Excellent Article On Boise St. vs. Oregon Ending
you am i replied to GP1's topic in Akron Zips Football
Next week, Miami U. is at Boise State; two weeks later, Boise State is at Bowling Green. Depending on how things shake out, BGSU may have a chance to knock off a top 10 team at home. Miami, not so much. The only two MAC football teams that have that distinction, that come to mind, are Marshall and Toledo. I may be wrong, but I seem to recall Miami beating LSU a long time ago, but I don't know if LSU was ranked high at the time. -
I live out of town, but I was in Akron a few weeks ago and paid a visit to the campus to see the stadium. The pictures that are being posted here are great, but seeing the Info up close is really something. It is a very impressive impressive structure. Also, you guys are right. That plasma center is awful. I hope that someday that block will be bulldozed and the campus will expand south.

Its the same guy, per his bio at packers.com, which mentions that he is in the Packer's Hall of Fame and that he now coaches football at SVSM.There is a different Mark Murphy who is the president of the Packers. Can someone who is familiar with the St.V's football program confirm or deny the author's comment about Mark Murphy being a member of the Packers Hall of Fame? I think he has him confused (very common mistake) with the OTHER Mark Murphy, who's career was slightly before the St.V's Mark Murphy. I think the Irish DC played his entire career with the Redskins, didn't he? The Packers' ex-player and current Chief Executive Officer is a different Mark Murphy, not from Akron. And Kara Murphy is the daughter of the ex-Redskin, current Irish DC. Or then again, I might be full of beans.

Akron can realistically aspire to be a top-level MAC football program, and a top-level MAC program should be able to be competitive with any mid-level BCS team. I have always admired Fresno State's "anybody, anywhere" mentality. I'd like to see Akron get there someday.

A QB in the CFL has to be mobile.

I tuned in to this game with about a minute and a half remaining in regulation. I guess I jinxed 'em. 2 goals in 42 seconds. 59 seconds and 17 seconds to play. I think this just showed how good BU was -- they refused to lose.Bowling Green won the NCAA title in hockey back about 1985 or 86, I think it was. Not sure if the MAC has any other team titles, but I feel one coming on at the men's soccer cup. Wouldn't Miami University's conference affiliation for hockey be the CCHA, not the MAC?

SVSM 59, Thurgood Marshall 53.

He died back in 1981 so he has been somewhat forgotten, but Ray Bliss (as in UA's Bliss Institute of Applied Politics) was a major figure in the Republican Party in the 1960s and was well known nationally at that time. He was the national chairman of the Republican Party from 1965-1969. I always thought that he was the UA grad who made the biggest name for himself nationally, outside of athletics.

And he's got a great mom! -
Usually a player who tranfers from a Div I school can play the following year if he goes to a Div 2 school, but because Threet has already transferred once (from Georgia Tech to Michigan) he will have to sit out a year no matter where he goes, even to a Div 2 school. So he will most likely end up in Div 1.BTW, his transfer from GT was due to the firing of the coaches who were responsible for his recruiting and not because of his play.

It's Cardinal, not Cardinals. If it was Cardinals, their mascot would be something other than a giant redwood tree.Anyhow, it's not April 1, so it can't be April Fools Day. Harris is an excellent QB coach and Jacq will benefit greatly from his teaching. Long term, what does this mean? I still think one way or another, JD is finished after 2009. I don't like the idea of Montgomery being the next head coach, but I do like the idea of Harris being the next coach. Harris took Pitt to a BCS bowl the year he was FIRED from Pitt (they haven't been back to one since). He is a strange guy, but the success was there at Pitt. Harris could be the next coach at Akron. This is the second time you've said that Walt Harris was fired (or FIRED) from Pitt. I don't recall it that way. His last year at Pitt was 2004 and he was named the Big East Coach Of The Year that year. He also led Pitt to the Fiesta Bowl on 1/1/05, although they lost decisively to Urban Meyer's undefeated Utah team. According to a Pittsburgh newspaper article at that time, at the end of 2004 Harris's agent wanted Pitt to renegotiate his contract or let him go. It became a moot point when he took the Stanford job, although apparently he interviewed at Stanford without Pitt's permission. If they wanted to fire him, wouldn't they have been encouraging him to look for another coaching job? I recall that some people at Pitt were unhappy with him, but it seems unlikely that they would fire a guy who was just named the conference coach of the year and who took them to a BCS bowl. Are you sure about that? Or could it be that they "fired" him after he announced that was taking the Stanford job?You can call it whatever you want. He was basically fired at Pitt. Pitt started his last season 2-2 and the Post Gazette ran a bunch of articles on who the next coach at Pitt was going to be. Pitt had a great remainder of the season and went to a BCS game. No matter what, Pitt did not want him to come back for another year. Again, call it what you want, but he was fired.Since ALL of the stories of the time, national, Pittsburgh, and Stanford, say that he resigned, I'll call it resigned. There are too many sources to list. If you've got ANY source, even one (other than a fan blog), saying or even suggesting that he was about to be fired after being named conference coach of the year, I'd like to see it. You'd think that someone would have picked up on that story. Just trying to be fair. He's one of our guys now.

Niki's suspension is for a total of three games, including one game she has already missed. Her first game back will be at Akron on 2/21, although she is practicing with the team and will be allowed to sit on the bench for the next two games. She faces charges of DUI, driving under a suspended license, and having an open container of alcohol in her car. It happened in the early morning hours during the week and she was pretty drunk. The suspension seems about as light as it could possibly be.

Niki McCoy was arrested last night for drunk driving and has been suspended indefinitelty by BGSU. She tested at 0.781, I believe, which is pretty impaired. I never heard the story behind her transfer but this shows bad judgment on her part, at the very least. For her sake, I hope it was a one time stupid mistake.

If I'm adding the numbers correctly, Roberts is 50/52 from the line. Based on his 21 games played and a minimum of 2.5 free throw attempts per game required, the NCAA apparently rounds-up and so he would have needed 53 attempts to qualify for the free throw percentage lead.

You ask if it would be a breach of contract for BC to fire him if he interviews, or if it would be a breach of contract if he takes the job. The answer is: it depends on what the contract says. Some contracts have loopholes and some don't. For instance, a coach may have a contract saying that he will not accept another head coaching job during the term of the contract, and then he does anyway (see West Virginia U. and Rich Rodriquez). Then its just a matter of having the lawyers figure out the damages to the jilted school. Many times the penalty for a breach is built right into the contract, such as "if you take another head coaching job during the term of this contract you will pay us $1,000,000." And if Rodriquez's contract with WVU had said that he would not leave "unless Michigan offers me a job" then obviously there would be no damages.Firing a coach for even interviewing for another job would seem to be something outside the terms of most contracts. Absent something in the contract specifically prohibiting that, I think the coach could sue the school if the school fired him for that.

Main/Exchange Apts/shops project
you am i replied to ZippyRulz's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
IIRC, this is not intended as student housing. Its supposed to be a bit more upscale, I think. -
If I recall, when Huggins gave his first press conferecne at the time that he was hired he said his goal was to bring an Akron an NCAA championship. Now at that time he was not "Bob Huggins" yet and so the statement seemed brash, to say the least. Still, I remember thinking, his players are listening to this and they probably have never heard anyone talk like that about the program before. He got my attention.

Talk about frustrating. There's really no excuse for that. Someone in the sports marketing department has to be aware of this and yet it goes unfixed. If this was a private enterprise where people had to be answerable for profit/loss those season tickets would be much easier to buy.

I actually see this as sort of an Urban-Meyer-to-Utah kind of move. I think Meyer's move to Utah from BGSU was an increase in salary to $500,000 per year, and Utah, although a respectable mid-major, was not thought of as a football power at the time. Realistically, Hoke might not have been able to do much better if he wanted to make a move this year. He's a hot name right now, so why wait. I think he would have gone anywhere for the same opportunity. I really don't think he factored the pleasant San Diego weather into his decision. Well, maybe a little.

How many of you are/were Engineering majors?
you am i replied to ksu sucks's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
really? Interesting. What is it that you would say makes UA's dept. better?(I always thought those rankings were BS anyways)UA actually cares about its students. Pitt does not care about its students, but rather research dollars and posturing in the rankings. What a joke. As UA increases its research profile, I hope it maintains the student emphasis. I would be ashamed if it ever became like Pitt.I'm just curious; why is your PhD degree from Carnegie Mellon if you did all your work at Pitt? -
Play Boise State at Boise State for your bowl game? 1600 miles away? In the wintertime? No Thanks.I don't know what the payouts are, but as a fan I'd much rather go south for the GMAC bowl against a good C-USA team than go to Detroit for a lower echelon Big 10 team.

JD Critiques, the 3-3-5, Recruiting etc.
you am i replied to InTheZone's topic in Akron Zips Football
One reason to presume that JD will be back is that nothing has happened yet. It would seem logical that, if it was going to happen, it would've happened right after the end of the season, as was the case with Miami, BGSU, and EMU. The selection process has to be well under way for those schools. The news broke that Tom Amstutz was done at Toledo while there were still a few games left in the season, so they had a head start on the process. Its being reported that UT will announce the hiring of Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Tim Beckman tomorrow. -
"Has any coach in a major US sport, at the pro or collegiate level, been the head coach of BOTH teams that constitute a heated rivalry?" None that I can think of. Stengel managed the Yankees and the Mets, and they were rivals of a sort, but that doesn't really count since they never played one another when he managed. But (with advance apology to Dead Horse) if Cowher goes to the Browns next year, he'd be the first. I'd call the Browns/Steelers a heated rivalry.
