We only won 23 games last year although it was the all-time Division I win record for the Zips.I project a win at Miami, a win against BGSU, a win against Buffalo, and a loss at Can't State. (Actually I can't decide if we will lose at Can't or at Miami, but I think as well as Can't is playing it will probably be at Can't.)Also I project a loss against Duquesne. That will bring us to 23-7 so all we would need is a first round tournament victory to exceed our Div 1 all time win record.

I expected the game to be closer than it was. I guess it would have been if AP would have hit more of their outside shots. Some of it was the Zips defense but AP also missed a lot of wide open shots. It will be tough for the Zips to win next year at AP, especially if the Goveners are hitting their open 3s!

Toledo Game Live on the Internet
Zipgrad1990 replied to UAZipster0305's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I'm listening to the post game comments:Zips had no FGs in final 3:20Romeo foul trouble handicapped the Zips on defense because Romeo was trying to not pick up the 5th foul.Zips got out of their offense - too much one-on-one and not enough passing aroundIts hard to tell about the fouls being biased. I would guess so though as the MAC officials tend to favor the home team (which includes Akron when they are home). -
We are number 50 on the list of all time winningest teams by percentage:http://www.ncaa.org/stats/m_basketball/all...l_time_wins.pdfSome good programs are on this list.

The streak isn't big news yet, but I still worry about long winning streaks causing a team to believe they are better then they actually are and therefore the team on a winning streak lets up on intensity. On the other side all the opponents of a team on a winning streak try extra hard to beat you as they want to be the ones to end the streak! If we can keep the streak intact until we play you we will hit 11 just like AP. I was pulling for AP to continue their streak with the hopes that both teams would be on a winning streak when they met (assuming we can keep ours alive too). I will pull for AP to win every game but against Akron, with the hope that it will strengthen your RPI.I was in college when Akron was in the OVC and remember playing AP and Middle Tenn. It will be a turn back the clock day for me. I'll have to wear my old moving "A" sweatshirt, although I don't recall if those came out after we left the OVC or not. I think maybe they came out during our last year in the OVC.

If we won out the season and lost in the first round of the MAC tournament we would be 26-5 (we can't finish 26-4 since all teams make the tournament). If we loose in the finals we would end up 28-5. At 28-5, I would think the selection committee would have to take us regardless of our SOS. However I think we will loose at least 2 MAC games prior to the tournament - at Can't (Akron has only won there once in the last 40+ years) and at either Miami or Toledo. If we loose 2 MAC games and loose in the finals we would be 26-7 and that might not be enough for an at large bid. As some one mentioned they will pick a 17-13 team from a major conference instead, which is just a crime. I always like seeing a good Mid-Major team over a mediocre big conference team. And most years the mediocre conference team gets knocked off in the first round, but year after year its always the same mediocre big conference team over the good Mid-Majors that the selection committee picks. At least we have a chance in basketball for a national championship (slim that it is) where as in football we will never have a chance no matter how good we get. At least not if they keep the current BCS format that is.I wish RPI would bring back margin of victory in its calculations. Mid-Major programs like ours can't always schedule good teams so margin of victory would help get our RPI up higher if they still counted SOS in the calculation.

That's funny beating us by 15 at the JAR. OU has been a bad road team this year so far and every one knows how good we are at the JAR. They didn't beat us by 15 at their place, I don't know why they would expect to beat us by 15 in our house.

I would be happy with 500 to 450 during the football season! At least most people aren't so OSU crazy for basketball. So the OSU coverage during the basketball season is not an issue at all for me.I have no problems with spectators wearing other school's gear. I do have a problem with an AKROWDY having any school other than Akron represented.
-
A Lot of nuts? You mean we are crazy for the Zips or the fact that most of us are guys? Whatever you mean, WELCOME! And remember
-
I've always hated watching Miami's style of play. I'll still be there though and predict a 54-50 Zips win.
-
I concur! I was a big OSU fan as a kid, but once I went to The University of Akron I became far less of a fan of the Buckeyes. I was still pulling for them last night, but the fact that they lost was no big deal to me, other than I wanted them to be as highly ranked as possible for when they play the Zips in the fall. And I am so glad to not hear OSU all over the news all the time! I'm not an OSU hater, but I really get sick of the hype! Of course they have a good program and deserve it, but still! The biggest problem with the BCS system is that most of the money goes to the 6 major conferences. It would be far more interesting to have a 16 team playoff system, but that would mean the big guys would have to share with the little guys. As much as I like Boise State, I feel they would get crushed by either OSU or Flordia. So the little guys still have a ways to go.

OU had 35 FT attempts to Akron's 14. Seems like we didn't go inside enough until it was too late.

Hard to believe Can't still got votes after losing to CSU. I expected Akron to drop more in last weeks poll after losing to UIC and instead they went from 8-7. I think this poll took that into account and the fact that Akron has lost 2 of 3.
-
The only thing I could find is this website: History of AP Rankings It lists all schools and how many times they have been ranked in their history. Is shows CSU with 0 rankings. However if you click on CSU it says they were ranked number 20 in the preseason poll for 86-87.I couldn't remember if CSU was ranked before that game either. It was only when I read the preview on gozips.com that I saw that the basketball team has never beaten a top 25 team.
-
According to gozips.com the basketball team has never defeated a top 25 team. I didn't remember the CSU Vikings as being a top 10 team for that game as you mentioned but I didn't bother checking either. It was still a great game since CSU had been a sweet 16 team from the 85-86 season.I had forgotten about those cheap clickers! Ahh the memories, I can't believe coach Huggins got so much out of what little talent we had back in his Akron days. We have a much better team today, but I am not sure if Dambrot is the coach Huggins was in his Akron days yet.I hope tonight's game is rockin! Go Zips!
-
I remember the Cleveland State game. I was a student at the time too. It was a crazy enviroment and I believe it was the biggest crowd the JAR has ever had or ever will have. The cowd was over 7,000 and its not possible to fit that many in the JAR now as that was before they had seat backs on the upper reserved side.

Zips vs Nevada Predictions? The line?
Zipgrad1990 replied to RowdyZip's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Nevada 80 Zips 72, ending the Zips 21 game home win streak. Sorry they are just too big and talented for the Zips to handle. -
I still had faith. I was just commenting that Dru fires up too many 3's and the last won he missed before the big one he hit at the end was too early in the shot clock.Still the Zips tried to give it away at the end. Good win on the road Zips!
-
I have to give Dru credit for hitting the big three there!
-
I wish Dru would quit firing up 3s especially early in the shot clock like that. What has he hit only 1 tonight?

Akron@Niagara predictions and in-game thread
Zipgrad1990 replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Only 4 fouls on Niagra for the game so far - amazing! -
Luke Getsy has had a second 3 and out this quarter, the Zips are down 17-0 and their is less than 7 minutes remaining and WMU has the ball. If we get another series, please JD put in another quarterback!
-
The gozips.com live stats has the zips down 17-0 and Akron only has 10 yards rushing as a team. Kennedy does have a whopping 22 yards on 10 carries.

WINNING NUCLEUS FORMING FOR LADY ZIPS
Zipgrad1990 replied to ZipAnalyst's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
It makes far more sense to invest in the basketball programs than football. If for no other reason than its far easier to recruit 5-8 good players per basketball team verses the 22 or more players you need for football. I come from the Bob Huggins / Jerry Faust era and I'm still mad the university decided to concentrate on football at that time costing us coach Huggins. (Huggins would have left for a bigger program anyway, just hopefully not as fast as he did if the university hadn't decided to go independent to move from I-AA to I-A in football.)I'd love to see the Lady Zips have success. I don't remember them ever having a year with more than 15-17 wins over the last 20 years. And the last few years have just been unbelievable bad. I'll admit I have not followed the Lady Zips vitrually at all, but if they can become one of the better teams in the MAC I love basketball enough that I would probably start attending games. -
I have lost the faith - WMU 28 Akron -13
