Former 2009 Recruit Back on the Radar?
Kangaroo Craig replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
You can't teach speed nor can you ever have enough of it. Do you know if he was offered a scholarship or will he be a preferred walk-on? -
Great to see CSU make a run. I think they can beat Arizona too. I loved seeing the Suckeyes go down. I can't stand those front running fans of theirs who think that "Being from Ohio" is a reason to root for them. The last time I checked, OSU wasn't the only major school from Ohio. Not even the Only BCS school (Cincinnati), as if that matters either. Go mid-majors (Hate that term too)! Down with the so called power conferences, especially the overrated Big 10, er 11. I think in the end it will be Louisville. They are the best team from the best conference. Pittsburgh has the horses to make a run, but they always seem to choke come tournament time.

I want us to be the ones to knock out the the Suckeyes at some point. -
Sucks that they still have the Rubber Bowl listed as our home field.

Gaffney Writes a Recruiting Column?
Kangaroo Craig replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
I'm getting real tired of the Hack who calls himself mark. Every time I read an artical about infoCision, this guy has to add some negative comment about how his son's tuition is going to be effected and how he hopes the Zips never win a game. What a moron! He makes me want to get on a plane and come back to Akron so I can tell him to his face how I feel about him. -
How many of you are/were Engineering majors?
Kangaroo Craig replied to ksu sucks's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
I'm a sparky from the 80's; however, my business experience is mostly on the mechanical side. I started in field service then moved to sales. I have been selling boiler equipment for the last 20 years. I used to work for B&W in Barberton. I am now a salesman for Alstom who is B&W's primary competitor. I live in Albuquerque and my territory is NM, AZ, NV, and UT. Are any of you guys current or ex B&W? If you worked for them between 1988 and 1995, I might know you. -
I think Jacquemain will continue to mature and will improve his game even more by next season. What worries me the most about this team is that they go through lapses on defense where they just can't stop anybody or anything. In order to improve they will need to be able to stop the run and put pressure on the quarterback consistently. You can't win by allowing your opponents to consistently answer your score with a score of their own. Those are momentum changers that just can't be allowed to happen at the rate that they currently are. I don't know if it is a lack of talent, depth, or both, but something needs to be done about it.

But for being so magnanimous in losing in 4 overtimes, our turn comes next year (Drew Willy will be gone plus we'll get to play Miami ).Go ZipsTurner Gill may also be gone which would be even more devastating to their program. He's a great coach. He'll get a big time job very soon.

My favorite Herb gaffe ever was when he called a hit "A Long fly to shallow center." Nobody listening with me knew which one he meant until he said that Vizquel was camped under it The Indians have lost an important member of the family...RIP Herb.I loved his call of the 97' World Series when Mesa got the second out in the bottom of the 9th in game seven against Florida and he thought it was the third and final out . He got all excited because he thought the Tribe had won the series. Tom Hamilton corrected him and of course, we all know what happened after that. Another Cleveland sports disappointment.Maybe he can talk to the big guy upstairs and ask for a Tribe World Series Title in the near future.I loved that guy!He will be missed by many.

Did anyone catch the comment he made about the two elderly people who were at the Thanksgiving Snow Bowl against Can't a few years back who arrived two hours before kickoff when no one was in the stadium and it was butt cold. He said that he was standing in front of the press box and that these two came up to him and told him that he was in their seats. Then he went on to say that this was his most memorable moment from the Rubber Bowl and that he was going to take those two seats with him when we retire the bowl. Better bring your hacksaw next week Donnan. Anyone else planning to "cut out their seats" next week?

I agree. The Republicans are down, but not out. In two years they will be primed to gain back seats in the house and senate (The out of power party always does). The last time the Dems controlled both houses of congress and the white house was under the Carter administration. Those of you who are old enough to remember will recall that the result of all of that socialism was 10% inflation, 10% unemployment, 20% interest rates, and the hostage crisis in Iran due to a weakened US global military prescence. I pray that none of that mess occurs again. As far as Miami, I hope they keep Montgomery for at least a few more years because he is destroying that once proud program. I love Hixson, but here's hoping he does not have a big game against the Brownies like he did during the preseason. Here's my "homer" prediction: Browns 17, Giants 15. If a home crowd, in front of a national audiance on Monday night can't get these guys fired up, nothing will. Plus, the giants road win streak has to end at some point. Why not tonight? It's been a week of upsets so far in the NFL. The Brownies will continue that trend.

Hi Z.I.P.It was great to meet you here in Albuquerque a few weeks back. Too bad the soccer team lost a close one to UNM. Hopefully the bearcats FB team will also lose on Saturday. I'll look you up the next time I get to paradise! Give me a call me the next time you are out here in the high desert.Take care.GO Zips!

I watched most of the Miami game. I probably should have been pulling for the MAC team, but I could not root for the sweaters. This was, however, a perfect opponent to schedule for Miami (I wish we could do the same - same with UTEP in Buffalo - didn't our AD come from UTEP), it's just that Vandy is on a bit of an upswing with very good team speed. We used to have the same luck with our scheduling... anyone remember Kansas State. We booked them (away only of course) when they were terrible and then Snyder took over and moved them into the top ten. We were figuratively wiped out by K-State twice during Snyder's tenure.I saw that game as well. Miami looks like they have a better than average defense (Like last year), but their offense is just not very good. Granted, they played an SEC team, but a middle of the pack to bottom feeder SEC team nonetheless. I agree with an earlier post that says keep Radabaugh in there. The sweaters will not compete for a MAC title as long as that guy is under center. Vandy might be better than advertised, but I think it is more likely that MU is not as good as advertised. That crowd was pathetic too! Damn near empty by half way through the third quarter.

UA Recruits Win at Home Depot Center
Kangaroo Craig replied to Z.I.P.'s topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Odds are I won't be able to make it unless the College Cup is played on the West Coast -- an unlikely scenario. Find me in the stands at UNM Soccer stadium in Albuquerque 9/12/08.I've noticed how many universities have "double-service" track & field and soccer fields. The place they play in Cowlumbus; Drake Field at UCLA; New Mexico's place are all track stadiums first. So the idea that Akron is at a disadvantage because they don't have a major soccer-only facility may not be that big a thing. It doesn't appear to be hampering Caleb's ability to recruit future pro players.BTW -- did anyone see the 16 year old Ethiopian, Ibrahim score for Toronto FC vs the Chicago Fire yesterday? Bob Bradley better get that kid's immigration documents to his doorstep, like now, man! Hurry before the Canadians get there first.I recently moved to the Albuquerque area. I plan to be at the UNM soccer tournament as well. Anyone who is coming to this area should send me an email and I'll give you my phone number so you can call me when you get here. I would love to get together with you guys to talk Zips and throw back a few cold ones. Be careful with drinking and driving here though. I have been told that the local police here have zero tolerance for DWI. I have even seen police road blocks designed to randomly check for drunk drivers on Friday and Saturday nights. -
I'll say 20,000. That would be about 5K more per game than what the average has been the last few years. The quality of the product on the field will be slightly better than it is right now, and more fans will pack the stands because of the stadium being on campus. Plus, UA is building new dorms within walking distance to Infocision Stadium. It will be very convenient for students to attend games. If this doesn't help, then nothing will.

Its also outdated (2006). Geauga Lake is closed and no mention of the new stadium. Still worth watching though.Thanks.

Although it probably won't happen (Unless they trade one of their two QBs - which they will not do unless Miami gives them a high draft pick as well), I would love to see him wearing brown & orange next year.

5,000 capacity. Interesting that they're choosing to remain one of the smallest in the MAC.That was the first thing that I noticed. The place looks like a glorified high school gym.Why spend the $$ if you are not going to do it right. This place should be twice the size of what is being proposed. Doesn't their current building (Anderson Arena?) seat at least that many?

Proenza Supports College Football Playoff
Kangaroo Craig replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
This is a good format. 24 teams means that at least one gets in from the MAC. However, I wouldn't count on this ever flying. I would love to believe that their (NCAA's) reasoning for limiting the playoff to eight teams is because they feel the season is too long, but I'm not buying that excuse. The real reason is so they can assure themselves of locking out schools from smaller conferences such as the MAC, WAC, MWC, and Sunbelt. Somehow they will figure out a way to continue the status quo that keeps all of the money and power in the hands of the BCS schools. Although a playoff system under their 8 or "plus one" format will be better than what we have now, it will still be extremely flawed, and Alumni like us and ones from other MAC schools, will not like the outcome. It will basically be similar to last year's basketball tourney where a team like Akron wins alot more games than another school (From a BCS conference), but is snubbed because a group of committee elitists decide that we are not worthy because we are "From the MAC". The NCAA totally sucks. I love Zips athletics, but I know that being a fan of Akron means that we will never get a fair shake. -
The web site for the Capital One Bowl says that we will have to wait until halftime of the game to find out who won.

Great Story about Dwight Smith. He is raising his son as well as his two brothers. Mr. Smith is a great football player and a great father. He loves Batman, and wants to be just like Bruce Wayne someday. A Billionaire! Maybe he'll eventually give some of that cash back to Akron.Tuesday Conversation: Dwight Smith By Charles Robinson, Yahoo! SportsDecember 4, 2007 MINNEAPOLIS – Four years after returning two interceptions for touchdowns as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl XXXVII, Dwight Smith once again finds himself in the middle of one of the NFL's most opportunistic defenses. The Vikings lead the NFL with seven defensive touchdowns this season, including one from Smith during Week 12's 41-17 road drubbing of the New York Giants. Minnesota returned three Eli Manning interceptions for touchdowns in that game, and left Smith beaming about a young defense with the potential to be among the league's elite. He took time out last week to talk with Yahoo! Sports about the Vikings' strides, his personal life, and why he won't go anywhere near teammate Darren Sharper's hyperbaric chamber. Charles Robinson: So can you draw any similarities to this defense and the great one you played with in Tampa Bay? Dwight Smith: It's two totally different things, because we're so young around here, you know? That was such a veteran-laden team in Tampa. It's more exciting to see young guys come together the way they are doing it here. Robinson: What about the talent similarities? Smith: We've got some great linebackers in Chad (Greenway) and E.J. (Henderson). We've got a couple of young corners in Antoine (Winfield) and Cedric (Griffin). There's the big guys in the middle of the defensive line (Pat and Kevin Williams) and a lot of other young guys who can make plays. You just have a lot of young guys growing into it. By the time I got to Tampa, I was the young guy adding to that veteran mix. Now I'm on the other end of it. Robinson: This defense gets some similar results to the unit you played on in Tampa, but in different ways. Smith: Exactly. In Tampa, we were more of a get-after-the-quarterback pass defense, but we had some troubles stopping the run. Here, we don't have any of those troubles against the run, but we've had some problems in the passing game. Same overall results, but definitely doing it in different ways. Robinson: So how is your life off the field these days? Are you living well? Smith: Yeah. My son (Dwight Jr.) just had his eighth birthday. My grandparents are still alive and kicking, so everything is lovely for me. I got custody of two of my brothers, too. They are 15 and 16. To see them basically trying to walk in my footsteps is something. One just lost in the state semifinals in football. Robinson: You're Mr. Mom these days, huh? Smith: That's exactly what they call me now. At 29, I've had them for six years. I've had to grow up really quick over the last few years. Robinson: You're a big movie memorabilia guy. How is the collection coming? What's the coolest piece you've got these days? Smith: I have a life-size – bigger than me – Batman. It's the George Clooney Batman. I'm a huge Batman guy. I have a whole room filled with neat stuff. Robinson: You're a big Bruce Wayne guy, right? That's your favorite character? Smith: Oh yeah. The Wayne family ran everything. They ran Gotham. And he was a billionaire. He was a billionaire and he was Batman. That's what I'm shooting for. Robinson: A billionaire? You might have to play for a while. Maybe you'll have to sneak a few naps in Darren Sharper's hyperbaric chamber and extend your career. Smith: Hell no. I'm scared as hell of that thing. I don't know what kind of air it's kicking out or anything. It's the Michael Jackson thing – the Michael Jackson chamber. I'm not getting in that thing. Robinson: He's never tried to convince you to sleep in one? Smith: He knows better. He knows I'm not getting in that damn thing. Not at all. I can't figure out what that thing is for. I've been playing football 23 years. What do I need that thing for now? I'm never – never, never – getting in that thing. Robinson: One last thing: I've got to ask you about this story about what you did to your grandfather's car. Start from the beginning. Smith: (Laughing) OK. I was about seven years old, and my grandfather was out warming the car in the morning before it was time to go. And then he ended up going in the house for something. I stayed in the car, and I got really curious. So I put the thing in reverse, and there it went. The car went backward and got stuck between a telephone pole and a light pole, and both of the doors had been open, so they got smashed – the doors got caught on the poles and went in the opposite direction. Robinson: Were you in the car when it happened? Smith: No. As soon as that car started moving, I jumped out. Robinson: Man, I bet you got into trouble. What did he say to you? Smith: There wasn't anything to say. Basically he whupped my ass. I knew better. Robinson: Well, just remember that story when your son does something similar. Smith: Oh, we're already past that point. He's already testing me. But you know, that's how it is with kids. Charles Robinson is a national NFL writer for Yahoo! Sports. I would offer the job to this guy! He is the most successfull coach in NCAA history and is right in our back yard. He has a great gig where he is and may not take the job, but why not offer it to him? What was Mount Union football before he arrived there? Nothing. I doubt that MU could match our compensation package. OSU hired a proven winner from a lower division and it paid off (I knew it would). Akron needs to at least attempt, to do the same thing. This guy has the ability to make Akron a dominate force in the MAC.http://www.muc.edu/athletics/men_s_teams/f...larry_kehres__1

The problem is two fold: #1, our QB's stare down Arthur and don't even wait for him to get open. So many times this year our QB's are throwing the ball to Arthur when he is double and even triple teamed. When that happens there is always another receiver wide open. Week in and week out, the game announcers continue to comment on this as well. #2 Both QB's, especially Jackson, just have not figured out how to play the position. Jacquamain is either not experienced enough or just plain not smart enough to read defenses. As far as Jackson is concerned, our offense is one dimensional towards the run whenever he is in the game and every opposing defense knows it. CJ11 sucks at reading defenses and CJ7 is even worse so what does that say? Unless CJ7 becomes a passer over night, I would not allow him to ever take another snap. I'll agree that most of the secondary receivers suffer from the dropsies, but they are also getting very few opportunities. Does anyone know if Harvey can make it back next year. I thought I read a post a while back that he has returned to school and is attempting to turn himself around academically?
