  1. Sporting KC is a perfect example of how one team can be at the bottom and rise to the top. I enjoyed the MLS a lot in 2011.
  2. How about that spanking Arsenal took today?
  3. You don't have to. I try to talk to as many of our players as I can each season, and Ben was always very friendly to me. He's no longer a Zip, but was for 2 years and had one great header save vs UNC in the 2009 semi-final game to help the Zips get to the final. I don't hold it against him. It does suck to say, "it sucks we lost him," after every NC game I read about. He's had a great year at NC. He could be the difference between us sitting at home this weekend vs going to Alabama
  4. I'm with you on both points. If/when the Crew someday picks up Chad Barson or any of the other Zips in their academy (yes, including Ben Speas, even though he went to UNC), I will follow the Crew. I don't share the same feelings as you regarding Ben Speas. He doesn't feel like a Zip to me.
  5. As for the EPL, I don't like how dominant the top teams are over the bottom. There's little surprise with the matches. The Newcastle vs Chelsea game was fun to watch though. I don't mind watching the EPL's middle teams go at it with each other. As for Columbus. I try to root for the Crew but find it very hard at times because they're a boring team to watch and don't have a single Zip playing for them.
  6. I honestly don't care for the EPL. My favorite MLS team to watch is Portland when they're at home. I love the atmosphere the Timber's Army adds to the game. I also like watching Seattle's home games as well. Favorite European club is AS Bari (where my grandparents are from). I try to watch as many Barcelona and Real Madrid games that I can because it's unbelievable how those teams perform.

  8. we could start a season ticket pledge, count me in for 5. Season tickets are priced at $56 per person.
  9. we could possibly do something at Barley House, anyone up for it?
  10. UConn goal 1-0, 8 minutes left
  11. Scoreless at FT. "A good match deserves a goal." Colin Rolfe with a brutal tackle. Easily could have earned a straight red but got a yellow. I need Creighton and UConn to lose tomorrow and then my bracket looks a little better. I still think there's no way I win.
  12. Rubber City Brigade is the perfect compromise, can we end voting tomorrow at 10pm? Hoping one of us hears back from the Akron Metro FC's status with the Akron Summit Assault. Our efforts will focus on public awareness and saving them. No reason a PDL team can't survive in this city.
  13. Bob Dyer's story: Inside scoop Online journalism. Gotta love it. Cyberspace was tingling Tuesday afternoon when the Lake County Sentinel (no, I had never heard of it, either) reported that former Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel was in Akron and was all but a lock to become the next head coach of the Zips. The website, which bills itself as “Lake County Ohio’s online news source,” cited unnamed sources as confirming that Tressel attended a UA basketball game Saturday night [false] and would meet with school officials within days [false]. “It has also rumored [sic] that the board of donations at the University of Akron are [sic] pushing hard for Tressel to coach the Zips football team, who [sic] went 2-22 under former coach Rob Ianello, who was fired after two years on Saturday.” The board of what? Now, I realize that big-money donors can play a significant role in these sorts of decisions, but I’m pretty sure the University of Akron does not have a “board of donations.” So I shot an email to the author, who is identified on the site as “Senior Writer” Justin Lada. Hi. Quick question on your Tressel story: What the hell is the U of A “board of donations”? His response, verbatim: “Don’t worry about, I don’t want to get ‘scooped.’ Thanks for you [sic] interest.” Huh? I tried again. If you have uncovered a “board of donations,” you already have a major scoop. His response: “Thank you for your interest in our website. If you need any additional information, feel free to contacting [sic] our owner and editor. ...” Well, I’ve got a scoop, too, Justin. And feel free to quote it. I hear the University of Akron Board of Wild Speculation, in conjunction with the UA Armchair Quarterbacking Board, is pressuring the university to bring in Gerry Faust as offensive coordinator, Jim Dennison as linebackers coach and Bob Huggins as sports information director. Sources say it will happen by the end of the week. Remember, you heard it here first. Bob Dyer can be reached at 330-996-3580 or bdyer@thebeaconjournal.com. http://www.ohio.com/news/local/bob-dyer-ma...-photo-1.248140 The irony. He's making a jab at online journalism, while online journalism is putting companies like the Beacon out of business.
  14. let's hope there's a way to save the team http://theshinguardian.com/2011/11/01/psa-...er-was-growing/
  15. We need to do something similar to this to save the Akron Summit Assault team. http://theshinguardian.com/2011/11/01/psa-...er-was-growing/
  16. sounds like he's got some options. Personally, I'd love to see him in the MLS. Not sure what the other clubs will offer but if he signs Generation Adidas contract, he'll make around $120-150k per year in the MLS.
  17. I like what I am seeing, but watching this game reveals how big of a jump it is from a D2 school to a D1A. This looks like a glorified D1 high school game. We should be happy the Zips didn't play either team this year. Sadly, I think you're right. Come on...don't be crazy. ha, you really never know. We were getting blown out by the worst teams in FBS at the end of the year. I think that was more of the players showing the university administrators that they had given up and wanted a change. Those teams aren't THAT much more talented. well then it's definitely good we didn't play them at the end of the year. Imagine the message that would have sent.

  20. the field is completely covered with snow. Would have been fun to watch them play on that.
  21. How much would be fair? I wouldn't worry. Porter's latest contract pays a base of 270K with an 80K services clause for promoting the University for a total of 350K annually plus incentive incentive compensation. There are also many perks included such as a car allowance, club membership allowance and an interest bearing annuity bonus should he serve the whole term of his contract. This doesn't include the substantial sum Caleb earns from camps. Long story short, it will take unprecedented deep pockets to lure Caleb away for another college job. He's probably the highest paid coach in the college soccer now!!! i wonder how much the University brings in from those camps. Every time I hear about them, they're completely sold out
  22. don't be shy about voting here: http://www.facebook.com/groups/194378190573670/ Facebook polls allow people to change votes, and allows me to add/remove options as we go. This makes it easier.
