  1. a lot of slumlords own properties in that area because those houses sell between 15-40k. They'll split a house up by room and rent each room for less than $200. It's extremely cheap to live in that area so you get a lot of rift raft wanting to move in there. I get disturbed whenever I see a family with kids living in one of those properties. I understand they're cheap, but they're cheap for a reason. No parent should raise their children in the middle of college students that party all the time, no matter how cheap it is. I noticed that the city has cameras at a lot of stop lights now. I have no idea if the police use those or not, but I think they'd be perfect for helping solve crime cases. Take North Hill for example, there's only a few ways to get in and out of North Hill. You would be able to use those cameras to determine whether a criminal is still in the area. A lot of people inaccurately blame the crime on the city for not having enough police. More police isn't the answer. I believe more hidden street cameras are a lot cheaper and more beneficial for solving crimes than more police. Technology is cheaper and more reliable than more manpower. There will always be a need for good police work, but utilizing the technology we have today could go a long way in helping catch the bad guys. We also need to start holding judges and the justice system accountable for when they release prisoners early. If a prisoner is released early and commits another crime with victims involved. The victim, or the family (if the victim is deceased) should be able to sue the justice system for making a poor decision allowing that criminal to go free early.
  2. the fact that George Thomas still has a job is exactly why I hate unions. Michael Beaven should be full-time and the Zips beat writer.
  3. I think that is a very high possibility. From everything I have read, Andrew Wenger is the best player in the draft, with the ability to play many positions. Darren however, is the best striker in the draft, and as of now, Montreal's best attacking option is a guy who would rather be in Houston and has made that clear. (I am still waiting to hear how that unfolds). I think Montreal takes Darren because they need him. I also think he gets good minutes there. If he falls second and gets taken by Vancouver, he doesn't play as much because they are deeper up top. That is the way I see it. Montreal will trade Brian Ching for Kofi Sarkodie and draft Darren Mattocks which will leave them with 5 former Zips on the roster
  4. If Charlotte could steal Shaun Docking from Coastal Carolina, losing Jeremy Gunn would be a blessing in disguise.
  5. After Terry Bowden as the new Zips coach is made official, we should redo this vote. I will change mine to no.
  6. I know this board is anonymous (who cares who "Blue & Gold" is? No one.), but I definitely owe TW an appology for some of the things I've posted on ZNO over the last few days. This is an excellent hire and I'm excited about Zips football again. I really had lost faith. This feels GREAT! I'm not anonymous at all on here, and called for Tom Wistrcill's head a few days ago. Opps!!
  7. the guy has been super lazy with his writing (Wayne State Lions?). His movie reviews were awful. This was a perfect time for his vacation to dodge some work because he figured he'd be busy around this time.
  8. Major problem with the Beacon is George Thomas covers the Zips. Might be time to start a facebook page calling for the Beacon to fire George Thomas and replace his full-time position with Michael Beaven.
  9. You mean to tell me we're getting a guy like this at a price like that? Looks like Christmas has come a couple days early for the Zips! Now if you excuse me, I have some wood to knock on. 370k could be the base salary with incentives. Similar to how Caleb Porter's base Salary is 270k and he gets bonuses which add up to around 380k a year.
  10. Ohio.com is reporting this as well http://www.ohio.com/news/break-news/report...e-zips-1.251701
  11. Much needed good news for Akron Football, Akron will be saving 750,000 and will only pay Ianello $250,000. http://www.ohio.com/sports/on-the-record-i...eement-1.251662 Former University of Akron football coach Rob Ianello will receive $250,000 to forgo three years of guaranteed employment, the university announced in a statement Wednesday. The deal means UA will save more than $750,000 in salary and benefits. UA President Luis Proenza will recommend approval to the board of trustees at its next meeting, scheduled for Jan. 18. UA still has not hired a replacement for Ianello, who was relieved of his duties Nov. 26 after going 2-22 in two seasons.
  12. Here's a reminder of what we went through http://zipsnation.org/forums//index.php?showtopic=2123
  13. NCAA moves forward to eliminate all Division 1 international tours The good news is: The Work Group decided not to forward the recommendation to eliminate non-championship competition for soccer and other sports or cut competition 10% across all sports after encountering substantial opposition from the targeted sports involved. The elimination of spring competition would have further handicapped college soccer as a route to the pros. I know there are some that want academies to replace college soccer in the US, I think those people are dead wrong. Some MLS players are making less than 40k a year!! Most of these players could make more using their college education instead of playing in the MLS. Unless a player can sign a generation adidas (100k salary), finishing college is the best option. Things in America work different than Europe. People need to accept that. Also, international trips were only allowed once every 4 years. So technically, the Zips soccer team wouldn't be able to go on another international trip until 2015.
  14. This reminds of when Ken Lolla left Akron for Louisville. I hope that Charlotte can recover like we did and hire a better coach. The Cinderella story only ends happily for Jeremy Gunn and Stanford. Just a couple weeks removed from leading Charlotte to the national championship game, Gunn has resigned from the program to accept the job as the Stanford men's head coach. Gunn at the College Cup. The 49ers had provided soccer fans with the warm and fuzzies by making their somewhat surprising run through the NCAA Tournament, before losing to North Carolina, but now they can add their name to the intriguing list of programs with coaching vacancies. Gunn leaves after five seasons at Charlotte and a record of 64-26-14. He undoubtedly helped raise the profile of the program and the 49ers didn't let him walk without a fight. "The Chancellor and I made a competitive, substantial offer to Jeremy to try to keep him as our coach," Charlotte Director of Athletics Judy Rose told Charlotte's athletic website. "We are disappointed in Jeremy's decision but understand the appeal of Stanford and wish him well." The appeal of Stanford is, well ... Stanford. The Cardinal is in a bit of a lull, having missed the NCAA Tournament the last two seasons with losing records, but Gunn may be just the man to restore the spark. Gunn brings a West Coast flavor to the table, having graduated and initially coached at Cal-State Bakersfield. He succeeds former Stanford coach Bret Simon who resigned in November after 11 years at the helm. http://www.topdrawersoccer.com/college-soc...ach-Jeremy-Gunn
  15. topdrawersoccer seems to believe Mattocks will go first to Montreal http://www.topdrawersoccer.com/college-soc...-MLS-Mock-Draft

  17. although you can't change your vote on here, if you said no, would you change it now after finding out another coach declined the head coaching position?
  18. Not sure what this makes it, but cops are all over the place right now on North Street. Around 15-20 police cars and 4-5 fire department vehicles sitting in the Bottom projects.
  19. Be nice. George Thomas is busy eating. I wonder how many people would join if I made a George Thomas Sucks as a Zips Beat Writer page on facebook.
  20. Amazed that this is being brought up again. I like it. We could all use some hope
  21. "Under a show-cause order, any school that hired Tressel would have to present its case for why it needed to employ him, and would risk severe penalties if he were to commit any further infractions after that." So anyone that hires him takes a huge risk. In our situation, it's well worth the gamble. Too bad he's not in play anymore. If any school has just cause to hire JT, I think that is us. We have nothing left to lose. Since this punishment probably lowered JT in value, now we need to go back and try and get him. considering how down everyone is right now about Akron Football, it would not hurt for the rumors to start again.

  23. arguing with you is a waste of my time. No matter what you and your Can't State(HippieU)/Occupy Wall Street friends believe, things aren't going to change. Like I said before, things are better now than ever for anyone that applies their-self. Imagine if you lived during the Roman days and questioned your boss's pay
  24. CBS has the highest rated shows on cable. http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/ CBS is outperforming the market by 37% over the last year http://www.google.com/finance?chdnp=1&...t=big&hl=en CBS shareholders don't have a problem with his compensation. It's not corporations that are bankrupting America, it's Washington and the stupid political games they play with each other.
