Great, complete game by the Zips. Happy to see Stuart Holthusen and Sam Gainford both score on a night that their families (from New Zealand and England) were in attendance. Mark Hothusen was among the AK-Rowdies on the hill when Stuart scored. From his recount, he wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else! Good turnout by the Rowdies and students last night. Good job!

Hopefully the ZIps draw a decent crowd. This match up deserves it.

Totally agree. Issues are not finishing and 2 bad games for our GK. Match v DU was much better than that against UVU but our guys have to find a way to score and clean up their mistakes. Zips gave that game away last night. You can't sugar coat it.

The crowd was announced as a record for this 4-year old program. Folks were very welcoming of the few of us who traveled...Eric and Myra Shultz (Nate's parents), Stu Parry, and me. Great student support. Would love to see our AK-Rowdies get back to the number of students that UVU brought. The crowd was definitely there to support their team vs "National Powerhouse Akron". Very well done and great atmosphere. Great to see Elliott Rubio. Talked to him before the game and he made a point of coming over to talk to me the Shultzes following the match. Very nice young man. He deserves to be their starting GK. Diego Serna is not related to Dillon. I believe he was listed as from Mexico. Yes, I will be at the RSL-Rapids match tonight and travel to Denver tomorrow for the match on Monday night.

Very disappointing result to say the least. We still continue to struggle to score. Ok Sam was out, but Stuart and Ezana were in as well as Egbo. Someone needs to step up. Last night was not one of Ben's best games, and unfortunately, we needed it to be. Hopefully, we'll see better at Denver, but it's going to be tough.

https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2017/08/24/parchman-5-young-players-who-will-impact-2017-mls-playoff-race Jonathan Lewis (NYCFC) Had you been sleeping on Jonathan Lewis prior to this week, those moments are most likely dead and buried underground. Lewis was perhaps the least widely known of the Generation adidas class that splashed into the league in 2017. He’d played just a year of college ball at Akron, and while his numbers were stellar – particularly on the distributive end with 10 assists – his profile and the fact that he was added late contributed to make him a bit of a shadow. And the fact that Patrick Vieira played him 23 minutes of the first available 1,800 of the season seemed to echo those wonders. ...

Perhaps no confidence in themselves (the players that were forward) and lack of speed for the support to move up quickly. The match was frustrating..."stinker" as Jared called it.

I don't mind so much giving up the goal in the last few minutes when Loyola subbed a number of their starters back in against our subs to get the win. Perhaps the sting of giving up that goal and taking the loss will motivate some to now want to not experience that feeling again. However, I find the Zips continued lack of finishing to be troubling. A number of open shots missed and other opportunities not taken. I also don't understand the hesitation, which i saw twice in the first half, to follow through on a fast break counter attack. Twice the Zips were quickly moving forward with several players ahead of their defenders but then held up to allow more of our players to move up field, allowing the defenders to get up field as well. Is there an issue with driving to the goal with less than an optimal number of attacking players? Sure seemed to pay off for Diego Valeri and Darren Mattocks last night.

Great find johnnyzip84. Great story about Evan, and this stood out to me, too... Then there’s Bush’s other family, the Akron soccer version. Numerous former UA players and coaches, including current U.S. Men’s National Team star Darlginton Nagbe, former head coach Caleb Porter and numerous others, have played or coached in MLS in recent years and according to Bush, the closeness of ex-Zips is known around the league. “The guys I went to school with, we have a great bond. In a lot of the circles in MLS, they talk about how tight the Akron guys are,” Bush said. “It was a running joke that it’s almost a cult for a few years. Many members of the group stay in touch and when Montreal played Portland, Bush met former teammate and current Portland assistant coach Pablo Moreira and Porter for dinner and also met up with Nagbe. It’s all part of a long and wandering journey that has stretched across years and miles and led the Cleveland native where he wants to be, tending goal for an MLS team and supporting his family playing the sport he loves. Larry Caldwell commented to me once that all of his kids played NCAA soccer, but none of them had the "family" experience that Scotty had at Akron. He felt that our team and our fans had the closest relationship to each other that he had ever experienced.

Declan was there but not dressed for the match.

Starters and I love the new banners...

Braden Petno is on crutches and not available this season. Marcel was there; I saw both Marcel and Skye.

Yeah, ankle again for Stu, but I don't think it's very serious. We'll see if he gets any minutes on Saturday. I don't recall Skye or Marcel either and Watters didn't appear to be dressed for the match.

I liked what I saw today. Well worth burning a day of leave to be there. Joao Moutinho fits right into the Zips' backline. Starters were: Ben Lundt, Niko De Vera, Joao Moutinho, Shane Wiedt, Nate Shultz, Nick Hinds, Pau Belana, Morgan Hackworth, Manel Cordeiro, David Egbo, and Sam Gainford. Possession in the 1st half seemed 90% - 10% Zips (probably 80 - 20 but seemed to be almost all Akron). Sam Gainford scored the lone goal about 23 minutes or so in. Completely subbed out the first team in the 2nd half. It seemed to take about 20 minutes to get going in that 2nd half. No scoring, but the Zips threatened a number of times. Final 1-0. Looking forward to Saturday.
