So... opting out of a trip to play a ball game in Boise, Idaho in the middle of winter against a team that has a ridiculous home record, when there are closer games that pay more, have better weather, and give your fans an opportunity to actually attend the game means that your chicken? I say it's smart.I would never accept a bowl bid where you play a team on it's home field while making absurd travel requirements for your fans, when there is something closer to home that pays out more money.Ball State should play Boise on a neutral field if they play at all.

You're completely forgetting our best walk-on player. There isn't any other player on the roster that I want with the ball in his hands with the game on the line than Darryl Roberts. He is the definition of clutch.

I can't find any other board. That's very strange that there isn't a free-to-read message board anywhere, or that their rivals one is so slow.

If there's anyone that has put a curse on the Zips, it's the fans.

Akron vs. Niagara University (of Canada)
ZachTheZip replied to GoZips88's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Listening to it at the Women's game vs. CSUIt's good that we have the lead at half, considering how we are the decided underdogs in this game. Find an answer for that one guy with half their points, and the Zips could blow this thing open. -
Apparently a few union guys are always there protesting the use of non-union labor, so that's nothing out of the ordinary.Their signs said that they are part of the Bricklayer's Union. It's just odd that they were there today and we see almost no activity at the construction site.If it was a strike, I would be mad if I was working there and the union decided that I didn't need to get paid right before Christmas.

please... no... no strike

ABJ Article - Good Stuff!
ZachTheZip replied to Johnny Utah's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
I'm not pointing the finger at OSU. I said I don't think they did anything. I do think that a person who has previously shown to be willing to sell out Akron to a Big Ten school is likely responsible for this mess. -
ABJ Article - Good Stuff!
ZachTheZip replied to Johnny Utah's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
OSU and NW are in the same conference. OSU was pissed that they had to play here, and wait an extra day because of the weather (almost identical scenario to the WVU game a few years ago). OSU lobbied the Big Ten to do whatever they could to punish us for having the insolence to beat them at a high school field. Big Ten whispers into somebody's ear at the NCAA, who then changes the game site prematurely while conveniently taking off a few days for Thanksgiving. Sound far-fetched? Some people have the idea that this is what happened. I don't think that was it at all.I say this was an inside job by a guy with a grudge or an OSU fan that just happens to work in UA athletics. We were sold out on the trip to OSU at the end of the season. Somebody warned them that we were bringing busloads of fans, because that somebody severely dislikes either the fact that we have better fan support or dislikes somebody who is in charge of creating fan support. Well, we won despite that. Then it happens again - UA plays OSU, this time at home, and we make them look bad on the field and in the stands. This somebody is even angrier, and decides to screw over Akron, so he makes a call. Then the NCAA is more than happy to move the game to Chicago under the pretense of "player safety".Whoever it was that works at UA and decided that our field would be unplayable four days in advance, without consulting Mack Rhoades or Caleb Porter who were both conveniently located off campus at SVSM at the time, needs to be fired. -
http://www.ohio.com/sports/zips/35375204.htmlA very good article about what happened this season. Also, a quick look to what needs to be done for the future:
-
Don't bet on it being knocked down soon. They're staying in business until March 1st.They're moving to Brown and Wheeler, which is adjacent to Buchtel Field.

Ronnie Steward to be out for month
ZachTheZip replied to RootforRoo44's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Ouch. Get well soon, Ronnie.I guess it's time for Humpty to step up. We'll be seeing more of McNeese and D. Rob as emergency back-up PGs like last year. -
JD Critiques, the 3-3-5, Recruiting etc.
ZachTheZip replied to InTheZone's topic in Akron Zips Football
He better be gone with anything less than 7-5 next year.7-5 gets other coaches canned. Here at UA it is required to save your job.I am not picking on you, as you are correct. That is the problem here.We consider mediocrity as being a winner.Mediocrity is a step above where we are currently at as a program. -
If we were to fire JD, our options would come down to an unproven coach from a lower division or one of the fired BCS coaches. I don't like those choices, especially given the number of teams competing for head coaches this winter.Tennessee hired former Oakland Raiders coach Lane Kiffin to be their new HC. Not sure how that will work out for them

I think whats stands out more about that statement is that we brought 3 buses of students to OSU when they had to entice students to come to a home soccer game. So much for the Big10 having a dedicated fanbase. I cannot wait to see the look on people's eyes at Northwestern when we have 2 (maybe even 3) buses of fans/students show up and take over their stadium. This is going to be a ton of funWord is, there will be three buses. 1 for fans, 2 for students.
-
This isn't the first time we've been betrayed by somebody who works in facilities. When we took three busses of Rowdies down to Columbus someone called ahead to warn OSU, which allowed them to attempt to organize a fan section. Luckily that one backfired when less than ten of their students showed up. This time, it's a much more serious transgression.
-
Let's hope fate has a sense of irony.
-
Students don't have to pay.The NCAA prohibits noisemakers in tournament games, but we were allowed to have flags and signs. I don't know about standing behind the goal, because it depends on te design of the stadium. We couldn't do it at SVSM because of the design.I am hoping that since it is an "Akron home game", they don't ban flags and signs which the Big Ten is sometimes wont to do. Indiana allowed noisemakers and signs, but OSU did not.

I can't find if there will be any video, but you can always listen to the radio broadcast over the internet.http://www.sportsradio1350.com Click "Listen live"

In between the Football team's frustrating collapse and the Soccer team being forced to give up home field advantage, it's easy to forget that it's basketball season.Akron takes on EKU tonight in the third game of the Legends Classic. I don't know much about EKU, but I think it's safe to assume that they will put up more of a fight than Urbana, but they should also be more beatable than Pitt. This team continues to progress at an incredible rate. They should win the final two games in the Legends Classic.
-
He SHOULD be fired, but he won't. The most important season in UA history is next year, and I can only hope he doesn't screw it up.
-
This game can be blamed on two things: Jacq, and whoever made the decision to play him. You simply can't put a guy that is already prone to make bad decisions out there when he has a condition that would make it even worse.
-
A few things need to fall our way for this to work, but I have a funny feeling that the Zips will be playing another game if they beat Temple. You can't call yourself a Zips fan if you can't get excited about going bowling. We've only been to one bowl game in D-1 history, and some people wouldn't care if we get the chance to do it again?
-
A good chunk of the bowl picture will be decided today with these five games. Let's hope we come out on the good end of it all.

Very nice confidence-builder from ESPN. However, few seem to realize that Northwestern is the Big-11's best 11 (hold on -- there are only about 7 men's soccer programs in the league!). I hope we can at least make it to penalty kicks. I have great confidence in our shooters, AND our keeper. We're still the home team, BTW. As long as the Zips don't have to face the Little 11's best 11 PLUS one, I like our chances. But who isn't leary about the officiating after what's already occured. Like many others have said, I fear UA will have little margin for error and be forced to dominate play for any chance to win. At least this team is capable of such a performance. The Zips need every advantage they can get. Outnumbering their fans at their home field would be a good start.
