  1. That was some time back. I forget the story. Why didn't he ever make it to UA?

Williams, who grew up in Tampa, signed with Akron out of high school, but when he didn't qualify academically USF assistant Rich Rachel placed him at Fort Scott Community College in Kansas, where he had once coached. It wasn't intended, but the move took him away from the distractions he had in Tampa and helped him mature.

    Nice find, Cap'n

Thank you! I guess it would have helped to have read the article!

  2. Revisiting the question of which of the trio of freshman forwards gets redshirted, I just spent some time going over the stats from the JCU game.

Euton was the first to play, and was on the floor for 16 minutes, or 40% of the game. I think everyone believes that he is least likely to redshirt.

Green had the second most PT at 8 minutes (20% of the game) and Egner the least at only 4 minutes (10%).

Ordinarily, you might guess that Green has a slight edge on Egner based on PT alone But what a 4 minutes Egner had. He scored 10 points and had 5 rebounds and 2 blocked shots in 1/10th of a game. Those are pretty impressive raw stats even if they came near the end of a blowout against D3 players.

I think it may be important to have at least 2 of these 3 freshmen get some game experience this season now that the possibility of Nik leaving a season early to play pro ball in Europe has been brought up. Along with McKnight's graduation, that would leave the Zips a little short on experienced forwards if 2 of the 3 freshman forwards should be redshirted.

Dave, excellent points. I thought Egner played his way off the red shirt band wagon as I watched

his excellent performance. He brings an electric athleticism that is only matched by Quincy Diggs.

Did you VOTE for AMPI today?

Maybe Egner's PT was initially limited simply due to his sprained ankle?

  3. Wanted to welcome you all to the BSU blog OverThePylon. Our gameday countdown post will go live in a few hours, but in case you were curious about Coach Parrish's weekly teleconference, our BSU football podcast, or wanted to stop in during the game for our Liveblog and streaming, feel free to check us out.

Any BSU fan that thinks this is going to be some giant blow out isn't paying attention. I'm very nervous about this game.

The only thing BSU needs to worry about is the bus driver taking a wrong turn on the way to the stadium.

  4. Good find Zak. Bottom line though, they have to be more competitive next year.

+1. I don't see us being very good next year either. But we must simply be more competitive. The third year will be the telling season. Then, if iCoach fields a consistent contender, we'll all love him and tell people we knew he'd be a winner from the get-go.

  5. I'm mad because Tim Carroll didn't get to play. I don't care if he isn't a player anymore, I wanted to see some TC. I could see him over there on the bench, in his tie and sweater vest, itching to go in, knowing that a year ago, this would have been the type of game he would have been all over.

Last time I saw Tim on the court was a month or so ago at the Rec ruining the opposition. Just like this John Carroll game, you don't realize how talented Akron basketball is until you watch them play against guys who thought they were hot stuff in high school etc, etc...

Yeah, I wasn't close enough to get in on that game... Although, it would be fun to see how one could fare against a legit Div. I basketball player.

Tim is an awesome basketball player, just as any players are that can make it on Coach D's squad.

Well said, and this couldn't be more true. This is a pet-peave of mine. The general Akron-area population is almost entirely ignorant about how good Akron's basketball players are. Most folks I talk to seem to think that if you started on your high school team, then you could play for Akron. I simply don't understand this incredibly ignorant sentiment.

Did you know: The chances of playing D-1 athletics is less than 1%?! If you take 100 high school basketball (or football :puke: ) players, statistically speaking, less than one of them will be good enough to play at the D-1 level. Only 7% of high school athletes will play on any collegiate level (so those players from JCU were definitely the absolute studs of their respective teams) let alone the D-1 level.

I think Akron athletics would get more respect in the community if people realized this, but, unfortunately, they don't seem to.

  6. Might want to back off on the Can't program in football. Talking smacking against a .500 program from a winless program just makes you look like an idiot.

If I'm directing my comments at the same thing as K-Roo, and I think I am, it's a direct hit at their inability to draw attendance....whether they're bad or average.

did the math and they need to average a tad over 11k for their final 3 games to reach that 90k mark.

I saw the stands at the Ball State game. There were 2,000, if you rounded up. However, the box score said 16,000.

With "tickets sold" being the reference number, they should have no problem with 11k/game. Local businesses are buying them up at $5/ticket, or less.

I also watched much of the Ball State game and noted in a separate thread that their actual attendance was no stronger than our embarrassingly lousy attendance @ the Info this year.

The general vibe I sense - and it gives me hope - is that people want to support the Zips, if given a reason to; it doesn't seem that anyone really even wants to support Can't State football.

  7. Yes, and the head coach gets high marks for this 30-0 drubbing.

Just like he did on Wistrcill and Proenza's pre-hiring standards:

    1) Prior head coaching experience. CHECK.

    2) Innovative strategist. CHECK.

    3) Gets the most out of his players. CHECK.

    4) Well-respected by players and peers. CHECK.

    5) Treats colleagues and fans with professionalism and kindness. CHECK.

    6) Will excite our fanbase and bring large crowds to InfoCision. CHECK.

    7) A proven winner the city will rally behind. CHECK.

    8) Makes superb in-game adjustments. CHECK

    9) Wanted by every other D-1 school with a coaching vacancy. CHECK

    0) Most importantly, acquainted with Tom Wistrcill. CHECK

name someone who has all of those?

The point is Ianello doesn't have one. How can any program be this bad? Please act Dr. P!

Ahh, I get it now. I too was a little confused by your post.

Actually, I believe you mean to say he has none of the above qualifications, save #10.

  8. Hey Hartville, did you sleep though this "rat-bastard" Cleveland media portrayal of the Zips?

    http://zipsnation.org/forums//index.php?showtopic=20218

Wow. How profoundly disappointing. I'd rather lose to anyone in the country rather than Cleveland State.

Now I absolutely guarantee you the rat-bastards Cleveland media will be all over this story.

    Screw you, Cleveland.

At least LeBron kicked you to the curb. We still have that going for us.

EXACTLY my point. This is the painfully rare exception that proves the rule.

I've been watching the Cleveland-centric televised newscasts for over two decades now, waiting, waiting, waiting for some recognition and acknowledgment to be shown to Akron. Has never come. If the past is a good indicator of the future, it will never come. If Cleveland chooses to pretend Akron doesn't exist, we can return the favor. The King sure did. Cleveland can crumble into the murky lake.

    Go Akron! Go Zips!
