I thought about the divergence of these two programs just the other day after remembering the close loss at the Rubber Bowl in the late '00s. The Zips beat Cincinnati at the Rubber bowl 31-0 in '89 and narrowly won at Nippert in '92 (these predate my years at Akron, which began in 2001). We played a couple close games in the '00s (losing by 6 on the road and 2 at home). Since that close loss at the Rubber Bowl to the Bearcats in 2008, here's a summary of the programs: Cincinnati: 107-51 (0.677) 4-5 in Bowl Games 5 coaches 5 regular season championships 7 seasons with top 25 rankings Akron: 43-109 (.282) 1-1 in Bowl Games 4 coaches 0 regular season championships (1 tie for 1st in East Div) 0 seasons with top 25 rankings Yikes.

$30 for 3 games. Zips are 11 point favorites over Fordham tonight. If we win tonight, I can watch all 3 games (2nd round, 11/23 7:30p, 3rd place game 5pm 7/24 or championship 11/24 7:30p). If we lose tonight's game, it would be the only game I'd be able to watch due to work commitments (Loser's bracket games are morning/early afternoon the next two days). So the question is this: Am I willing to bet $30 on the Zips beating Fordham tonight? Are you?

Just got done cleaning up the yard for winter. Glad I spent my Saturday on that instead of this embarrassment of a game. Spring cleanup will be easier. Will save me time in March so I can spend my time up in Cleveland watching the boys cut down the nets. Seriously though, I can't recall a more pee-poor showing in a rivalry game in all my years of watching sports. And I'm a Browns fan.

Phew. That $20 makes me way happier in my pocket than it would've in the hands of the UA ticket office. Off to rake I go. I expected a much better effort today after the Ball State and WMU games.

This is interesting. Students will now be in section B, the first full section opposite the visitor bench. I hope students show up, cuz I would've loved those seats about 15 years ago.
-
Same for football. I tested some reserve seats and even tried a couple browsers to make sure the issue wasn't on my end. That means this issue has gone unresolved, across multiple sports for nearly 3 months. Definitely not a good look. I mean, Ticketmaster sucks, but you should still be able to use it to buy Zips tickets. AAAAAAAAAAAAANYWAY: I kind of wish this was on the Ocho. I like seeing how coaches play with the rotations in blowouts, and typically we'll see the end of the bench get some minutes as well. I just don't $15 and actually leave the house like it.

I tried to buy GA football season tickets online prior to the Bryant game and received the same message. I tagged the new AD on Twitter and got no response (I'm sure he had plenty on his plate). Called the ticket office and they just offered to sell me over the phone (and I'm weird about giving my debit card number out over the phone). When i said "no," the suggestion was just to visit the ticket booth prior to the game. TL;DR- I saved a lot of money because of the same issue and no one wanting to correct it.

Probably a relative. Could even be a son. Jake played here in the late 90s/early 00s I think...he's probably in his 40s now.

This is 100% it until someone proves otherwise. Akron is my alma mater and my only college team, and I've been to a grand total of 2 games in the last 3 seasons. I have not once stayed for the full game. It's just not fun to show up and spend $$ when you know your team is going to get blown out of the water and it's a wasted Saturday. Let me set up my stream on the Ocho and then I can turn it off at halftime and get crap done around the house when we're down by 4 scores. Hell, I'd show up even if we consistently kept games close, and I'm sure I'm not alone.

I watch just about every game, but haven't paid much attention to roster attrition and classes, but wasn't this what everyone was saying during years 1, 2, and now 3? Are we still calling them freshman because of the extra COVID year, or are these actually 18-19 year olds starting?
-
The timing is odd, and it only can be that Guthrie was waiting to see if bowl eligibility could be salvaged. That was cruelly taken away with that ending vs. Testicle Tech (not that we're beating WMU, Toledo, or Kent, probably). That being said, I wish Coach Arth best of luck. The results between he and the Ianello regime are similar, but the difference is that Tom is a likable guy that you want to see succeed. And I hope he does. I have looked into absolutely zero candidates at this point, but can we PLEASE get someone with a longer track record of success at a lower level? No high school coaches, please.

I honestly think Walton will be a key this year. He's the only one on the roster that can replace some of the slashing/penetration provided by LCJ. However, he does lack an outside shot to balance. Will be curious to see how he's guarded and if it allows for good floor spacing like we had with Jackson on the floor.

Someone better be all over Mumpfield. Edit: Who, incidentally, has no bio on gozips dot com. 🤦♂️

This has the added bonus of being the CBS SN game, so I won't feel the pressure to have it on the TV in the background. I feel bad for the kids under this staff just as I did under Ianello. Must be hard going into every game knowing you have zero chance to win, unless you play the perfect game. Do we have a chance to win any more games this year? Maybe a fluky 'they should've never won it' in a rivalry game with Kent? Seems like it would take a miracle at this point.

Today's Zips results plus watching BG get absolutely blast by EMU has made me suspend my Zips Optimist Club membership application for the remainder of the season. On to MACtion!
-
Just a microcosm of today's world where everyone has to be right and spend WAYYYYYYY too much time not changing anyone's mind. The fun part is, with the Bowden saga, both sides are right. It was time for him to be gone from Akron, and he still has something left in the tank for coaching. Anyway, we're nearly 2-touchdown underdogs to a pretty bad Buffalo team. After watching UB/OU, I think that spread is too small unless it's buoyed by crappy weather. Current forecast is partly cloudy, mid 50s with light winds, so that should affect much. Buffalo 35, Zips 14.
-
32.5 point underdogs!
-
The one with 31 ticks left was the difference in beating the spread. Oof.
-
I got a solid nap in after we fell behind 28-7. I'll set aside my ZOC (Zips Optimist Club) application for now.
-
I was hoping we'd see 2nd Half vs BG Zips, instead we're getting 2nd Half vs OU Zips.
-
Exactly how I'm feeling. I've been burned too many times with Akron football to be overly optimistic about one good half against a team that was picked last in the MAC. The contrast between the 2nd half vs OU and the 2nd half vs BG is quite stark. Put together two good halves in Oxford and I'll be laminating my membership card.

The Zips have soared to #124 in the USA Today FBS rankings, just one spot behind winless Arizona. Miami falls two spots to 112 after a close loss at the fightin' EMUs. Zips are 19.5 point dogs at Miami (Opened at 22.5) and will need to keep proving Vegas wrong to get any respect. Credit where credit is due, the team looked better in the 2nd half. Let's hope the QB situation works itself out and the improved play continues. Not gonna get 5 turnovers every game, most likely. Defense will need to continue to make strides as well.
-
What. Is. Happening. 28-13 Zips

Akron is definitely the less-awful team since the 2nd quarter.
