This is just a bad basketball team. We are undisciplined and extremely unathletic. I could shoot free throws better than this team with my off hand.

We could say the same thing about the football team season after season, yet we are thrilled to death at the start of every new season even though they usually end in disappointment. Why are we excited every year? Because we never know what is going to happen. I will stay optomistic with Howard for the time being.

A Safety Joins the Recruiting Class
Zipgrad01 replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
Yeah....he had 1 offer from a 1-AA school. I watched the highlights there and on rivals. He doesnt seem fast enough to be a safety. -
Zips Nab a RB and a DB
Zipgrad01 replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
Take those videos with a grain of salt. Best video I have ever watched of a recruit coming to Akron was this guy.How does someone get rated 999 out of 307? That means he is rated behind 692 people who don't exist. I don't see the NFL in his future. If you look closely, it says there are over 2,000 players. -
I look at it this way.....Ianello was late into the game this year and most of the really good recruits are already taken. He is going to fill his class out regardless of whether Erick Howard comes to UA. Would you rather fill out our classes with borderline D1 level players or would you rather take a chance on a BCS kid or two? In my opinion, I go for the homerun. Chances are the borderline D1 level kid never steps on the field anyway, so what do you really have to lose?
-
Because this program is not very good right now. We need to take at least one or 2 chances a year on a kid that we normally have no chance of getting. This kid is at a BCS school if his grade were good.
-
Just curious - In the last 5 years, how many prep school kids has Ohio State accepted? I'll guess zero, but I don't follow OSU closely.I may be incorrect, but I think they have 2 this year.

Recruiting updates from me will be sparse. There's a whole new group of coaches...and I have no way to meet them until signing day. Or maybe the summer golf outing.Sucks. This used to be my favorite time of year.A 3 star running back that is committed to NIU visited Akron this weekend and could very well switch his commitment to the Zips. His last name is Bowers.Scout LinkI read Bowers comments about the trip on Rivals and he seems to be on the fence about switching his commitment to the Zips. He said the facilities blew him away and he loved the BCS coaching experience from the staff. Lets hope this is all enough to get him here.

Anyone get an update on this past weekends visitors?

Cant wait for recruiting update

whats the status of Seth Cunningham(St Ed DB)?As of last month he was going to honor his commitment and stay with us. I think he is in. -
Too bad 95% of the people (me included) dont give a crap about soccer.
-
Devoe needs to be moved to linebacker. He is not a legit D1 running back in my opinion, but would be an all conference linebacker immediately. One of the best high school linebackers I have watched and that is what Ohio State was recruiting him to be.

Akron RB Levon Morefield a finalist for the Rudy Awards

Me too .. perhaps you can still use the "endzone grass hill gnome" sometime though.Ok Rowdies out there, that is what I want to see next year, a group of blue and gold pointy hat wearing "endzone lawn gnomes".That would be worth the price of admission -
Is this going to be an All-Italian coaching staff? Might give a hint as to what will be grillin' at the Lot #9 tailgate next season. We could only be so lucky. Throw a Greek person in there and you have me (Italian and Greek). Maybe we can hire Kokinis.

I missed the section with Buckeye fans hating on each other....where was that?Dantonio got the ball rolling in Cincy. Kelly came in at the perfect time because Dantonio had aleady built a solid foundation to grow from.

I'm not for, or opposed to hiring ND staff. For one, you go with what you know, EVERY coach does it. Coach Ianello knows what kind of coach he has in John Latina. He was a successful play caller at Ole Miss, so why couldn't he be at Akron? Plus he's from Western PA. Both Camp and Latina were assistant coaches on their previous staff. Just because you don't succeed at one place, doesn't mean you can't succeed at another. It's up to coach Ianello to find the right "mix" and put people at the right positions to be successful. I'm am most interested who is going to be our DC. I'm DYING to know. I don't have time right now, but somebody should research defensive guys that were associated with coach Ianello and put a list together. Here is the other point......Coach Weis was in charge at Notre Dame, not these guys. The people Ianello is bringing in have years of proven success at the HIGHEST level (SEC, PAC 10, Big 10, etc...). These guys arent automatically a bad hire because of the lack of success at Notre Dame under Charlie Weis. I mean...Urban Meyer was an assistant under Bob Davie at Notre Dame. Davie failed and Urban Meyer is one of the 3 hottest commodities in college football. Please, don't be reasonable and use facts.... I totally agree and would add that people need to stop with the "ND didn't do well" thing. If being from a school that didn't do well was an automatic DQ then Meyer, Saban, and Pinkel all wouldn't have jobs. I would be interested to see who ends up as DC though.Sorry, but I disagree. I agree that you can't look at individual coaching positions as part of how good the total team was, but you can look at how their responsibility is. ND had a bad o-line. Why would I want their o-line coach? They had a bad defense, why would I want their DC?I will use Ohio State as an example. I know I will be bashed, but it proves my point. I would take Fickell, Hazell, or Heacock as a defensive coach, becasue their defense is great. The team is a top 10 team going to another BCS game. However, I wouldn't take Bollman, as OL coach, because the o-line has sucked ever since he arrived. I want a coach that coached a good unit. I don't care about the rest of the team when looking at assistants.Sorry, but that is just plain wrong. Head coaches have the final say in the "system" that is run. The position coach or coordinator may not get to completely do things their own way. Example you ask.....Bruce Arians. He was the offensive coordinator for all of those joke Browns offenses. Guess what? He has the same job in Pittsburgh and his offense won super bowls.

So, you're saying the CF attitude is spouse-enhanced? I don't know about enhanced, but reinforced is a better word. Her opinions of the MAC are similar to mine. She went to Miami for her undergrad and UofA for MBA so she has seen the MAC from two different views. She has always worked and has held very good job so she looks at things from a pure business standpoint. I own my own business, but she is a better business person than I am. I'd never tell her, but she is much smarter. When I first started to have doubts about Frye, I didn't say a word to anyone. Shortly after that, my wife would make comments like, "If this guy is so good, how come he hasn't won many games in the MAC?" or "This league is terrible. He should have more wins against it." or "Any QB that is worth anything in the MAC wins a championship regardless of what is around him."If anyone remembers, my wife is the one who said after the UofA vs. Miami weeknight game a couple years ago that ended in a final score of something like 3-0, "Being commissioner of the MAC would be like being VP of Marketing for Dollar General. You could convince someone to come to your store once, but once they saw the crap you were selling they wouldn't come back." It's the perfect analogy for how hard the MAC is to sell and why people don't go to MAC games. It doesn't take a football expert to see the MAC is selling crap. I wish I was smart enough to come up with the Dollar General comment.I wish you were smart too.And it sure is hard for Dollar General to keep customers. We'll see where people shop once the economy turns around Einstein. Junk stores always do well when the economy isn't. People hold their noses when they walk through the doors of Dollar General like the do when they walk through the doors of a MAC stadium. You wish your posts were as interesting and as smart as mine. Stay in the back of the bus where you belong. Better yet, cry to the moderators for another sign....sign bitch. Now go back to high school debate club.Did I strike a nerve?Poor, poor GP1.Not at all. See g-spot17, I own you. You have become obsessed with what I post on this board and you try to insult someone who can't be insulted. I can manipulate you to do just about anything I want. Many have tested me before and I'm sure more will in the future. You're in good company because many more than just you have cried to the moderators about my posts. I'm the best poster on this board because I actually have interesting and original thoughts about the Zips, the MAC, sports and society in general. You on the other hand, you probably only have sex in one position because you are so uncreative.... if you can even get it up.GP1, on the other hand, has been having sex in two positions ever since learning how to use the other hand. We need to add a new emoticon of the guy eating the popcorn.

Based on what? Source?I would say based on his career thus far....however, nobody ever thought we would get a HC with zero HC'ing experince. I just can't imagine a 1st time head coach would hire a first time coordinator.
-
Notre Dame affiliation....checkArizona affiliation....checkSo we need what, Wisconsin and Alabama representatives now right?(actually I'm not sure what capacity Camp will have yet, DC or just a defensive position coach, but I like the hire)I am going to guess linebackers or DE coach.

Latina joined the Irish in '05 after spending six seasons at the University of Mississippi as offensive line coach and coordinated the Rebels' highly successful offense for five years. He directed the most prolific attack in Ole Miss history in 2003, as the Rebels set school records for points scored (442) and total offense (5,631) on the way to a final ranking of 13th in the Associated Press poll. Ole Miss led the Southeastern Conference that season in passing offense (286.0), scoring (34.0) and total offense (433.2). Quarterback Eli Manning was the SEC Offensive Player of the Year and was the number-one overall pick in the NFL draft. He did this in the SEC.....I will take him at Akron. This is turning out to be the best coaching staff this university has ever assembled.....BY FAR!!

No he doesn't.You play one, 1-AA school per season. That's it.If TW schedules two 1-AA schools he can have my season tickets. If I want to watch multiple 1-AA games, I'll go to a 1-AA stadium like Youngstown.Beyond that, only one 1-AA win counts towards bowl eligibility.Next season we play BCS Syracuse, Indiana and Cincinnati(?).So we should back out of our contracted game with Indiana? A bottom-rung Big 10 team? No way.Back out of our home game with Syracuse? Great idea....Stiff Cincinnati after they honored their game in Akron? That would be a classy move..."You want it to be one way....but it's the other."Enjoy the losing. Take a recliner to the game, there will be plenty of room. This team needs to get some wins under its belt and then we can beef up the schedule. One 1-AA game + a MAC East schedule is soft enough. Any softer and we should drop to 1-AA. If we do that, then your plan makes sense.I dont even like the 1 game against a 1-AA. I have a hard enough time getting people to go to the MAC games with me, let alone those games. If we can't compete in our conference and be willing to at least play some decent non conference teams, then we should drop down. You dont get recruits to come here by playing and beating a bunch on 1-AA teams.
