Now Back to our Regularly Scheduled Programming...

I'll be there this morning. Since most of us have GA tickets, can those who get there earliest and in a group try to save room for additional Zips' fans so that we can try to sit together and be louder as a group? That would be awesome. -

A pointy ball field is 53 yards wide; a soccer field is at least 70 yards.yeah I played soccer my whole life, including quite a few games in football stadiums. There should be enough room on both sides of the field for the proper width. Is it possible? Yes. However, Id suspect it'd be a VERY tight fit in the corners of the field. I think that while it'd be great to do soccer on that field, soccer deserves to have its own dedicated facility. Plus, I think that having a dedicated facility for the two sports gives a "big time" feel to both programs. In the realm of FBS football, perception is everything. Having a dual purpose stadium wouldn't give us as good of a perception as we wish to attain. In soccer, natural grass is still the preferred surface. And btw, in the realm of FBS football, I'll take winning over perception any day. -

At Michigan this year, we had to sit behind a fence. Wasn't too bad, but it was along the length of the field, not behind the goal. Hopefully, the view won't be too bad, or UA can temporarily remove the fence (and not just the blue tarp) as I thought was stated on Gozips.com. -

Less than 100 tickets left...
Zip_ME87 replied to joshgozips's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
well thats great. I was forced to get a SRO ticket last night because they told me they had sold out of everything else. From Gozips.com, it doesn't sound like your SRO ticket is SRO anymore...To make room for the additional seating, the fence on the west end of the stadium will be removed temporarily and bleachers will be installed. Moreover, to help compensate for what will likely be the team's fifth record-setting crowd of the season, all four gates will be accessible to fans. Once again, the will call table will be available at 2:30 p.m.Additional Tickets... -
Yup, you aren't close to the Hipshers at all.I am so close I am Dan's shadow. Dan Hipsher paved the road that the Zips are traveling down now. He gave the Zips the credability that they carry now. Thank You Dan where ever you are right now. Rumor is that he might come back and coach the Football team to a MAC East Title. Are yout a gumshoe Quick? Conf. Conf. Year Coach Record Pct. Maybe you have Dan Hipsher confused with Bob Huggins or Keith Dambrot when talking about coaches that have actually given Zips Basketball any sort of credibility in the Division I era? Or maybe you're just in love with Dan Hipsher? Either one is fine with me, but it's obvious that Dan Hipsher doesn't hold a candle to the things that Huggins and Dambrot have done for Akron Basketball. The numbers speak for themselves.Dambrot is the beneficiary of a weak MAC, when Hipsher was there every team seemed to have NBA talent. Now it seems as if Toledo, Cent Mich, Eastern, Can't, BGSU, are all teams that are struggling to compete in the MAC. Name me 5 players to play in NBA since Dambrot came to Akron and Hipsher left Akron. While Hipsher was there Casey Shaw Toledo, Chris Kaman Cent Mich, David Webber Cent Mich, Keith Mcleoud BGSU, Shawn Stonerook Ohio, Brandon Hunter Ohio, Wally Szerbiak Miami, Derrick Dials Eastern Mich, Anthony Stacey BGSU, Trevor Huffman Can't, Antonio Gates Can't State, Earl Boykins East Mich, Antonio Daniels BGSU, John Edwards Can't State, Ira Newbel Miami, Tamar Slay Marshall, Bonzi Wells Ball St, Theron Smith Ball St.. Seems to me Hipsher was coaching aginst way better talent. I realize some are not in NBA but all played on an NBA summer team in the last 4 years.OMG, it was FIFTEEN years of crap basketball after Huggins left before KD arrived. I thought it was only 14.

Coach Porter To DC United?
Zip_ME87 replied to ksu sucks's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Ouch. I think that's all that can be said.HANDS OFF OUR "DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI!" I know it's difficult to compete with one's alma mater (especially when they are a BCS school), but this is where The University of Akron needs to step up and take care of a GREAT coach it already has. I think the students, alumni, and the community are already showing Caleb (and team) all the love we can with the ever-increasing record crowds. The Zips are drawing more fans to the 2009 NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament than any other team. I hope that anyone who can buys one of the SRO tickets behind the West Goal to increase the crowd size as much as possible. -
Channel 5 had a story on the Zips at approximately 6:15 pm tonight. Hopefully, the link below works to the video on the Newsnet5 website.Zips Men's Soccer Seeks National Title

Coach Porter To DC United?

Yes I would rather blow the money already spent on new facilities for the football program than drive away 2 successful coaches for a mere POSSIBILITY of a good head football coach. Also, I never said pay the soccer coach the same as the head football coach. If UA is going to spend lots of money on sports, then we need to appropriately compensate those already proven successful (in addition to upping the Football HC's salary). Also, instead of simply increasing base salary, how about a reasonable base salary with performance incentives, such as: $'s for winning the MAC East, $'s for getting to a bowl, $'s for winning the MAC?
-
Been there, done that. It sucks and men's basketball sucked for 14 years all the while football did nothing. Those who do not learn from history are destined to repeat it.Getting a good football HC, does not have to be done at the expense of basketball and soccer (meaning the football HC's salary cannot be double that, or more, of the basketball HC). You just don't treat the folks who are doing well for you that way.

I lived in Alabama when Terry Bowden was the HC at Auburn. He was horrible after his first year (with Pat Dye's recruits). Not only no, but HELL NO, in my opinion. I also vote to flush Zips football altogether (new stadium be damned) if this hire is another one done at the expense of basketball (like the D-IA/Faust hire) and soccer. Sorry, but I'm for putting money into the areas where we are successful before we dump much more money down the football hole. I loved seeing Domenik Hixon's catch to win the MACC and going to the Motor City bowl. But, the trip to Portland last Spring and our current trek in the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament are just as important (if not moreso).

I was wondering that as well.

Yeah, everyone thinks Dambrot's a bum. It was funny...consistent with many quotes from last season...Dambrot's post-game comments to Frenchie after beating Drake began with a slight to the fans. The general theme was - "No one remembers how many games we won over the past 6 years...everyone thinks when we start 0-2 that we stink."They guy is always complaining about lack of support...never showing much gratitude for the many loyal followers he's got.I guess it is simply a motivational thing for him. He convinces himself that everyone thinks he's a bum, and that motivates him to be his best. But it isn't true.Like t or not, we all love Keith Dambrot and want him to stay at UA for as long as he wants to be here. I hope I didn't ruin his primary motivational tool by saying that. I'm with you CK, and I've told him as much in person. No one's perfect, and he'll always be critiqued, but not only is Keith Dambrot a great basketball head coach, but he is an Akron Alumnus and fan, like all of us. I love seeing him at the other sporting events. I sat behind him during one of the men's soccer games a few weeks before the men's basketball team practices began. He was telling someone how great the soccer team is and how much fun they are to watch.

So what are you suggesting? Throw roses on the field Sunday? Have a parade on Thursday? Only problem with that is, I believe UCLA is PAC-10 champs. We might meet them in N.C.Not suggesting anything. Just pointing out again that the Zips were better against the Big Ten than the Big Ten Champions were.
-
Since the Zips are regular season "Big Ten Champs", it's only fitting to take on a Pac-10 Team. Go Zips!

I will 2nd that... ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY SOCCER ZIPS!For anyone who may not have already seen it, Elton Alexander wrote a great article on Zips' soccer. Elton's Article on Nov 19th"But Akron soccer is anything but an overnight success story, and the sport's profile is unlike any other sports program at the university. In fact, the Zips have won or shared in 12 regular-season MAC titles, including each of the past five seasons." ..."Akron soccer has been in the NCAA's top division since 1966. Not only have the Zips been competitive, they have built a reputation as being among the nation's best programs.Under six coaches since 1955, Akron has had just two losing seasons and none since 1965. That's 44 straight seasons of winning, anchored now by coach Caleb Porter."Stu Parry set the path for the program and laid the foundation the program has followed ever since," former Zips coach Ken Lolla said of Akron's first soccer coaching icon.Lolla left Akron for Louisville, where he is in his third season. He has the Cardinals in the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season."We ended up doing it differently than how Caleb has done it," Lolla said. "We did it with players that were somewhat overlooked. Caleb has done a tremendous job of bringing in some of the top players in the country."It always starts with good people, and when you look at Caleb, it starts with him -- very driven, and Stu Parry was the same. Then what you do is first sell a vision, a dream of what you expect the program to achieve. The kids come because of that belief. They believe in your dream."Akron sophomore forward Teal Bunbury, the 2009 MAC Player of the Year, said he knew about the Zips program while growing up in Minnesota. But it wasn't until Porter recruited him that he realized the place soccer holds at the school."I was looking at New Mexico and UCLA," Bunbury said, "but the thing about those schools was that soccer wasn't the biggest sport there. They have football and basketball, and those are looked at way ahead of soccer. At Akron, soccer is important."When Caleb recruited me, he made me feel like I was going to be part of a family, and when I came on my official visit, that was when I understood it was the place for me." Same old story that caused me to walk away for awhile sometime ago (after causing us to lose a great basketball coach)...Football gets the investment while soccer and basketball (women's included) are taking the right steps on the pitch and on the court. "send a check and go do something more productive with your time" ... I suggest going to Men's and Women's basketball games and PACK the Pouch for #1 Men's Soccer post-season!
