  1. We definitely need more concerts downtown. We currently don't have any at all. Neither the Civic nor EJ Thomas bring in bands. An arena could be used year-around to bring patrons to the restaurants downtown before and after events.FYI .... Akron's Recreation Department holds free concerts at various parks every night of the week during the summer and two of them are downtown. I believe that one is Wednesday noon at Cascade Plaza and the other is Thursday evening at the Akron Art Museum. Also Lock 3 (?) has concerts periodically downtown during the summer. Then there is the periodic events on Main Street like the Ribs Burn Off that feature concerts. These are all outdoor so no arena is involved. For my money the City of Akron does a very good job of providing downtown entertainment during the summer.
  2. There are a lot of things that I think KD could do better. There are a lot of decisions that he makes that I disagree with (i.e. keeping McNeese in the Can't game as long as he did helped contribute to our loss, IMO). However he is the coach, everything is his call, and his coaching record is definitely better than mine was in youth basketball. You can't argue with results, and KD can stand on his record any day. I   to his expertise.
  3. Sorry about that I forgot that nobody on this board reads the Beacon anymore. http://www.ohio.com/sports/15098091.html
  4. There is a very nice article concerning Stevi Large in Saturday's ABJ. Quite often we forget the Akron has other athletic teams outside of basketball or football. We also are fortunate to have excellent athletes also in the so called "minor sports" sports. In my opinion there are no "minor sports" at Akron only those that haven't caught the imagination and/or attention of the student body or the U. of A. fans.
  5. According to the ABJ, Singletary was arrested for a DUI on Saturday morning (read after the bars close) and then was suspended indefinitely. As someone who did more than his share of drinking during his college days, I can't be too critical of this only to say that during the season athletes probably shouldn't be out drinking. The Can't State boards say that this is the third suspension for the sophomore, and that says more about his character to me. :CK_brew:
  6. No .... and I'm still upset that Tony Laterza wouldn't let me "walk on" unless I could take Jerry Sloan or Rich Turner off the dribble........
  7. When all is said and done what disturbs me the most is not the hard foul by McNeese, not the T's against Ham 'n Cheese and Quade or even the throwing of trash by the K.S.U. students (well maybe that does bother me). What really bothers me, as one who played the game a long - long time ago, is the antics after the game of Quaintance and Mincy if the stories are true. Sports are supposed to teach good manners and sportsmanship and after the battle you should shake hands and show your opponent some respect. There is no place for dancing, sticking out your tongue, giving your opponents the finger, etc. This is basketball, but I know what would happen in football the next time the two teams met, and Mr Quaintance would probably spend a little time in the hospital. That's not good sportsmanship either, but that's what would happen.
  8. K-Roo Said:Realtime RPI has Akron at 69http://www.realtimerpi.com/rpi_midam_Men.htmlOhio 39Can't 44Miami 53Akron 69Guess all we needed to do was get blown out by a top ten program iand we be in the 40's????Somehow I can't get too excited or pay too much attention to polls, surveys, or whatever they are that two teams that Akron has beaten (one handily) ahead of the Zips. I would like to repeat that the game is played on the court, not in the newspapers or the fantasies of some so called "expert".
  9. I am truly thankful that "Adam" did transfer to Ohio U. I also firmly believe that without Bubba the Bobcats very well might have won that game. "Might Have" on second thought they would have.
  10. Thursday night 9pm games ain't the way to get it. You lose the blue hairs and the families. Looking at the UA hoops demographics, that's a significant section of the fan base.I shudder to think how empty the lower reserved section will look on TV. Thankfully no one in TV land will be watching.I'll be one of the "blue hairs" that will be lost for this game. I usually attend home games but with the nine o'clock start on a weeknight makes it just too late. When the game is over at 11:00 or 11:30, and then the drive home makes it a little late to get up at 7:00 the next day. So six of my friends and I will be in my living room with wings and beer, and we will all be home well before midnight.
  11. I complained when the Zips missed free throws, and in a coupe cases over the past couple of years it cost them the game. Tonight they did FANTASTIC at the foul line, and that was the difference in this blood bath. Oh, by the way in case anyone has forgotten ...... :screwks: :screwks: :screwks: :screwks: :screwks: :screwks: :screwks:
  12. I was not able to connect ... I got the same message ... so I turned on the radio and listened to the game.
  13. Lose to the #1 (supposedly) ranked team by a couple points in double overtime. Mop the floor with another team that is ranked ahead of you and get disrespected because of your SOS. I've said it before and I'll say it again .... the game is played on the court, not is newspaper columns or in the minds of idiots.
  14. Went lurking on Miami's forum before and after the game. Before the game Akron couldn't compete because we played a "cupcake schedule" and were just a bunch of "crybabies". After the game we won because Bramos was "sick", and McNeese hit all the threes he is ever going to hit in a lifetime in tonight's game.Gotta love those sweaters .... even when we shut them up with a blowout, we can't really shut them up.
  15. As i listened to WNIR today, i heard the voice of the ZIPS mention the BIG Game............ but only the BIG game he was refering to was the OSU and LSU football game. I heard it mentioned at least 10 times, and only once did i hear anything about the real BIG game, the Zips against the Pinkhawks of Miami on Saturday. Maybe he could have given them a few plugs during his show today, or yesterday, or even wednesday...... he is after all the voice of the Zips, not OSU!How can we expect to get respect from the NCAA when the University doesn't even mention a big game in Zipmail. If the national media ignores the Zips maybe they are just taking their lead from the local radio stations and newspapers. :wall: :wall: :wall:
  16. I am not sure .... could it be that the way the team plays basketball they are always "sweating out" close games?
  17. Skip-Zip .... if I remember correctly our RPI at the end of last year was 64, but even the NIT didn't come calling. I honestly believe that more important that SOS or RPI is the amount of repsect (or pull) you have in the "old boy's club".I think Akron could and should schedule a tougher OOC schedule, but acting as fodder for teams like Kansas, North Carolina, Duke, etc. is just plain silly. Cincinnati, Nevada, Butler, Dayton and these type of teams on a home & away basis is a better way to go. Then when Akron can consistantly win these games go up to the next level.
  18. With all due respect I can't understand the reasoning of playing an extremely tough SOS if you lose all the games. When you play six really tough teams and lose four or five, then combine that with the loses in the conference, what makes anyone think they will get an invite to the big dance?
  19. I did not know George, but I did know Stu Parry and what he did for UA soccer set the stage for a winning tradition in UA sports. My thoughts and prayers also go out to the Parry family
  20. You people amaze me. Your team just took the #20 team in the nation to double overtime and you're basically calling them losers. There were several players on this team that had outstanding games tonight. Granted, the last second plays were not good (they never seem to be), but Akron played a hell of a game.I agree .... great effort, great game, proud to be a ZIP .............
  21. How nice for the Dayton Flyers ........... :zzz:ZipAlumn - Are you   because you could give a rat's about what Dayton has done OR have you been snoozing through the Akron out-of-conference schedule that pales in comparison to Dayton's? I'm assuming the former but the latter is just as possible. Both?I am completely bored (and put to sleep) with those that speculate in advance about how great they are and about how they will dominate an opponent before anyone even steps on the court. Dayton has a very good team, and Akron's out of conference schedule could have been better, but the game is played on the court not in the fan's imagination beforehand. Be that a fan of Dayton or the University of Akron, as we have some posters that seem to believe we will clobber everyone we play and can't accept a close hard fought battle.
  22. How nice for the Dayton Flyers ...........
  23. I for one could care less about strength of schedule or RPI. I honestly believe that the MAC is a one team NCAA Tournament conference at this time. Last year the Zips had 26 wins and they were not all cupcakes and look what happened. The problem is the perception of the media, the coaches, and the tournament selectors, and the MAC does not get any respect from any of them for various reasons.
  24. I only disagree with the rebounding comment. Against a much taller team the Zips split the rebounds .... 33 apiece.
  25. :mad_flame: Is that a call out or what ???
