If it wasn't for college soccer, I would have never developed a major interest in soccer. I believe the story is the same for many more in the US. College soccer helps grow the popularity of the sport in the US, which is the most important thing right now for US soccer. -
I'm all for the government designing a place(island) where druggies can go live. Let them do their drugs and make them free. Call it Zombie Island. I'd be more than happy to pay for that tax because it would do wonders decreasing crime in cities. What other answers are there? What do you get if you legalize marijuana? The Pros: Tax revenue. The Cons: Drug dealers start pushing stronger drugs to make up for the loss of income from marijuana. Don't think for a second that these drug dealers are simply going to go away if you legalize marijuana.

George Thomas of ABJ on 92.3 interview
bobbyake replied to scottditzen's topic in Akron Zips Football
Most sports fans probably don't even know that Wayne State even exists. So, he's a step above that. come on now, with the internet, it takes less than a minute to research something. I research stocks for a living and if you gave me a company to trade, I'd be in the 10Q's & K's and all over searching for news. It should be no different for a sports writer. It's a disgrace to have George Thomas as the Zips beat writer. I will never in my life subscribe to the Beacon Journal under its current management!! How hard is it to search in google, Wayne State Athletics? -
someone posted the Zipmail somewhere on here where Tom Wistrcill explained the car/fire situation. Apparently Ianello already knew he was being fired before the drive. Considering how long it took to hire a new coach, you could argue that the university could have delayed the firing. But if you were around the boards before the firing, we were all raging for blood. The Fire Ianello facebook group grew to around 400 people and for basketball's sake, I don't think the decision could be delayed any longer.

Too much to repost and then write back. Crime goes beyond police presense or technology deterents. The justice system can only do so much. They have limited space and limited tax dollars to keep people in jail for a long period of time. The only thing that limits crime is opportunity. If you don't have jobs that pay well in a country crime rates will be higher. Just plain fact. We are in an economic recession, people are desperate so crime goes up. Additionally crime is due to opportunity. With more vacant property there are more places to hide. The reality of crime is that despite economically difficult times we are at lower crime rates then we have been in the past. It has heated up lately because while the unemployment percentage is dropping, unemployment as a whole isn't. The rate is calculated by those collecting benefits as those are the ones reporting it. Unemployment is high, many people are running out of unemployment benefits and something has to be done to support themselves. Bottom line, you get rid of crime by increasing jobs. I am not buying the economic argument. I believe a lot of it has to do with drugs and people being unqualified to work at a lot of jobs because of their abuse. If the police department drug tested everyone they catch doing robberies/burglaries, I'm willing to bet at least 95% of them would test positive for drugs in their system. Meth is taking over the drug world right now and it's extremely addictive. Once a high school student starts, it's hard to get them to kick it. These meth heads will let the drug tear their world down so that they can't hold jobs. I have family that work in both St. Thomas and City Hospital, meth abuse is very popular in this community. The economy is recovering right now, I've seen a lot of companies start hiring. Unemployment is falling, Ohio's dropped to 8.5. Current holiday sales have been very strong. New-home sales jumped big in November. It's hard to be bearish on the market right now. I'm a moderate so I'm extremely irritated by the games the Republicans and Democrats are playing with each other right now. I hate politics. If you strip politics out for 2012, 2013, the UPRO could do wonders.
