  1. I think part of it is that the offense looked so much better under Dalton Williams. Dalton made his decisions quicker than Pohl.
Agreed, that it is a decision making issue. I disagree with you about when. Dalton was able to go through progressions, Kyle doesn't often do that. He often makes his decision before the snap of the ball. A couple throws that fans are blaming on the receivers dropping Saturday (and other Saturdays) shouldn't have been thrown. A QB needs to give his players the best chance to move the sticks. Throwing into tight coverage is not usually the best option. If everybody is covered, I understand, but often, that's not the case. 3rd downs and 4th quarter completion percentage separate the boys from the men. I love Kyle's accuracy on the go patterns, but the crossing stuff in middle of the field seems to present a challenge. This may be all due to the comfort level of running the offense too, remember DW ran this offense before he arrived at Akron. Whatever the issue is, I hope it improves, I would LOVE to head into the offseason with a three game win streak! That would also be the last four out of five (even though it's crummy competition)!?!?
  2. I'll share a beer experience I had last night. Went to the Derek Hess show last night, my wife wanted to stop and get chocolate at Lily's since it was close. Much to my surprise, Lily's has a very nice singles beer selection. Picked up a couple Bell's I haven't tried and Fat Head and Southern Tier Xmas beers. Who knew? Those are my "tailgate" beers today.

For Browns fans, this would be a cool xmas gift. Reasonably priced if your a fan of Hess IMO.

  3. I'd say it's a pretty big night on campus. Soccer game, volleyball game, and Massillon/Highland at the football stadium. Everyone that can should really attend something tonight.
Out of the three, the volleyball game interests me the most. I got a chance to play a couple games with a few of the girls at the end of last season. Disappointing to see they have a losing record. Hopefully they can put it together for the tournament. Good luck to them!

Here is the preview for tonight.

  4. The NFL was made great partly through easy schedules for bad teams and difficult schedules for good teams based upon previous season results. The mac should take previous seasons results in schedule design.
    Explaination of the NFL scheduling.

    - Six games in division (two against each opponent)

    - Four games against another division in conference (on a three-year rotation)

    - Four games against a division out of conference (on a four-year rotation)

    - Two games against the other teams who had the corresponding divisional finish in conference (these are the "parity" games)

  5. @The Hip Zip, you make a good point. A complaint in the past about Coach Dambrot is that he tries to teach too many plays. The reality is that the Zips try to set up a number of different plays on each possession, but break them off when the defense counters. It may look like helter skelter to fans who haven't watched the Zips learning and practicing all the different plays. But they're searching for the play that takes advantage of what the defense is least prepared for. Sometimes they run out of time and have to jack up a quick one. When I watch other teams play I see this happen several times in every game, so it's not just the Zips. I think this will improve as the season goes on and all the players become more comfortable with their roles and understand what their teammates are going to be doing.
Here is the explanation I recieved from the staff back in Feb 2010 on what type of offense KD likes to run

Coach Dambrot runs a combination of different offenses. First he runs a fast break similar to NC which tries to get the ball inside. From there on ball reversal we screen down and the get into baseline runner, with our 4/5 men on blocks and a player running off their screens. If the backside post helps we flush hi for a hi/lo look. We can sprint into on ball screens and either pick and pop or pick and roll. We run a lot of quick hitters always looking to get the ball inside and then play out of the post. Depending on what the defense does will determine which cut we run. We have set plays to isolate individuals in the post, sets designed to shoot the 3 and sets designed to drive the ball. We can run a set that is motion offense, we can spread the floor and use the ball screen to create total defensive rotations. We run a lot of different things to utilize our personnel. Hope this gives you a quick overview of our offense.

PS Why are Zip fans always debating who plays the point? Remember the great AA vs McNees debate in 2011? :D Zipgal killed it that year.

  6. The NCAA tournament is great, but a lot of it rides on getting lucky with matchups and having a few hot shooters.
Wow. Glad your not marketing March Madness (one of, if not the, biggest sporting event) this year.

World Series are great, but it rides on lucky bounces of the ball, and a few hot hitters.

    Think bigger.

  7. For those saying we always choke on TV, um, we've done ok in bracketbuster games, won a few MAC championships, have beat some pretty good Can't and OU teams..... let's not get carried away. Also, nationally televised games mean we're playing a pretty good team, so no shame in losing those really. Let's be happy we get prime-time games, plenty of other MAC teams would like to have that problem.
Even the coach is sick of it....Dambrot said. "But I decided before the game I was going to use my older big guys. to make sure we got a win, because (in the past) we've lost so many games early in the season, and I was getting sick of it." source

This will be one of the games at the end of the season we....(you know the drill by now).

On top of it, Ken+ upsets Temple. Zip fans get frustrated.

  8. Remember when the Zips football team almost beat Michigan? Everyone said we would feast on the MAC after that. ZipsNation.org, The unofficial web home of overly optimistic Akron Zips fans.
Here is the Michigan thread. Most were happy that we played well, and upset about the final no hold call on D'Orazio. I don't see "everybody" predicting a feast in the MAC??? History would prove why Zips fans would predict feasting on a MAC basketball schedule. Football, not so much. Many members on ZN are realistic, there are a handful of fans that see a lot through blue and gold glasses. It's up to the reader of ZN to figure out who is who, and what you enjoy to read. Have fun.
  9. Following a couple of hours more sleep after the game, I woke up thinking how much the Zips miss Zeke in the middle after relying on him for four seasons. The Gaels scored lots of easy points in the paint that would not have happened on Zeke's watch.
If they had Jimmal Ball, we win by 5. If a frog had wings...

PS Zeke would have fouled out (no fault of his own) in that game since he would have been left isolated on so many Gaels that broke the press.

  10. Big Dog is definitely the bright spot of the night for the Zips. If he can play this well in his first game as a true freshman against a team like Saint Mary's, he should be able to feast on the MAC.
I thought the exact same thing about Cvetinovic when they played Pitt in 08. I love the name "old school" for IJ23. Fits his game.

I agree with everybody about Tree. Love his effort. I'll take 5 of him on any sports team I play on.

We need to learn how to finish around the rim...still. (tired of typing that)

We expel SO much energy on defense, and very little on offense...still. (tired of typing that)

OC underdog giving up the points with KD is always money.

Disappointing game, but a long season. We need to peak after blowing through the cupcakes again. Like KD says...I'm tired of losing early in the season.

On the positive side, it was fun waking up at 6 am and watching the Zips with my coffee. And the announcers weren't annoying (comparatively speaking).
