  1. Lord, have mercy!

Sounds like AU may get the dreaded "Death Penalty," ala, SMU?

Thanks for summarizing this, DiG. I hope you keep on top of the story for us - I just don't have time to dig through all that info.

Also, it makes you wonder what goes on at many other "top" programs.

What is the story with SMU, Blue & Gold?

I bet things like this happen much more often than anyone would expect.

Could Auburn leaving the SEC trigger another conference shakedown?

Ahh, sorry - I should have taken the time to be more precise. The SMU "Death Penalty" happened yeeeears ago - when I was a little kid, maybe before I was born, Idk. I do know it was way before I knew anything at all about college football. But SMU used to be a perennial national power. However, they were cited for multiple & serious recruiting violations & had a ton of schollies taken away - almost killing the football program.

  2. The WAC now trying to lure North Texas. When you're trying to lure a mediocre team from the worst FBS conference, you know are in big trouble. Once this is all over the WAC's profile will be lower than the MAC's. Of course at that point that MAC will be even further from the top tier than ever.

It already is. A little birdie in the Hawaii Athletic Department told me San Jose St could announce their departure shortly. That guy who's been the commish for the past 20 years should have his statue dedicated outside a sewage treatment plant.

Right. If I remember correctly, just a few years ago the WAC was home to a number of BCS-busters: Boise State, Fresno State, TCU & those epic, high-scoring Hawaii teams, one of which went undefeated until getting beaten by Georgia in a major bowl game.

  3. Sure it is. Someone always believes that anything is neither as good or bad as someone else does. It's one of the immutable laws of human nature that for every belief there are alternate beliefs with differing levels of perceived validity.

What about a guy who predicts the exact score of a game? What if ten guys predict the score exactly?

Sometimes things are exactly as they appear.

Read it again with the highlighted words.

You should have highlighted "always", "anything", "immutable", "laws", and "every". Those are some pretty black and white words for someone whose sig reminds our faithful readers of his affinity for shades of gray on a daily basis.

Lol. Good call, w00t. In this way Dave is indeed a bit of an enigma. He is most definitely our resident expert in regards to sports-related statistical analysis (the realm of black & white), yet his signature insists he is happy with shades of grey. Lol.

  4. GoZips, bearer of bad news. Brett McKnight has played his last game as a Zip.

Brett is not likely to suit up again. The reasons are many and not all of his making.

    Enough said.

Bad news indeed. I feel more grief for his parents than anyone. Though we'd never met, I loved those guys; seem like great people and terrific parents.

Does Brett (hopefully) get to keep his scholarship & get his degree?

  5. Rightly so, a caller to the Univ. of Akron FLAGSHIP station, 1350AM WARF (which, seriously, should change the "W" to a "B"....since that more accurately reflects listeners' thoughts about UA football), just asked the LOCAL call-in sportstalk show (3-6pm...prime drive time weekdays) why they have had flushes coach Doug Martin on multiple times, but we have never heard from Rob Ianello.

The hosts were leery about answering, but did offer that they have a good relationship with the UA Athletic Dept., but have been told that pursuing an interview (at any point this season!!) with the head football coach was "A DEAD END, we'll leave it at that."

I ask you, how idiotic is this schmuck? He alienates his players, colleagues and fans....and has the arrogance and audacity to believe he's "above" sharing any thoughts with the local flagship station?

Haven't we all heard and seen enough of this guy? He can't possibly be relieved of his duties too soon.

This may be true. But the hosts of the 3-6 pm drive show are a bunch of idiots so I put little stock in anything they say when it comes to UA.

The main host is a UA grad and all he talks about when it comes to college sports is guess who? Just what I like to see, another UA grad with a platform to promote the Zips...rooting for the buckeyes..

I had it on for 5 mintues today and all they could talk about was tosu basketball. Really? A show that was supposed to be dedicated to NE OHio sports and UA is another tosu talk show. Just what I've been waiting for....more luckeye talk.

The idiot (Ken) makes fun of UA and the MAC all the time so I wouldn't talk to him if I were iCoach either.

The best show 1350 airs at the 3-6pm time slot is when the national guys fill in...

I can't wait for the show to get canceled.

Tragically, this is description is quite accurate. I was awfully amped when they began the show and planned to listen every day. The show was billed as being about AKRON sports. Not Columbus. I was especially excited when they gave the impression that the show was going to focus on AKRON and not Cleveland. Sadly, it only took about 10 minutes for the show to turn away from the Zips (and even the Flushes would be okay) and turn into the disgustingly all-too-typical Cleveland/Columbus-centric talk show. If you want to know anything about the

COLUMBUS Suckeyes, the CLEVELAND Browns, the CLEVELAND Indians, the CLEVELAND Cavs, or why our AKRON show is hating on AKRON's own LeBron James in favor of the Akron Cavaliers, oh wait... I mean the CLEVELAND Cavaliers - silly me - then by all means, turn into 1350 AM between 3-6. :puke:

On the other hand, if you want to get insight into anything Summit/Stark/Portage or even Medina County or, most especially, the AKRON Zips? Do yourself a favor and don't waste your time w/ 1350.

  6. Last time I checked, Akron and Cleveland were the same pro sports market. Unless, I guess, you identify more with the folks of Appalachia like some Akronites do. Heck, most of those folks imitate mountain folk in appearance and accent.

So you're saying LeBron, Rome, Dru & the Fab 5 must be appalachian mountain folk? Or at least identify with that sub-culture? Hmm. Well, at least you get points for trying.

  7. Zips Signee Dylan Brumbaugh was named 1st team Div 1 all NEO Inland. Congrats and lets hope you have a stellar career at UA. I had the chance to see Dylan play 6 times this season and he is going to be a good player for the Zips. Sure would be nice if the Zips could land the RB from Marlington.

    All NEO Inland

    Dylan Brumbaugh, Green

    6-5, 265, Sr., OL

Akron recruit. Two-way force in the trenches. Helped pave way for Green to gain 368.4 yards a game.

I've met the Marlington RB you're referring to - Alden Hill. The "kid" is ABSOLUTELY HUGE.

  8. My $0.02. I love B-Mac & his scoring potential. But on most nights he wouldn't be "on" and yet he'd still be a black hole on offense. He was great during the rare occassions he was "on" (i.e., Pitt during his sophomore season). But he usually wasn't.

I like Euton's passing. He seems to already have a higher b-ball IQ than B-Mac, and, since we weren't as athletic as Dayton, I think our quick ball movement & passing to the open shooters really kept us in the game & gave us a chance to win.

I'll bet w/ B-Mac out there (w/ his ball hogging, ill-advised shot selection, non-existent D & lackadaisical rebounding) we would have lost by double-digits v. Dayton.

  9. This is the monetary equal of you or I giving a handful of change to that guy on the street.
Maybe it's more about the time and effort than the money.

James said he's overseeing next week's Akron events from afar. The families chosen to be part of the Thanksgiving giveaway are connected to the Urban League and the Akron Public School system. "Even though I'm not going to be there, I was on all the calls and making sure everything is ran right," James said. "I mean, it's not like I'm a rookie to the whole situation. I kind of know what needs to be done."

You're right, i'm sure those 2 calls really cost him a lot of time.

This is a pathetic attempt at positive PR.

Hey Root4Roo, I love Akron Sports NOW.com, but don't forget the first sentence of your tag-line: "NOT Cleveland."

  10. LeBron Donates 1,000 Computers to Akron Public Schools

Not sure if this has been posted already, but like him or dislike him, you have to admit that's a genuinely nice thing to do for a school system that can really use the help.

I saw this one too. Unfortunately, even though he did these things types of things for his hometown of AKRON, even before he left the city up north and took his talents to South Beach (:wave::rock::nutkick: ) now all the folks in Akron who still have an identity crisis & are Cleveland wanna-be's will always play the "just a PR move" card.

LeBron can't win - damned if he does; damned if he doesn't

  11. "At halftime fans would be treated to the most boring marching band halftime show in recent memory as Ohio’s Pride would put everyone in attendance to sleep with OPERA MUSIC. Yes, as if the football team wasn’t bad enough, the band has to add to the misery with 19th century opera music."

  12. Due to an appointment, I was relegated to watching the game online last night. I liked what I was able to see. I'm actually shocked at how hard the team is playing. If I was 0-10 I think it'd be tough to get motivated. Very impressed by that.

I also liked the play calling. The tailback throwback to Nicely was an incredibly gutsy call. That's the sort of call that, if it works, it is seen as brilliant; if it doesn't work it is viewed as stupid. But either way, it sure was gutsy, and, since it worked, I'll say it was brilliant!

Painful loss for the coaches and players. In position to win with 1:30 left and we fumble the ball on what, around the 10?

I'll be there next Friday as we avoid the 0-fer.
