O jogo bonito [The Beautiful Game]: Brazilian-born Victor Souto’s story of futebol — and soccer ...Souto decided to attend Akron because he wanted to go to a good school in the U.S. with strong academics and an excellent football program, both of which the University of Akron has. Souto met Jared Embick, the head coach of the Akron Zips men’s soccer program, when Souto attended a showcase in Florida in 2012. Embick offered Souto a full scholarship to Akron, a day Souto considers to be one of the “best days of my life". However, moving from south of the equator wasn’t easy. There were times when he struggled. He didn’t know any English when he went to school, but he “liked the way the language sounded.”... ...Souto only looks at his time at Akron with positivity and gratefulness. ... Whatever happened, I hope our coaching staff realizes how proud they should be of the difference they made in Victor's life and the path that they helped to set him on. Whatever the issue, he graduated Summa Cum Laude and has been working to do things right. Best wishes to him.

It doesn't scare me as long as we have a competent Athletic Director at the time. If we had to rely on the previous AD (or equivalent), Dan Hipsher and Coleman Crawford would look like excellent choices far and above the one he would make.

Pau and Ezana scored. 2-1 Zips over ND final. As I recall (correct me if necessary): Starters (4-4-2 or 4-3-3; Skye may have been up front) Nick Costa Nate Shultz, Shane Wiedt, Reggie Laryea, Nico DeVera, Jackson Crawford, Marcel Zajac, Pau Belana, Skye Harter, Sam Gainford, Stuart Holthusen Reggie went down and Morgan Hackworth replaced him during 1st half 0-0 at half Pau scored shortly into the 2nd half Ezana Kahsay came in for Jackson Crawford several minutes into the 2nd half ND tied it EZ scored 2-1 Zips final There was no clock since we were on the practice field and I didn't look at my watch to estimate when the scores occurred. -

Zips at Texas-Arlington — NIT Round 2 (Mon 8 pm)
Zip_ME87 replied to Dr Z's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I think it's roughly a 4-hour drive, but I'm hoping some of the Houston players' families can make the trip to Arlington. If work wasn't so crazy for me right now, I might have looked into going. CLE-DFW on American is a relatively easy trip. Probably expensive at last minute, though. -

Bad news for Team USA and Newcastle United FC... http://www.shieldsgazette.com/sport/football/newcastle-united/newcastle-lose-defender-for-five-weeks-1-8441100 ...USA head coach Bruce Arena said: “DeAndre has been in LA this past week and examined by our team doctors. “We realise he is not going to be able to go to these next two matches against Honduras and Panama. “It is likely he will be out for about five weeks. I would expect he will be back on the field for Newcastle right at the end of this season in April.” ... -

Congrats to Wil Trapp! Crew SC signs captain Wil Trapp to multi-year extension ...“We are thrilled to announce that Wil has committed to remain in Columbus with a new multi-year contract extension. He is one of the leaders of our club, a model professional and an important part of our community,” said Sporting Director and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter. "He was raised in Gahanna, he is a product of the Crew SC Academy, he played at the University of Akron, he represented our country at the international level and now he is the captain of Columbus Crew SC. Wil has illuminated a path for any young players in Ohio who are hungry for success in this sport.”... ... Prior to being signed by Crew SC, Trapp made 45 appearances (all starts) for the University of Akron over the course of two seasons (2011, 2012). He twice earned All-Mid-American Conference First Team honors (2011, 2012) and was the MAC Newcomer of the Year in 2011. ...

So you assume from this source that the only reason KD is not interested in USF is the ravaged roster, per some ESPN source as told through a 3rd party. You don't think any of the following might weigh into his decision... Akron native University of Akron alumnus UA Contract through 2022 (23)... I forget, but basically until retirement age Great salary v cost of living Good bonus structure Family & friends in Akron Recently bought a new house (within past year or two, I believe) Keith's LeBron connection (LeBron in Akron area, LeBron's connections now with UA, ...) Established relationships with UA Athletics Dept personnel, UA alum, donors, season ticket holders, fans .... Loads of respect and support etc. Yeah, there's a list of things that might be better elsewhere, but same as anyone would do when weighing current job v new job...what are the pros and cons and would I really be happy elsewhere? I can't answer for Keith, but I don't think a "ravaged roster" was the only reason he may have removed himself from consideration for the USF job.

Akron Zips v Kent State Golden Flashes: The MAC Championship

Akron has been to the dance in 1986, 2009, 2011, 2013. This is the first NCAA Tournament appearance for Northwestern. http://www.ncaa.com/news/basketball-men/article/2017-03-12/northwestern-joins-march-madness-party-heres-what-you-need -
As frustrated as I am with only winning 3 MACC games in 9 visits, I appreciate the comments below from Coach Dambrot last night. I appreciate his candidly accepting that it is his job to win. I hope and trust that he will continually evaluate what he and his staff are doing and can do better to increase their chances of being successful. (https://sportscripts.files.wordpress.com/2017/03/game-11-akron.pdf) I also appreciate that he cares about the "kids"; I've talked with him enough to know he does. It's good to hear (read) him reiterate. I, unfortunately haven't made the time to get to know our basketball players, but I do appreciate them and that they chose to come and play for Akron; I wish them every success on and off the court. I hope that they will find a way to get past this disappointment and compete in the NIT even though it's not what any of us wanted. Always strive to do your best, whatever life hands you. Giving up is a poor choice. ...So if it was misconstrued, but I just wish sometimes that people would just under stand that I am a good person and that I care about kids. I really don't care what anybody else thinks, but I care about kids. ... ...That's a really good question. All I can say is, look, we've been good enough to get in the championship game year after year, and sometimes the ball hasn't bounced very well for us. I know the first time they banked in a 40 footer on us with a clock malfunction, I think we lost one overtime game to Ohio, we lose at the buzzer last year to Buffalo. The league is so close that like the year we pounded Ohio, right? I don't think we were that much better than Ohio, it was just a weird game, right? They got really good players and we just played well and they didn't. So I mean it's disappointing. You get there, that's the hard part about sports, right? When you're good, then you set yourself up for disappointments. If you're no good, there are no disappointments because you're never in the championship game, right? I think the hard part about athletics is unless you're careful, the lows, the lows last a lot longer than the highs. Even for me, like I have to fight that constantly. Think about the young people. We just lost two tough championship games in a row, and ultimately when we don't win the championship game, that's on me. Like my job's to win championship games, period. It's not on our players, it's on me. So luck, not luck, make your own luck. Obviously we just didn't play well enough tonight. But it's disappointing, yeah, and I probably won't talk to my wife for about three days, which is unfair to her, but I just won't feel like talking to anybody. Maybe I'll talk to my dog, because I don't know. Like I'm sick for my guys, I just feel bad for them, and that's the disappointing thing because of our league. I love our league. It's a great league, but it's so hard because it comes down to one game every year. Unfortunately, we've been in that one game a lot. It's the way it goes.

Akron Zips v Kent State Golden Flashes: The MAC Championship
Zip_ME87 replied to NWAkron's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
"great support system" = ??? great fans? great academic advisors? ??? I remember a winning coach at Akron who used to apologize to the fans for missteps. I didn't really feel that he always needed to do that, but thinking about it, it was comforting to hear the term "fans" as opposed to support system, etc., leaving no doubt that the coach/players empathize with us as well as we with them. -
