The Larger Problem At Hand
ZipAlumn replied to tbozeglav's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
With respect I have to disagree a bit. Yes the soccer team should have a better facility, but so should the rifle team and they a first class also. There is only so much money to go around and despite their problems the football team does bring in more revenue than soccer. Also I don't think anything would change the mindset of the NCAA. Big Conference vs Little Conference. Big venues (with video boards, large seating capacity, & lots of close by parking) vs Lee Jackson Field type venues. Big money vs "Akron type" money.I am really mad and nothing will make me happy over this. The least Northwestern can do is get this match shown on the Big Ten Network. The least Chryst and Rhoades can do is pitch a fit to the NCAA. But probably neither will happen because when you're screwed --- you're screwed. :nutkick: :rolltide: -
I went to the NCAA web page and filled out their "Championship Survey" just to be able to sound off at the end about their switching sites. The survey seemed more concerned with the the video screen at Championship locations and the sale of NCAA souveniers than anything else. The NCAA belongs in the

I gave Rasor my two cents about his "cheap shot" about Akron being at fault for poor drainage at Lee Jackson Field ......... it was taken down despite my "tongue biting" lack of profanity.

You can send an email to the a-holes at the NCAA at:http://www.ncaa.com/feedback/ncaa-feedback.html :mad_flame: :mad_flame:

Exactly what did the OSU coach say or do. I wasn't at the match but I would really like to know. I would also like to know why the next match is being moved out of Akron. If this is for sure I will definitely be bombarding the NCAA with a few of my thoughts .... just like I did in 2006 when the Zips basketball team was given the green weenie.

Everything that I have ever heard about Gerry Faust says that he is a generous, caring, likable, honest guy. However I have seen him around campus several times and I go out of my way to avoid him. After several years of Zips Season Tickets, I bought a single ticket to the first Zip game under Faust ... a Division 27 team that he completely destroyed. I knew everything I needed to know on the Zips first TD pass to the end zone. Only two receivers went out and they ran into each other in the corner of the end zone ... that was a Pee Wee league play. Faust should have been in the Marketing Department not coaching. :gun: :wall: :gun:

6 OSU Players Suspended!
ZipAlumn replied to tpsjugglerdude's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
You have to admire the commitment Coach Bluem has to team discipline to suspend six players in an NCAA Tournament match for "violation of team rules". This is type of coach that seems to wants to have his team win the "right way", but realistically there is not the pressure on a Soccer coach that is place on a high power Football or Basketball coach. -
To prove my point ....... Michigan who lost to the Lady Zips just beat the #12 Woman's team in Vanderbilt 50-42. Don't forget the Lady Zips beat Michigan 58-49. Michigan is not the Big Ten "Bottom Feeder" that some have called them and this victory for the ladies is really a quality win. I look forward to seeing the women have a very successful season.
-
With all due respect ..... or all the respect this post is due. Just forget using the words "Zips" and "Bowl Chances" in the same sentence. IMO even if the Zips had beaten Ohio and Temple and stood at 7-5 they would not have made any Bowls. :nono: :nono:

The loss to St. Bonaventure was only four points and the win over Michigan was nine points. How many times in past years would you have expected both these games to be losses by ten to twenty points or more. This year's team I think shows improvement and like the men's B-Ball team will get better and better throughout the year. Expect good things from the women.

For my money the Zips should be one of the TOP FOUR SEEDS overall. Not #6, not #8, not #123. I am really sick of the NCAA's rationalization for rankings, seedings, and tournament selections in Football, Basketball, Soccer, and Tiddlewinks. No matter what sport, the Zips seem to always get the shaft. :nutkick:

What I would like to know is how you got back into the stadium during the last 30 years. I learned my lesson about five years ago when I was told that I couldn't smoke in the stadium, so I stepped just outside a gate and stood there and smoked a cigarette not five feet from a Rent-A-Cop. The SOB wouldn't let me back in and I had to buy another ticket just to get back inside. The same policy applied to the JAR, not that I smoke anymore. The University doesn't really care about the convenience of its patrons, and I am not really sure what they care about sometimes.

If I remember correctly almost every win under Huggins was tough, especially the years we had few scholarships and Huggy raided the football team. Bob Huggins was a fantastic coach who got the most out of his players. With no disrespect to KD, but for my money Huggins was the best coach the Zips ever had in basketball, and the University "done him wrong".

I came to "Akron University" in 1964 when it was still a municipal university, with 5,000 students and only 500 in the dorms. With very few cars, most everyone stayed for the weekend and a feeling of comradeship developed. Finals week usually featured a water fight between the men's and women's dorms, and the faculty (including various Deans, Vice Presidents, and once even the President) joined in. You developed a first name basis with all the athletes and often a varsity member joined in the pickup basketball games in Memorial Hall. Since entertainment opportunities were limited, we went to every basketball game and really tried to get to the Rubber Bowl for soccer and football games (no buses then). With a small on-campus number of students we developed a real feeling of family and compete distain for "townies" who we never saw after 5:00 PM anyway. The university became our home and everyone there (even the janitors and campus cops) were our family. When we had suggestions or complaints we knew who to see and the majority of the times we were listened to and actions was taken. Those were simpler times and those feelings have lasted over the years. I made a special effort to hire U of A students and graduates either part time or full time when I could and I still attend lectures, plays, concerts, and athletic events at the University of Akron. My biggest complaint now is how far I have to walk to get across campus as opposed to when it was all contained in one square block. With all the changes one thing does remain constant and that is that .......... :screwks:

You are correct about the students not paying for the cost of construction of the stadium. As for the credit card fee and even Akron's "transportation fee", yes others factor in those costs, but they are usually a little smarter than to separate them out of the general costs and get people all riled up.My main problem with the costs of higher education is that for almost 20 years the costs of higher education has outpaced inflation often by huge amount.

Hey – we all know there were times like the 2004 game with Marshall on ESPN2 that we packed the Rubber Bowl with more than a few freebie tickets – but that game was a launching pad for our image and we needed to show the nation a solid crowd in the Rubber Bowl. That game specifically paved the way in changing a lot of opinions about Akron, about the City, and was vital in moving the stadium project forward. Akron football, for a night, was a national story and it mattered. The stadium project had been bandied about in various incarnations for years, but after that game in 2004 it really gained steam. That Marshall game/win may well rank in the Top 5 moments of Akron Football history along with the bowl wins, the win over NC State and the 2005 MAC title game.Just because it worked in 2004 doesn't mean it is applicable to 2008. We have a hell of a lot more to "sell" for the upcoming Buffalo game than we did vs. Marshall in '04.Hey...if they want to charge $1 for such a pivotal game...have at it. Just don't tell me you're running a deficit.Do the math ........ For arguments sake let's say that without the promotion we would fill the bowl with 10,000 at the single game general admission price of $12. That brings in $120,000. We would have to fill the bowl, the plate, the kettle, the skillet, and a couple of water glasses to bring in tha kind of money at $1.00 per ticket. The Marketing Department are a group of idiots .... case closed!

:thumb: What he said ..... I'm one of those "old-timers @ UA" and even I think this is one of the all time dumb ideas of our Athletic Marketing Department. We should put everyone in that department on "Merit Pay", oh wait we can't do that because the University would be in violation of the minimum wage law.

What he said .................... :thumb:

I attended many Acme-Zip games from the early 60's through the 70's. While I was saddened at the end of this tradition ... I really didn't miss them. For my money the entire promotional idea of the game had run it's course and lost it's appeal. I may be wrong but towards the end was the soccer match before the football game dropped? I know that I am not wrong is saying that in the later years this was no longer a family event, but an excuse for the kids to show up in groups and turn into hooligans. The last couple of games I attended unsupervised young kids bombarded those of us in the seats with cups of cokes or anythings else that came to hand. When they tossed those mini footballs into the stands that was an invitation to start a fight nt he stands. Mom and Dad no longer brought their family but gangs of kids showed up to run wild in the stands. At least that was the way I saw it and why I quit attending the Acme-Zip game even though I had season tickets to for rest of the home games.

Are you sure that this game was that good ... I must have been watching some other game!

Zipmeister said"What a load of crap. The marching band was fantastic back then. And it frequently looked like the drum major was going to break his back he was arched so much. I always stayed and listened to the post game concert while the traffic cleared out. You must have been on some heavy duty medication to have the memories you do."First of all I am probably one of the few students in the sixties that didn't indulge in "heavy duty medication". And from the middle to late sixties the University of Akron Band probably numbered between thirty to sixty members and they were NOT VERY GOOD. The band director that followed Mr. Winter did dramatic improve the band and it became much better in later years, but I was talking about my well remembered years from 1964-1968.
-
Congratulations .... well deserved.
-
I would also like to see the same things back, well maybe with the exception of the band ... the band sucked back then. My first day on campus the Band Director tried to "recruit" me, and I never played an instrument and can't read music. They used to turn the lights in the stadium off to allow the band to walk on and off the field before they stood still and played ... no kidding.

I like Class of 82's suggestion .... "Get Jim Dennison" Not that he would ever return, but for my money Dennison accomplished a whole lot more that JD. And don't tell me that he never accomplished anything at the D-1 level. He was never given the chance. Whether or not we need a new head coach JD is no better or worse than a number of coaches in Akron's history ... Blair, McMullen, Larson, etc.

It's nice to see someone that takes a loss like this on an even keel and doesn't go overboard with crticism.
