  1. DQ Johnson decommits to go to North Texas instead.
  2. From footballscoop.com: Akron: Look for East Mississippi CC quarterbacks coach A.J. Milwee to be named quarterbacks coach at Akron. Milwee, a two-time Harlon Hill finalist at North Alabama, was a grad assistant at North Alabama for two seasons under Terry Bowden. We presume Jeff Bowden will go as well and we also would think that offensive coordinator / offensive line coach Alan Arrington would go as well; but we have not confirmed this.
  3. I listened to the whole interview on my way to work this morning. It didn't bother me at all. In fact, it made me laugh. It was just three sports guys from NE Ohio talking to each other, all with about the level of Akron Zips knowledge one would expect from cleveland radio. I'll let GT slide, because the real test will come from covering basketball and spring football. It will become apparent soon enough if he is learning. I'm just happy that the Zips got a 15 minute segment on a major sports radio network during prime morning rush-hour time. It also showed the effects of this hire on the average NE Ohio sports fan. They know that the Zips have a football team, and they know that Bowden is a big name. They don't know much else, but its enough to get them talking. Get us to a bowl, coach, and you'll see the sleeping giant begin to awake. The level of support could be huge, but nobody's ever taken advantage of it.
  4. Perhaps a promised starting spot at a BCS school is enough. What other BCS team would he be able to start for? But at the same time, all the former Akron coaches at Kansas coach the offense and not the defense, so I don't know how they can make such a promise.
  5. From Footballscoop: Akron: This afternoon we spoke with sources very close to the process. After those talks, we believe that Terry Bowden is the only candidate that was technically offered the job. Then why didn't we try to hire him weeks ago? I like the end result, but how this coaching "search" was handled still bothers me.
  6. I think it will require its own topic, eventually. Once he starts bringing a staff in, definitely. For today, it's not much of an issue.
  7. If you can afford it. I love their Italian grilled-cheese sandwiches.
  8. Coach Bowden will be at two basketball games next week, after the press conference. He will be at the WBB game on Wednesday at 7:00 vs Robert Morris, and at the MBB game on Thursday against VCU. My guess is that at the WBB game he will be more accessible to your average fan because you won't have the huge crowds, while on Thursday you will see a "big announcement" kind of thing before the game or at half time.
  9. I just want to win our home games and beat Can't.
  10. I'm leery of "short quotes with high praise" coming from the college football community. He may be a great coach or a mediocre one, but there's always someone out there with some clout who will say he is a great hire.
  11. This is a happy day. Let's not darken it by bringing up the Browns.
  12. The turnarounds tell me that he's a guy who can get the most out of an underperforming group. He doesn't need to wait to get three recruiting classes of "his guys" in order to win. You figure out what your strengths and weaknesses are and adapt your playcalling to fit.
  13. Well that explains the delay. They wanted to film it. Also had to upload it to youtube (typically 30 mins for an HD video of this size).
  14. The problem is the danger of it becoming "old news". In the world of Twitter, things get old fast. The longer you wait, the less anybody continues to care. If you want your announcement to make a splash, it has to come when the frenzy is just about to peak, to drive it to new heights.
  15. failed social media experiment. If they wanted to use social media to beat everyone to the punch, theyre only about 5 hours late to the fight. Such a useless marketing department effort... I don't think they understand how social media and the internet work. I think they're waiting on a full write-up to be written before announcing. You don't need that on Twitter. Just say the coach's name and it's official. Say a write-up is coming later on gozips.com and stop delaying while things snowball out of control.
  16. Terry has a history of "reaching out" to FBS schools in need of a head coach. Until today, nobody took a flyer on him.
  17. Is it a coup to hire somebody nobody else looked at? I'm not saying it's a bad hire, just don't think you could call it a coup.
  18. New offers reported: DE Ed Glenn, Milford Academy LB Tyler Matakevich, Milford Academy JUCO WR Alonzo Agwenu commits to Arizona State
  19. I cannot support somebody who coached football at Can't State. Not now, not ever.
  20. The penalties of this show-cause are: Tressel must sit out first 5 games of the first season. Bowl ban for the first season. 5 years of sending progress reports to the NCAA. That's it. No scholarship loss. No recruiting ban. Does that really make him unemployable?
  21. http://twitter.com/#!/footballscoop/st...358262968516608 More re: Loeffler to Akron...per sources, he did not accept on the spot. Looking at NFL position coach options. Told he'll decide soon.
  22. He's a part of the Belichick coaching tree. The one that produced such football visionaries as Rob Ianello and Romeo Crennel. They all wear their playbooks down their pants.
  23. Maybe Tressel turned us down the first time because he thought the sanctions would be worse and that he wouldn't be able to win. We should at least ask him if he changed his mind now that circumstances are different.
  24. Joke or not, it makes a whole lot of sense for us to try to get him.
  25. He's just stating the obvious. The "show cause" is weak, and there's nothing in there that could possibly harm us even if we had to accept all the penalties.
