  1. Swearing can be a sign of a lack of education. Ohio is a pretty well educated state so I don't see that as the problem.Over the past couple of weeks I'm sure a lot of you have seen one of the main signs of vulgar discourse that for whatever reason, everyone has to look at year around now. Regardless of what fans think about one school or another, it is a vulgarity to walk around with a shirt that says "F Michigan" or the opposite for those from Michigan. Not only is this behavior accepted, it is encouraged. The people who wear those shirts think they are being a super fan. In fact, they are being vulgar boobs and forcing others to look at their vulgar stupidity. There is no place for it regardless of the circumstances and those people should be shunned, not encouraged.
Walk through the Muni lot on a Sunday morning. Thank goodness Lot 9 is the polar opposite.
  2. As long as we are in the MAC, I'll continue to say, I miss UCF and Marshall being in the MAC. UCF was the best team the Zips played this year. Storm Johnson is a load. I can see how some could argue NIU is better with Lynch, and you might be right, but I thought UCF was a better team. Would have been a better evaluation had we played them a little later in the year though. I would love to get them on future schedules. Good luck to them.
  3. Actually, MLB, NBA and NHL all have better playoff systems as a team must win a series of games over another team to prove they are better. Nobody can have a bad game and be out of the playoffs.
March Madness is the best tournament going for my entertainment value. Todays NHL playoffs are a close second. NFL playoffs used to be better, but the quality of play has reduced the the quality of games, dropping it to third for me. College football post season is a distant fourth, but is pretty meaningless due to the system in place. MLB then NBA (without LBJ in CLE, with, is a different story).
  4. Not to open up a can of worms, but that's precisely what the 3-3-5 was doing.
Please don't try to defend that defense on ZN while I'm alive. With the proper MAC recruit, that defense can't stop the run in conference, let alone in when we play bigger conferences. I can beat that defense (in the MAC) with five play calls...and some did. The only thing a will give JD credit for is the fact that, like coach Bowden, he was trying to find what he thought would work in the MAC. I liked JD, I wish he would have adapted his defensive plan while he was here. Do you know that DeAngelo Williams still sends JD a Christmas card every year?
  5. During the third and early fourth quarters of the Toledo game the Zips went into the 3-4 ( when Toledo was driving) and Frenchy mentioned that it was a taste of things to come for next year.
This would up my Zips enthusiasm. I've been watching the Steelers play the 3-4 for so long, I can help with assignments. Can we make a Zips version of 'Renegade' on the scoreboard? This would change our defensive line assignments dramatically. If they did this, it would actually surprise me a little. I would expect to see some special guests helping in spring ball. I'm going to guess they use it in special situations and not as a base defense. If you use this all the time, you have to come up with new stuff constantly, or your defense gets predictable throughout the year...example Ray Horton this year. You need intelligent linebackers and safeties. This would be a great recruiting tool to excite young defensive players. I wish coach Bowden were sitting next to me right now so I can ask him about it. I need this answer. Excellent topic for an article George.

PS my least favorite numbers to see in a row, 3, 3, and 5. :chair: (second worst idea in Zips football history)

    Some 3-4 history

JD made the comment when he was hired at Akron "I'm bringing a defense that nobody has seen in the Mac", I was so excited that we were going to play the 3-4, I never considered it wouldn't be. He went on to describe how hard it was to recruit DE in the Mac. I still haven't recovered from that comment.

A reason teams have switched to the 3-4 defense is personnel driven. You can take guys who may be too small to be a prototypical DE, but may be perfectly sized to rush the passer as 3-4 OLB. And you can grab large guys without the speed to play DE in a 4-3 and have them play 4- and 3-tech. This by and large is the driving force for why many NFL teams are moving to multiple front 3-4 schemes. It is a lot easier (and cheaper) to find guys who are too big or too slow to play DE at the professional level and move them around to fit their talents.

  6. SEC fans think their league is really good. It is really good, but not as good as they think it is and certainly way off this year. Way, way, way, way down the list of reasons why their league is good is "We are faster than Big Ten players."
I think it's between 3 and 8 on the list.

PS the MAC had as many players as the L10 did in this years first round of the NFL draft (and MAC went higher). SEC had 12 times more. A lot of teams in that league put an emphasis on speed.

  7. The whole point is that Ohio State is overrated against SEC teams. Vegas wasnt even within 3 td's of the ass beatings that were laid out. Hell, they missed the Florida spread by 5 td's!!!!
Columbus State is one of the most bet on football teams in college (along with Tex and ND), that is how the line is made, not what they think the score will be. That means they have to entice money on the other side. I'll let you read between the lines on that. CS only has six wins ATS this year, Missouri AND Auburn lead all of college football with 10. Incase Zips fans were wondering, we were same as CS, six.
  8. A few years ago now when usc played tosu, usc practiced at their school. It was totally top secret and only a handful of people knew it was going to happen because they didn't want a crowd or media. A lot of the players were goofing around before practice, which is normal. The second Pete walked on the field and blew the whistle to start practice, every single player snapped to attention and became immediately focused. There was no goofing off during practice.
Was that the same year that Pete got in a fake fight with Lendale White and they faked his suicide?
  9. There is a difference between "bragging" about the SEC and stating facts. I hate that conference as much as anyone, but they're the best. Plain and simple.
How many teams in the SEC would be favored to beat Columbus State in a bowl game?
  10. Seemed like an arrogant know it all.
That was my impression as well. On the other side of the coin, I have witnessed coach Bowden listen to advice from a random fan telling him about a kid that looked good to him playing high school. Coach Bowden pulls his position coach over and says "are we aware of this kid?" Point being, coach Bowden seems like he is always ready to listen to someone, and leaves no stone unturned. I remember when he introduced himself at the basketball game and said he was going to work harder, and longer than anybody to bring a winning team to Akron. I feel like he is living up to that promise.

  11. The need and desire to collect some cash has contributed mightly to the disjointed nature of this years schedule.
I thought marketing did a nice job with the preseason awareness. Now they have that job all over again with the lost momentum. We'll see how many butts are in the seats during our "second" season. Hopefully somebody learned a lesson from this ridiculousness.
