  1. We had this one... And I agree with all that you've said QZ. I really believed we could have made a sweet sixteen run, because we are more athletic than Notre Dame U and we beat Florida State U in 08'. But I am very optimistic for October, we have a lot of good pieces in place. I really just want to say thanks to the team for fighting all year like they did. Hell, I remember praying we would beat Toledo after that dagger to EMU but we fought back and had a good shot at doing some major damage this season. We have a great program that this community needs to be proud of and that is something worth getting excited about. Keith Dambrot is a GREAT coach and as long as he's on our side we're going to have a program to be proud of. We played really good defense, just as a true Akron basketball team does but just went cold offensively. I think we beat ourselves, the effort was there, the defense was there, but we just couldn't get our WIDE open looks and bunnies to fall. We lost it for ourselves, Notre Dame didn't really have anything to do with beating us. Hell, we even shot 17 more shots than they did. This was truly a game we should have won. And when an impartial reporter for CBS writes that the referees swallowed their whistles you know the house has the cards stacked against you. Notre Dame U was what we knew they were, a bunch of prissy little rich boys who whine a lot and get by on the name on the front of their jerseys. But let this be a wake up call. Akron basketball is coming back next year and they're coming back twice as determined and twice as strong. We're on the doorstep and on the verge of breaking it down for the nation to see. Today Akron soccer, tomorrow Akron basketball. In the future, all of my extra money will be going to Akron basketball. We're gonna get this thing done.
  2. I've seen this commercial a few times too. It is pretty good and it's pretty hard to knock Mark Mothersbaugh because DEVO is very awesome. Although, Can't was a far more interesting, politically motivated and artistically flourishing place when he and the other members of DEVO went there. Sadly these days that school is mostly dead airspace, both politically and artistically speaking. Akron has a far more flourishing art scene these days... Which isn't all that bad for a school of scientists, engineers, and lawyers.. The underground music scene isn't too shabby either...
  3. Q: How are notre lame cheerleaders like bowling balls? A: They get fingered, thrown in a gutter, and come back for more... P.S. Rudy was a little sissy... GO ZIPS!!
  4. I know. We got absolutely no credit for beating the bottom 4 West teams...especially when we could only beat 2 of them. Hahaha. Yes, actually beating all of those teams certainly wouldn't have hurt.
  5. The UA Intramural Legend beat me to this one. The only way we could even sniff the CIT (which probably only me and the custodial staff at the JAR would even care about) is if we take it to the championship game and lose in some sort of closely contested overtime debacle. 22 wins would still have to be worth something, even if the bottom 4 MAC West teams continue to drag our conference, sos, and livelihood into the abyss...
  6. That zone sucks. It collapses to ball side so much that often two perimeter players are wide open Fortunately, there is no DJ Cooper on EMU. No wonder OU toasted us twice. You just can not leave shooters that open; ever. That was the big thing that I noticed too, not only in the EMU game, but in all of the games that the Zips have played poorly in. When the defense is bad they seem to really over pursue on the ball side and that Cooper kid has really been able to exploit both our late rotations in man to man and over pursuit in zone. In my opinion the big key in this tournament for Akron is going to be not getting out of position and biting on ball fakes, preventing late rotations when going man, and not over pursuing on the ball side when in the 2-3 or 1-1-3 zone that they typically change to. I think perhaps a big reason the zone has been successful for this team is because it forces them to not over pursue and get caught out of position on defense. This is why we got killed on the dribble drive against Can't in my opinion (because guys were late on their assignments in the man defense. Can't would just weave for a favorable match up or to get an angle on someone at the top of the key and drive when they thought they had a good chance to get to the rack). In a nutshell, just don't over pursue and hold your ground and you should be fine. During the 7 game winning streak I noticed players out of good defensive position very seldom. They were pressuring and in your face when they went man and had very few soft spots in their zone. If we play stout defense I have all the confidence in the world that our offense has enough firepower to get us to the championship. If I had any advice for the team for the rest of the tournament it would be to make sure to communicate and trust your teammates on defense. Just my .01 cents... Go Zips!
  7. I just hope Zippy is ready to go that early...
  8. I want to throw down against ohio u and Can't state u again as soon as possible. Bring it. All we have to do is get on a nice little 10 game winning streak to end the season...
  9. Big, big, BiG win! This game can springboard us right into a first round bye in the tourney if the Zips can keep taking care of business like they did tonight, especially with the next three at home. Keep up the focus, confidence, and intensity!
  10. I agree that Diggs has a decent stroke, but it seems like his 3 point opportunities should be more limited to when he's wide open and the shot is totally uncontested. The stop and pop long range stuff is better off left to Roberts, McNees and McClanahan. I'd like to see more of an isolation set up for Diggs and see if he can't take some guys one on one slashing to the hoop. He'd have a much better chance at finishing around the rim at 6' 6" than Abreu at 5' 9". I mean, if he does have some of that guard skill set why not set some plays up for him at the top and see what happens? Worse case scenario he drives too deep and dishes to Zeke who dunks it . Looking forward to Saturday. Preparing for the worst but hoping for the best with all that I have.
  11. The game is listed on channelsurf.eu, so hopefully that feed will work.
  12. I saw the Toledo game against BG as well and was impressed with Toledo's toughness. They played a pretty good game that night. Tod Kowalczyk looks to be a coach capable of turning that team around. Some of you might remember that he was UW-Green Bay's coach last year. So, he has beaten the Zips. I think Toledo is going to be a tough out and with Akron's unfocused, inconsistent and soft play it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if the Rockets win tonight. Hopefully the Zips can show some real toughness and realize that they can still have at least a somewhat respectable season if they can just pick up the intensity for 40 minutes and show that they are a focused and prepared team. "Team" being the operative word. I really can't make a prediction on tonight's score so I'm just gonna pray that somehow we have more points than they do when the final buzzer sounds.
  13. NCAA Tournament wins by Non-AQ Conference teams last year alone (excluding Butler): Xavier (A-10), Murray State (OVC), Northern Iowa (MVC), Ohio (MAC), Cornell (IVY), Gonzaga (WCC), St. Mary's (WCC), Brigham Young (Mountain West), New Mexico (Mountain West), Old Dominion (CAA). The Tournament last year was as good and exciting as its ever been and should be even better with the slight expansion this year. So, the commentator you heard either has no idea what he is talking about, or you might have just missed some of what he was saying.
  14. Zips fans might remember this guy from the 2005 MAC Championship. Go Bears!
  15. I'm hoping Missouri Valley Conference... Missouri State would be GREAT. That's just a pipe dream, but it would be really awesome to get a nice opponent like that into the JAR and give the Zips a final shot at a good win this season. Well, if the Zips can get on a tear we might have a shot at someone somewhat decent, Vermont or Iona maybe? Well, wins against higher ranked Miami and Ball State would give our rpi some needed elevation as things stand currently...
  16. That's a really good idea BirdZip. It would be far more interesting than their usual live footage of some unsuspecting fan picking her nose and not realizing she's on camera for the entirety of a timeout. Also, it might help to give less knowledgeable or new fans of Zips Basketball a sense of the winning tradition this program has built, as evidenced by the success of Zips Basketball Alumni. Even if there were some issue with replaying their professional footage they could replay some memorable moments from their college career and post their professional stats with a photo. Not to get too off topic, but just to throw another idea out there, what about some type of "This moment in Akron history" clip? I think that would help to elevate the energy from the audience in the JAR, especially if they mix the video with a recording of one of French's frantic and emotional radio calls from the specific moment.
  17. Wow, I'm not entirely sure where to start here. Great to get a win against the other best team in the league or most formidable opponent in the MAC, whatever one might prefer. We are now the team that has that X Factor, Game Changer, or MR. Marshall as he should now be referred to by Can't State and all fans. HUGE games by the aforementioned Mr. Marshall in a double double with 20 pts. and 11 boards, as well as 3 blocks, 2 assists and 1 steal and Mr. Brett Mcknight with 19 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists. Brett came out very fired up early and Zeke did whatever it took late in the game. It was just great to see the senior class get a win against those goons in their last home game against Can't State. I also have to give an applause to the fans tonight. This is the atmosphere that Coach Dambrot's teams deserve. I know the JAR is capable of getting VERY loud, but that was probably just about as loud as I've ever heard it. (My close second would be Linhart's last second tip in to beat OU a few years back (against bubba), although there were far more people there tonight.) I brought some friends and family members with me to the game tonight, two of them were my younger cousins who are in high school and at that age where they are looking at colleges and they had a fantastic time and "Witnessed" (no Zips promo pun intended there ) what an amazing college basketball atmosphere really is. They were very stoked about the game and want to come back and see more. There should be no complaints from fans tonight. Great win. Oh! and the biggest factor tonight (in my view) was that even though we were very cold from behind the arc, especially in the second half, we still got the win, which shows that this team really is very physical and versatile up front and ready for league play. Can't State didn't really have an answer for our front court with 3 blocks from Mr. Marshall, 1 from Cvetinovic and 1 from Bardo. Not to mention that Greene was virtually a non factor on the verge of fouling out tonight. Oops, I almost forgot, SUCK IT KE.NT!
  18. Every time I hear the name Bo Boroski I cringe. Also, I'm sorry you had some idiot fans sitting in front of you Dave, I wish I were in your group too, I'd give those people a lesson in what it is to be a fan. I also find it a little bizarre that a father was there with his son and his son cussed out two adults sitting behind him and then the father gave you all a dirty look. If my father witnessed me cussing out any adult as a young man I'd have had my head spun right out of the place (apparently fathers were less accepting of their children's vulgarities in the 90's). As long as you guys weren't being profane around children I don't see the problem. Heck, I've been in the GA area when it was crowded and have been given dirty looks by people in front of me for clapping loudly. A person in front of me actually moved a seat further down from me for that once. Just like you guys, I'm not going to apologize for cheering for my team. If you want to sit amongst others in complete silence, a library is a far more appropriate place than a basketball game. GO ZIPS! (Hopefully typing in all caps isn't too abrasive for some )
  19. It's already open in Wadsworth, has been for a month or two. Can't say i'd even put Chipotle in my top 25 places to eat fast food though (Pita Pit is #1). Chipotle is overpriced and though it's good, it's not THAT good like some people seem to thinkl. Pita Pit is both Delicious and Awesome. If Chipotle helps bring people to the city for lunch hour, then I'm all for it, as long as the city doesn't become overrun with national chains. I love places like Luigi's and Swensons and would much prefer to support local businesses and entrepreneurs and help to foster local economic growth and identity. After all, it is such local institutions that help to give Akron its unique character and identity, not building a new Chipotle or Wendy's or Walmart identical to any crappy generic suburb throughout the country. I do like what the developer of (the old kaiser building i believe?) did with preserving the building and adapting it to suit the needs of contemporary businesses (I believe that is the building Pita Pit is located in) I think that is a great way to contribute to the revitalization of "old Akron" and still maintain and respect much of its history and identity.
  20. I'd just take the entire team and walk out in protest. This is disgusting.
  21. I'm at a loss for words right now... Have these guys ever officiated a basketball game before? Or are they the referees from last night's MAACO Bowl?
  22. Reggie Johnson's fat @ss broke the basket. Wow. Shouldn't that be a technical on them for hanging on the rim?
  23. You are certainly in the minority there. 1) LeBron is NOT honorary alumi 2) Akron Zips was trending on Twitter BEFORE LeBron's tweet...it's not like we were lacking national attention 3) LeBron doesn't give a shit about Akron...don't be fooled LeBron put out a tweet about something positive that UA did. That's really cool. I'm celebrating something our school achieved, something to be dead proud of, and you're whining about the fact that cleveland used to have a basketball team? Take your sour grapes somewhere else my friend. I'm celebrating AKRON SOCCER! LeBron is celebrating too, and I think that is expletive great. Oh, and I'm not in the minority, Akronites support one another, we have a really great community here, it's that kind of "at home" feeling that you don't find in many urban areas, and I love Akron because it is a place that is tolerant and accepting of all people. And rooting for our own with that kind of unabashed mid-western pride that you can't find anywhere else is a very unique and rare thing. It's unfortunate that cleveland's sour grapes about the cavaliers last chance at a national championship are getting in the way of some when Akron's Men's Soccer just brought a National Championship home. If you want to go worship Danny 'Subprime' Gilbert' somewhere else, be my guest. AKRON SOCCER RULES, AKRON SOCCER IS KING! I'm glad LeBron put a tweet out about it, our soccer team is F***ing AWESOME! If you have sour grapes about LeBron's former basketball team, please email them to Danny subrpime gilbert, UAZip0510. Akron soccer probably doesn't care that you're mad danny gilbert's team can't win anymore without LeBron James. I'm done with this. GO ZIPS! GO ZIPS SOCCER! In the spirit of this post UAZip0510, let's just celebrate something amazing that our team did and leave it at that. Lets just support Akron! Hail Akron! I love my city and the people of my city! And with that, I'm extending an olive branch here.. to any and all, lets just keep supporting all of this as best we can.
