  1. As someone who has supported Akron University sports for over 40 years this thread really pisses me off. I went to every home game (and raised hell in Memorial Hall) in the 60's when I was a student, how many students today can say that. I never wasted my time worrying about who was yelling and who wasn't because I was too busy cheeering. I had reserved seats on the floor (where AK-Rowdies sit today) because there were hardly any students at the games in the early 90's. I've sat in the snow and rain at the Rubber Bowl when the band outnumbered the students at a football game. It seems to me that over the years us "old geezers" have almost outnumbered students at soccer matches. Now that the Zips have started winning a few basketball and football games the students suddenly think they have a corner on the "support my team" market. Quit worrying about who is standing and cheering and just be thankful that there are a lot of us around that support the Zips when the "student fans" can only be found at the Bucket Shop (showing my age again) or the Winking Lizard.
  2. Seeing that most of these players are lucky to take off their warmups.... Dambrot must have done an outstanding job getting this team to 22 wins.I agree that the Zips were neither physical, quick enough, or had the height or size to compete consistantly with a California or Nevada, but what team in the MAC has those players. This team had a great year all things considered, and next year will be even better.
  3. Well Said ......... I've followed Akron Sports (all of them) for over forty years and this team is not the best I have seen, it is a TEAM and it is very good, The coaching and execution was extraordinary all year. Everyone on this team is young, from Linhart to Dambrot and will learn from this game and next year should be better. Fans should always respect and support their teams no matter what.
  4. Akron went 22-9 and that is NOT shabby. Sure they lost a couple games that they should have won, but anyone who has ever played sports knows that happens. They lost a game to a team (Toledo) that was much quicker, and got hot at the right time in the game. The season was not a disaster. Face it the Zips did not have height, quickness, or attitude all season, but still put together a good record. Congratulations to this team and coach. I am confident that these young players and young coach will learn from this season and come back stronger next year. I read posts all year about how great this team was, now I'm hearing how bad they stink. They are a good team that will get better, but they have to take the next step and get a few more athletes.
  5. Back in the 60's (God am I tha old), they were asking the same questions about attendance at both football and basketball games, and the answer then was the same as given today. I think it's true. Almost all the students at Akron go home at 5:00 and you never see them again. Although I really believe that student attendance at basketball games was much better (percentage wise) than it is today. Thi was probably because bak then cars were few and there was not much else to do around campus except drink or attend the rare campus activity. You also use to hear a lot of complaints back then that none of the players were from the Akron area, so nobody knew them, but that is no so today. Can't does NOT have the same excuse when it comes to off campus students.
  6. Don't misunderstand me ... I don't think we "failed" and I know we can't go 18-0, but I do think that the losses on the road to Buffalo and Miami deserve a stronger rection from KD than they got. Like I said, Buffalo had a fantastic game, and Miami is a good team, but our performance in both those games was not what this team is capable of doing, and KD should have said so. I don't know what he said to the team in private, but his public comments did not thrill me.This is a good team ... not a great team ... but better than almost all in the MAC. The way Can't is playing now will make Saturday a tough game and "lighting a little fire" under this team wouldn't hurt.
  7. Yeah, the wine sippers a good at making those accusations. Too bad Miami wasn't on that list. What about Ohio and Bowling Green?
  8. It concerns me that KD seems to be making these comments at this time of the year. The performance of this team now seems to be up then down. They were up for Ohio after being down at Miami, then they were down against Buffalo. Yes, Miami and Buffalo played great, but even so we should have beat them. I feel that the coach should have come out strong about the team's effort. If we lose Saturday and then in the first round of the tournament (God forbid), what will KD say then .... "Wait til next year"?
  9. Lived my entire college career on campus ... either in the dorms or in an apartment.1st year - Thompson House (now torn down)2nd year - Sisler-McFawn3rd year - Spanton Hall4th year - Apartments on Brown Street, Day Street, and College Street (it was a long year)5th year - (no comments please) ISA House (now also gone)Had a great time no matter where I laid my head.
  10. The Zips have nothing to be ashamed of, they were simply beaten by a much better team. I don't think any team in the MAC could have done any better last night. Nevada was unbelievable with their 3-point shots and nobody in the MAC can compete with the Wolfpack's size in the paint. Nevada is a good major college team, not a "mid-major" and really doesn't belong in the "bracket buster" format. Akron played hard and never quit, sometimes you just get beat by an better team.
  11. fear the brown roo said .... "i don't claim to be a basketball expert by any means but it seems to me there has been a lot of poor officiating this year. it's not just against the zips, the visiting teams in the jar have also suffered from it. the miami and buffalo games were embarrassing to me due to the officiating. a win is a win, but damn. "Regarding the officiating in the MAC, I also think that it leaves a lot to be desired this year. It doesn't seem to favor either the home or visiting team ... it is just so inconsistant. But missed calls, poor calls, and "makeup calls" can and does change the direction of the game. The coference should take a harder look at the performance of their officials.
