  1. They're no where near as bad as back in the 1970's and They claimed attendance was 45k to 49K for the old Acme Zip Games. I know bowl was full for those games and people were even sitting on the hill atop the Bowl. But, you can't get 45k to 49K into a stadium who's official capacity is 35,000.Stadium capacity was listed at 31,000 not 35,000. I do not recall anyone ever claiming that attendance for an Acme Zip game was 45 to 49K but I was there when they had over 40,000 and it was fun.The original official capacity of the Rubber Bowl 35,202 before they closed part of the seats in the endzone and built the A-men club under the pressbox. UofA had person who happened to have graduated from my HS who worked in AD who was always grossly over estimating crowds back in the early late 1960's and early 1970's Yes, he sure did estimate several of the Acme-Zip crowds at 45k to 49k back then. His Nickname was Red. I don't recall his real name at this time and only recall his nickname and firery but, great attitude (But, I'm going to get it and post it here) The ABJ said it was closer to 40K all of those times. Here's one of the many places that will confirm the original capacityhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubber_BowlLocation Akron, Ohio Broke ground 1939 Opened 1940 Capacity 35,202 You're probably thinking of Red Cochrane, former player and coach, and longtime supporter of athletics. (I was going to say athletics supporter but thought better of it.)That's him. He was the one always over estimating crowds at the Rubber Bowl and even would say there close to 5,000 for some the big gams played in Memorial Hall back then.
  2. Many college campuses are dead on non sports weekends as many kids go home. Many major schools when kids are out tend to have some empty seats for an otherwise sold out game, because students are not there do to breaks. UofA does not have the corner on being dead onthe weekends.
  3. I agree Even during bad years teams like Ohio U and Bowling Green draw well for home games because of the on-campus experience you get for MAC games and rivarly games. During the competitive years you'll get sellouts. The Bowling Green-NIU ESPN Saturday game of just a few short years ago more then drives home what a home game on your campus can do for you even in the MAC. I have no doubts UofA can rise to and above that level in the coming years once the stadium opens on campus. can't really compare Athens and Bowling Green Ohio to Akron...smaller towns and the schools are THE item...not much else to do not so here...never has been that connection with U of A and the community that there should have been..at least not yet..Toledo is the same way on college football weekends as Athens and Bowling Green and Toledo is much bigger city then Akron.

  7. I believe it all depends on the product on the field. If, UA is competitive. I fully expect them to average 18K or better for most games and sellouts for games vs Can't St.Just having a stadium on campus will bring additional 4k to 5k in my opinion. Make title runs and I expect them to draw very well.
  8. They Built Cleveland Stadium in 18 months. This is not close to size of that Stadium. Trust me, anyone with any doubts will be gone at what this site will look like in next 90 to 100 days. You still don't even have the near the full crew of workers on site that will be there down the road and look at what they've done in a little over 3 months. They won't let crews who can't work stand around and draw a paycheck. Once much of the grading and dirt removal is done and they can really get serious with foundation and structure work. That's when you'll see the place really take shape. They have more then enough time to get it ready before Sept 19, 2009 Sounds like a vacation day is in order in June or July ... pack up a cooler, grab a folding chair and a bottle of sunscreen and plant myself somewhere on the perimeter where I can enjoy watching it all happen. The whiners and complainers lurking out there fatigue me ... this is a good thing for the U of A and for the City of Akron. Go Zips!!!This is great for the UofA and the City of Akron. I can't wait until I come to visit this Summer and I'll be able to go down and see for myself in person and not just Stadium Cams. My nephew who lives nearby keeps me updated and tells me the Cams don't do the site any true justice. He says I need to see it in person to realise how far they've come in just 3 months and 1 week worth of actual work since they tore the dorms and 1st houses they owned at time down. The Biggest whiner Manny could have brought him a new place and be setting up shop rather then paying his attorneys monies and coming out with pretty much the same deal. (He in for a shock when he sees how jury trials go on eminent domain cases) He'd make back any short fall in rather quickly if his new place has at least has bathroom doors unlike the dump Manny's Pub he claims that such a part of UofA.

  10. They have to build a base for 120 foot Tower that will be on the home side. That why they're starting it the way they doing it. Steel will start to go up for the tower anywhere from Mid June to early July. I'm expecting this to really start to look like a stadium under construction in the next couple of months.
  11. That's what you're seeing alright. If you look closely. You'll see that lower part of the grand stand at field level is starting to take shape.
  12. They've dug it up and removed it. I watched them while they were doing it. That part of Nash in the cams is history. They also have put a fence up around much of the project.I wonder if they'll find all of the Western Cult Final Exams with all the right answers that I buried there in 1980...? :DI bet it would have been interesting to see some of things they dug up. They're building a major interchange in Metro Atlanta on I-85 and Hwy 316. They uncovered tons and tons of buried tires buried in one of the hillsides they had to remove for one of the lanes.
  13. The plasma center doesn't use the "donated" blood for medical purposes... they use it to make shampoo. They've done undercover news stories on some of plasma centers here in the South. Many of them are selling blood to other countries as well as running shoddy operations. Not all of them are bad. But, many of them are and I didn't need that little smart comment. Thanks for the assist.
  14. Name the night. I hate that place.I'd drive up from Georgia with gas running as high as it is now just to help out and I know how to drive heavy equipment. The plasma center is a major blight in the area. I understand the need for blood. I don't understand the plasma center. you would if you needed it to save YOUR life...I understand the Red Cross and the blood drives they do at my place of business and my church. Or you could go to your local hospital and donate blood. I don't understand places like the plasma center that set up shop in certain areas and buys blood from junkies and the like.
  15. Odd Corner building still has to come down where the front gate and shops for the Stadium will be. UofA just took possession of that building recently. It will more then likely take about month to prep that building so it can be torn down. It's not blocking any major part of the stadium footprint just the front gate area.
  16. Those last two houses in Cam 2 on what used to be Nash St. Are coming down.

  19. Unless they approve OT, by time they were through knocking down the 3rd house. It was after 4pm and that's when they're usually done for the day. I believe the other two will be coming down tomorrow. They started from the other direction when they started tearing them down today. The three houses they tore down today. Were the three houses were the asbestos trailer stayed beside for weeks. Those first two houses have been prepped for sometime. No asbestos trailer was ever pulled up to either one of them. They ripped the siding down weeks ago and have carried out the fixtures for quite sometime. I'm also looking forward to seeing a clear shot. It's seems like they've spents months prepping these five house to be torn down. They took possession of all of them back early this year not long after the dorms came down and I thought they'd been gone long before now.I have to admit. I love seeing them tear the buildings down. I tuned in as they took down the apartment building that was next to the dorms a few weeks back. I tuned in today just as they started knocking down the first of the three houses they tore down today. I'm looking forward to seeing the other two houses go ASAP.
  20. I knew that what they were doing behind the Odd corner. (Construction wise) I was just glad to see they're working right up to that property before they take possession next week. That keeps the entire Stadium project moving right along since that area is the front gate area.
  21. They're finally starting to tear down those houses on Nash St in Cam 2. I've been waiting for some more mass destruction.
  22. I hear what you're saying. But, you have too look it case by case and this case we're not talking a guy who been 200 years. We're talking business making monies putting as little as possible back into the business. Manny Pub is sorely in need of renovations. The Sun Grill was bad looking back in the early 1980's My nephem tells me it hasn't changed all that much over the years, which tell me it another candidate for eminent domain. The uses of eminent domain are what you just said. A good usage is rustbelt cities in bad shape. But, I would take issues if APS wanted to use eminent domain to take Perkins Mansion, John Brown House or Stan Hywet Hall for new school. That would be an abuse of eminent domain. Not taking the bars and businesses on the old Zip strip while offering the owners mega dollars for their dumps.
  23. One of the many reasons as a former resident of Akron. I'm always firing off letters to them about there so called coverage. First the Jackson coverage (I still have serious doubts about what he claiming) and now Manny. It's like the ABJ rather be negative as possible about Akron
  24. I have no issue with eminent domain, if used the way it was intended. The Supreme Court has ruled you can't use eninent domain to take property for private development such as retail or commerical. The stadium and the dorms are public development and eminent domain can be used. UofA has been more then generous on all the offers and in my opinion no one including Jackson or the Nemer have a gripe given they're all getting far more then their dump of properties are worth. The so called march for Manny yesterday shows how much his business has fallen and IMO, UofA if giving him more lost business revenues then he'd make at the rate he's currently going for his dump Manny Pub. The chopstix and aroma as well. We're talking UofA area and downtown Akron. If, Jackson can set up shot for less then half a million across the street. Then Manny sure can get his busines going for 1.05 mil in the area as well. I don't see an issue with the way eminent domain has been used in this case.
  25. Part of Nash St is gone. They spent the better part of the day tearing it up and hauling it away. They also pulled the plywood off the one house they've been cleaning asbestos out of for weeks now. It's just a matter of time before wrecker finally gets those houses now. They also working on the area right behind the old Odd corner location. UofA officially takes over that property on April 29th. It should be gone early to mid June looking at how long it's taken to knock down the other structures they own. They really appear to take special care in prepping these buildings (Asbestos issues) to be torn down.
