  1. Thanks for the link!

Great article! Unlike most of TP's UA drivel, this piece was not patronizing in the least. Excellent, serious-minded read.

    Here's a great quote:

"Before the [championship game], [Porter] told us two things," said Nanchoff. "He asked us to promise him that we leave everything on the field -- no regrets about how we played. Then he asked us to remember that the players on the team will be our friends for life."

Nanchoff said the second part really became reality after the game, when the team went to the beach.

"To celebrate, we ran into the [Pacific] ocean," he said. "Some guys had their uniforms still on. The coaches, the staff, all of us went right in. The water was cold. We were laughing. It was a real moment to remember."

A championship moment to be forever savored, one that no other Akron team had ever experienced before.

That makes me appreciate the Ocean Celebration video footage all the more! That was a sincere, spontaneous & forever-memorable moment in those young men's lives. Priceless!!!

  2. Well, I've got to be honest. Thus far, this seems to be a very mundane MAC-level recruiting class iCoach is putting together, doesn't it?

With iCoach's recruiting reputation (but not much of a reputation for anything else), I was really expecting more 3-star recruits than what we currently have.

While I'm not impressed either, remember to not put too much weight in the "stars" from recruiting sites. How many of our past 3-star guys have gone on to be actual stars?

    Very true.

  3. ....and lets hope they don't lose their momentum, and start filling those courtside seats in the basketball venue this winter.

    Definitely.

The 'Rowdies sounded great on tv. What if the 'Rowdies would come up with some chants to sing during the basketball game? I think you guys have a nation reputation now as America's soccer hooligans. Maybe carry that over into the JAR. Would that help get some more 'Rowdies out to support the b-ball Zippers?

  5. Look for an area HS coach to be named as a new assistant.
Is this, your source of information? Will you ever let anyone on this forum consider a source for your information?

Interesting thread. There's a Root4Roo sighting to be had over there! Laying the smack down on someone who thought St. Ed's could have beaten "Akron U" this year.

  6. If someone was raised in an environment where "Akron U" was a derogatory name, I understand entirely how someone could be highly offended in calling their university Akron U. Much like calling it Hilltop High, I suppose. Where I grew up it wasn't a slight to call it Akron U. It was almost kind of a pet name. So I've never been offended at refering to the school as Akron U. In conversation, I occassionally find myself still refering to the school as Akron U. But I never use that term on this board; no reason to needlessly offend anyone.

    Go Zips!

But I think the "Gold Standard AU" thing is pretty cool.

  7. I guess we can put Akron U into the same category as LeBron, Cleveland and other subjects that will always drive some folks up the wall and won't bother others in the least.

Imagine if all the energy used in hashing and rehashing these subjects could be redirected into something productive.

Who do you think you are Dave in Green?

We must stay negative. We must make untrue broad generalizations like Akron hates the Cavs. We must take every opportunity to rip on things we hate instead of simply enjoying the moment.

    (sarcasm alert)

Actually, the untrue broad generalization is that Akron hates LeBron.

  8. I'm often less-than-impressed with 1350's Drive Time Akron coverage, so I just wanted to say that yesterday's 1350 AM Drive Time show was very good! Lots of Akron. Lots of UA futbol.

Additionally, Ian from the 'Rowdies called in and conducted a very good interview while coming back from the College Cup. They even began to delve into the topic of why we can pack Lee Jackson Field but have just so-so crowds at the JAR for a 20-win, MAC-contending basketball team. Very entertaining, insightful and even educational!

    Great show!

  9. Holy Crap, they did! But at least it was only South Florida (a PERFECT Big East opponent for a MAC school).

And I agree, thank the Lord for soccer. I'm so glad not many seemed to notice the humiliating beat down Temple gave us. Sheesh.

  10. Also, I think you're doing a good job with ASN R4R. UA athletics can use all of the attention they can get. You're definitely doing your part for UA sports. I know you guys have been covering the city series and then some during football season, but I was wondering if you'd be doing the same for hoops? Lots of basketball talent in this area too!

Thanks....and YES we are going to be covering a lot of hoops. Football was tough this year as we got in the game late but basketball should be good. There is a lot of good talent in the area, girls and guys...hopefully some state titles for the area.

Also, anyone interested in Summit County HS football should check out the Turkey Day Summit County All-Star game on Thursday at St. V. No Buchtel players obviously but still should be a very cool event.

p.s. Working on adding some new writers as well (looking for some btw if anyone is majoring in some sort of media, is a good writer, or just wants to as a hobby...message me or email at mike@akronsportsnow.com)

Hey RootforRoo44, as a blogger perhaps you could look into this and get some answers. The Summit County All-Star game was originally announced as a Summit v. Stark County All-Star game which I was incredibly stoked about. Needless to say, I was quite disappointed when it failed to materialize. Could you do a little digging and find out why Stark County either bailed or was un-invited?

No problem...ill get back to you. I was actually wondering the same thing.

    Awesome. Thank you!

  13. cleveland has a basketball team still? even if they did, no one in Akron cares. But I do know AKRON HAS A SOCCER TEAM! AND THEY ARE AMAZING! GO AKRON! :NCAAC: LETS KEEP CELEBRATING AKRON'S CHAMPIONS! LEBRON IS AN AKRONITE SO JUST QUIT WITH THE SOUR GRAPES. LETS JUST CELEBRATE AKRON SOCCER! THEY DESERVE IT! :NCAAC::NCAAC:

Wait, Cleveland has a basketball team?!

Amen, brother. AKRON is his hometown and he's proud to be an Akronite! (Even if some Akronites aren't.)

Has there ever been a professional athlete that is more loyal to his hometown than 'Bron? Honestly. And if so, who? And what are the odds the greatest basketball player on the planet, an athlete ESPN bows down to on an almost daily basis, name drops AKRON every chance he gets?! The stars had to perfectly align for that one.

Btw, I'm as big a Zips fan as anyone, but I always called it Akron U growing up. Playing backyard ball, we'd count 1-Akron U, 2-Akron U, 3-Akron U before we could rush the QB. I've never been offended by it.

But anyway, thanks for the shout out LeBron & for your loyalty to your hometown despite some doubters and haters who think Cleveland has something to do with Akron.

Akron loves you clap, clap, clap, clap, clap.

    Representing 330.

  14. New offer: QB Clayton Moore, JUCO

    Story on Moore.

Looks to be a nice possibility. Originally committed to Ole Miss...getting an SEC "cast off" would certainly not be a bad thing!

I like the possibilities of this QB situation:

    SR Rodgers

    JR Nicely and Moore

SO Potts (if not moved to S)

FR Pohl and D'Orazio (if not moved to S)

Figure 1 guy with 1 year of eligibity, 2 guys with 2 years and, most likely, 2 guys being redshirted in Pohl and D'Orazio.

I just hope that Moore would be given a chance to compete for the starting position.

I saw D'Orazio once on tv last season. That's obviously not a very big sample size. Lol. But, having said that, he was clearly more of a running QB than a passing QB. He really wasn't a very accurate passer. I'll be surprised (pleasantly surprised, mind you) if D'Orazio turns into a difference-making D-1 QB in the Pro-Style set.

  15. I live in Broadview Heights which we get our news out of Cleveland. Barely 30 seconds coverage of the Zips national championship on the news last night, nothing on the news today. Pathetic! This accomplishment should be headline news for NE Ohio!

Yup. Get used to it. The Cleveland media purposely ignores any positive news coming out of Akron a.m.a.p. (As-Much-As-Possible). This isn't bitter hyperbole. This is a sadly literal truth.

If you've been starved of Akron/UA Zips' television coverage coming out of the Cleveland-centric newscasts for as long as I have, you understand perfectly why Akron's homeboy LeBron James feels no loyalty to & no identification with the city up north.

Go Akron! Go Zips! And for that matter, Go Heat!

  16. I also used to think that futbol was boring. I never played. However, I did play baseball, and it used to irk me when someone would say baseball was boring. I just knew they didn't really understand the sport very well. Once you understand a good baseball game, you realize that there is strategy behind every pitch selection. As I've begun to learn a little about futbol, I realize it's just like that. There is so much going on out there. And a good soccer match?! CRAZY!!! What an absolute rush! There is no sport as consistently... relentlessly... MERCILESSLY tense and stressful for the spectator than a good futbol match! I believe a good futbol match LITERALLY induces hypertension. No wonder fans chant & cheer throughout the entire course of the contest and absolutely explode on GOOOOOOOOOOAAAALLL!!! You've just gotta release that energy or you'll have a stroke!!!

I'm truly just beginning to appreciate this heartwrenching/exhilarating sport which Europe - and most of the rest of the world - has loved for a long time now. The highs and lows of futbol are simply magnificent! This sport is like a drug!

Great job Zips! You've made us all exceptionally proud!

  17. Thanks Tom!

Here's another seemingly all-too-familiar quote from KD:

''He is way more coachable now. He still has moments where he gets emotional, but he has bought into what we are saying and what we are trying to do,'' Dambrot said. ''I think it helps that he is playing much more now. He feels no threat about playing time. He is more relaxed.''

I love KD. But any casual Zips' observer can now see this as a recurring theme: Jimmy Conyers... Brett McClanahan... Nik Cvetinovic.

I hope KD begins to see the pattern here.

  18. What a killer schedule they've assembled! To be 4-2 with a schedule like this is impressive.

    From today's ABJ:

"The Owls, who are members of the Atlantic 10 Conference, have a 6-2 record against a rigorous early season schedule.

Temple has beaten the likes of Seton Hall (62-56), Georgia (65-58), Maryland (64-61) and Georgetown (68-65). The victory over the ninth-ranked Hoyas came Thursday night. Its losses have been to California (57-50) and Texas A&M (54-51)."

Gonna be a tough one today. Go Zips!!!
