  1. Headlines in Friday's Canton Repository read: PETA says Can't State's mascot too terrified to be at gamesHere's the link: http://www.ohio.com/news/19592749.htmlIt seems to me that in years past the same headline could have applied to some of their football teams.
  2. Ken Lolla is an excellent coach, a great guy (ran into him at some coaching clinics) and a real ambassador for the sport. He should get some credit for laying the foundation of what UA soccer appears to be on the verge of. HOWEVER, it's not like the Zips were also-rans before he came aboard. Regardless of how he left his HC position, Steve Parker (NCAA D-1 Coach of the Year in 1986) obviously had the program at a pretty high level prior to Ken's arrival. The Zips have been blessed with very good soccer coaches over the years. In the 60's & 70's Stu Parry laid the groundwork for the teams we have today. While soccer never has been "high profile", Coach Parry took what he had and over the years laid the groundwork for a very good soccer tradition by taking the team to the NCAA Tournament a couple of times if I remember correctly. To all of our great soccer coaches
  3. I've been saying it for years on this board. As it relates to college athletics, the answers to your questions are yes to question #1 and no to question #2. In fact, college athletics marketing is so void of any original thinking or creativity that many schools have move to ISP to market for them so they can have some level of professionalism in their marketing and sales. The only thing people in athletics marketing are really good at is promoting themselves. We had a marketing director for a while at UofA who produced a steady decline in ticket sales annually and because he was nice to everyone, everyone thought he was some sort of marketing genius. In the world I work in, a steady decline in sales gets one fired and not loved. It's amazing what people will fall for. What is constantly amazing me is that a University that offers degrees in Business and Marketing can have a "three steps behind" Athletic Marketing Dept. Why can't we use some of the talent in the College of Business or isn't it any better? This is not only a slap at out Athletic Marketing Dept., but it also calls into question what kind of Marketing Degrees our College of Business is offering.
  4. What happens with the five that lost their scholarships this year (six in two years) on the women's basketball team? If this does anything to the basketball team like what happened to the football team, with the number of scholarships available to BB, we won't be able to offer a scholarship until 2020. Or am I wrong?
  5. That information is just great ............ In 2008 and after I will be at each and every home Soccer match if possible.
  6. This just sucks. I am so disappointed. He couldn't even outrun the cops, what does that say about team speed, let alone team character.
  7. That would be good, as much as I was raised to hate Akron lol, I think if we collaborated more, we'd give schools like OSU a run for their money.Alumni idea is good too.Our family started that "Alumni Association" a couple of years ago. I have two daughters, one that graduated from Akron and one that graduated from Can't State. At Football games we sit on the Zips side one half and the flushes side the next half. At basketball games the grandkids dress according to the school of their mother's choice. I, being a graduate of the U. of A., I have appointed myself the "impartial arbitrator" of all disputes.
  8. I totally agree. A coach is in charge of his/her program, and getting a college education for playing a sport is one of the good thing that can happen to a young person. However losing a half dozen players in two years in this manner should cause somebody to step back and say "Whoa, just what is happening here?"
  9. Gee ... I kinda like that "refrigerator magnet idea". Maybe then we can really spend some money and go to yardsticks and and lighted pens.
  10. I didn't see your post, but quite frankly I doubt it was erased because you were too critical of Coach Dambrot. I've seen too many posts about how Dambrot is a poor coach, how nobody on the team could make it on a pickup team in their neighborhood, and how the only reason we lose games is because of the referees. A coach sometimes makes a mistake, a player now and then has a bad game, and while I have often been critical of the officiating rarely are they the reason a team loses a game. In sports, like life, mistakes are made. Now and then somebody is just a little bit sharper, quicker or has a better day than you. Sometimes you get the short end of the stick, but life is not always fair. The intelligent person just grins and bears it, and doesn't bitch too much because they know that it really doesn't help anything except lower their blood pressure for a short time.
  11. I would love to see KD recruit a player that is ranked top 150 in the entire country, then Akron would truly dominate. Having a recruit that is one of the best in your state, doesn't necessarily mean he is a high impact player. The crop of players at that position could be particularly weak in that state during that year. I would also like to KD recruit a player hat is ranked in the nations top 20 at their respective positions.I like our staff to recruit good student athletes. Who care where some internet site rates them...I completely agree with Captain Kangaroo ... although I personally think that KD has recruited some excellent talent since he has been here.
  12. U-Mass was taller, quicker, and more athletic. And who said they don't play defense or shoot free throws. Still Zips were more than respectable. Congrats to the team and coaches for a very good season. Proud to be an Akron Alumn.
  13. Just play a good game, the game the Zips are capable of playing and I will be happy no matter the outcome. Just don't embarrass us with a game like "that team to the East that shall not be named" played Thursday.Oh and FYI Akron Alumni '69 ... I remember the Division II NCAA Tournament years.
  14. The team from the East looked really bad today. Why couldn't they had one of those type of games when they played us. Then again I do think we should have pressed full court a little more than we did the last couple of games against them.
  15. I'm with him. Disappointing loss to be sure, but I refuse to criticize the program, the coach, or the players and still firmly believe that our basketball program is moving forward. This team will lose four quality athletes and individuals, and next year will be a rebuilding year, but I think the foundations are solid and I can't wait to see the fresh faces next year. Ced, Nick, Jeremiah, and Quade... you will be missed!!!Completely disagree. The game can be summed up in three words. Our seniors sucked. Correction SUCKED.For once I cannot pin this on Dambrot. By my count we missed 9 point-blank one-footers, In addition Wood was awful from the line. Middleton and Dials missed countless WIDE-OPEN threes. Dials couldn't even in- bound the damn ball. We have another golden oppourtunity to go dancing and we lay an egg. It all started back in February of 1998 when Can't beat us at home in the JAR. Eleven seasons later we still cannot beat them when it counts. So when the JAR is empty come next November we can once again look back and see that when it really matters, we don't win....and our worthless alumni won't be back.Twenty-two seasons and counting for me. I won't be disappointed if the NIT doesn't come calling....ENOUGH OF THIS CRAP .......... Sometimes you get beat by a better team, sometimes you lose when you shouldn't, sometimes you open your mouth and bitch when you don't know what you're talking about. Twenty two wins is a good season no matter what. You don't like our schedule, go back and look at the teams we played. How many of our out of conference teams had a winning record, how many are going to the dance. If we are in such bad shape how come all those teams in the MAC that are supposedly better than us weren't able to beat the ZIps when they had a chance. If Dambrot is such a terrible coach why does he have such a good record especially in light of the past. Why doesn't he go the JUCO route to get players with "iffy" reputations. If next year's team is going to be so bad why did we give all that playing time this year to the two McKnights, Roberts, McNeese, and Bardo. If our seniors were so bad how come we had such a great year, and we did.We lost three times to Can't because they were a better team, just like last year we beat them three times because we were a better team. Deal with it and quit bitching ........
  16. There are only 5 seniors, Sallee has one more year of eligibility but i dont think he is playing next year. And FYI Sallee has started in games before, he started a game in Alaska.GoZips.com lists Sallee as a senior. And for the record , even if it is K.E.N.T., I would hope that all the seniors get into the game, at least for a couple of minutes.
  17. I totally agree ........ I am so tired of Strength of Schedule and RPI that I could scream Besides it is always nice to scream There is no logical reason that Miami or Ohio should even be considered a better team than Akron because of their SOS or RPI. We swept them both once on our floor and once on their floor. The Selection Committee when it comes to "bubble teams" first contemplates their navals, next talks with their barber, picks their nose , and then finally picks the teams that strike their fancy. Akron get no respect, the MAC gets no respect, and we are in a one teams conference, so deal with it.
  18. Went to Cleats in Green because they said that they would have the game. They didn't get it, instead the screen kept saying "Program not purchased". What a bummer, spent $22.00 on drinks and never saw the game.
  19. The Fox & Hound is NOT carrying the game. I called and I am not even sure that they have ESPN Full Court.
  20. I've heard that before ..... Zips now up by 9 but this is a real sloppy game.
  21. Miami over Ohio 37-14 at the half. The way Miami plays defense that will be a pretty big deficit to overcome.
  22. As long as we win and Miami beats the Bubbacats. Currently 29-11 Miami with 5:05 in the first half.31 - 11 Miami with 3:45 to go in 1st half GO REDHAWKS
  23. I agree, today VCU played a better game and were the better team. No excuses, no regrets, no whining, we got beat and it happens.
  24. I am not so sure we want to run with VCU, they looked awful quick and athletic. They play a tough aggressive defense. Maynor looked fantastic, hopefully Linhart can slow him down. But no matter who wins this one ..........
