It's embarrassing as a fan that we (Zip's fans) have to get excited about a home town paper placing the home town team on the cover of the sports page. I can't bring myself to type on this subject.

Maybe you should link to the article instead of your blog.On Monday, September 24, Virginia Tech lost a contest that few students were aware of. Our beloved mascot the Hokie Bird lost to the University of Akron's "Zippy Kangaroo" in the Capital One Mascot Bowl.I love the Hokie Bird and the reason I'm writing this is because I'm extremely disappointed with our university's lack of support for him. There were 12 mascots playing this year in the Capital One competition, including other big universities such as University of Georgia, University of Virginia, University of California Los Angeles, and Syracuse. Each week the Hokie Bird faces a different mascot in a competition to receive the most online votes in seven days. It's a very simple process to vote and anyone with access to the Internet can do it once a day, seven days a week. This means Tech students have a chance to vote for the Hokie Bird seven times each week. There are currently 21,997 undergraduate and 6,111 graduate students here at Virginia Tech. That means that a total of 28,108 current Virginia Tech students could be voting for our adored mascot. If each of these students voted once a day, seven days a week that would make a total of 196,756 votes each week. Unfortunately, however, not every student here at Tech voted, and that's why our mascot is now 1-1 coming off an embarrassing loss last week to Zippy. In that week two loss the Hokie Bird received a total of 36,388 votes, well short of the potential support he could receive if our entire university was supporting him. When I told my friends I was really upset about our university's lack of support for our mascot, some of them said it was too much to ask of students to take the time every day and vote for our mascot in a contest that doesn't really matter. I disagree. I had a friend time how long it took me to vote and it took a total of 27 seconds. To be fair though, I'll round this number up to a solid minute since sometimes the Internet is slow. That comes to a total of seven minutes a week out of 10,080 total, or a whopping .006 percent of a student's week. I know as students our workload can be tough at times but I don't believe students can't find seven minutes a week for this. On Facebook the group "Save the Stick It In Cheer" has 9,127 members. However, the Facebook group trying to support the Hokie Bird cause has 379 members. This sends the message that a cheer is more important than our mascot who represents everything we try to be as Hokies. If 9,000 people can find the time to join this group to save a cheer, why can't they take seven minutes a week for something even more important, supporting our mascot? When I go to football games in Lane Stadium I hear 60,000 fans and students cheer as loudly as they can when they see the Hokie Bird bench press after scores. His job is to fire up the fans to inspire our sports teams to play harder and therefore be more successful. If he fights for the sports teams that we love, why can't each of us take seven minutes out of our week to fight for him? As I walk around campus, I see hundreds of students wearing shirts with his image. Saying the contest doesn't matter is totally ridiculous, too.If the Hokie Bird wins, Tech students will have bragging rights for the rest of the year and will have proof that our mascot really is the best in the country. This week is homecoming, when all around campus students are showing their pride in a great university. What better way to show that pride to the entire nation than by voting for our beloved Hokie Bird each day? Go to www.capitalonebowl.com to vote and tell all your friends to do the same. I challenge the students of this university, who refer to themselves as Hokies, to start fighting for the mascot they supposedly love so much.

Ak-Oldies might want to coordinate with a downtown place and explain your group.See if they will run specials for the Zips games. Let them know the amount of people you will be bringing during away games that are on tv.

So their kicker (Tony Ciaravino) thinks if he grows his hair like Jeff Reed, he will kick like him? This isn't Steeler's LB son is it?I think it is! There is a weird story behind it too. Meeting Greg Sr once, I understand.

University of Akron senior linebacker Brion Stokes was named the Mid-American Conference East Division Defensive Player of the Week for his effort in the Zips’ 27-20 victory over Can't State, allowing the Zips to reclaim the coveted Wagon Wheel.Stokes (Charlotte, N.C./Butler HS) registered a team-high 10 tackles, including nine solo stops. He also had a tackle for a loss and a fumble recovery. The tackle for loss came midway through the second quarter when the Golden flushes, leading 7-0, attempted a fake field goal. Stokes sniffed out the play and dropped the holder for a four-yard loss. Later in the quarter, Stokes recovered a Julian Edelman fumble on the Can't State 33. Three plays later, Akron scored to tie the game at 7-7 with 53 seconds left in the half. With senior captain John Mackey leaving the game in the first quarter with an injury, Stokes led a defensive unit that forced four turnovers (two interceptions and two fumble recoveries), had seven tackles for losses (including three sacks) and held Can't State to just 3-of-13 on third down conversions. This marks the second time Stokes has won the MAC’s weekly honor. Last year, he was tabbed for collecting four sacks in the Zips’ win over Buffalo. Akron, who leads the MAC in scoring defense and pass efficiency defense, has a player selected MAC East Defensive Player of the Week three times in four weeks this season with Reggie Corner garnering the honor in week one and Mackey being honored in week three.Stokes currently ranks second on the team in tackles with 27 and, with his eight stops behind the line of scrimmage, leads the MAC, while ranking ninth in the NCAA, in tackles for losses. Stokes also has a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a safety this season as the Zips lead the MAC and rank sixth nationally in turnover margin (+1.75).source

From Razor's blog:Bryan Williams is the starting running back. Alex Allen will back him up. Dennis Kennedy is off the depth chart at that position. I don’t know for sure, but Kennedy could be hurt. He hasn’t played at all like the back we saw last year.I am excited to see what Williams can do starting.

Here's the gist. 1. Ball State2. BG3. Akron4. Can't5. Ohio6. Buffalo7. Eastern8. Central9. Western10. Toledo11. Miami O12. N. Illinois13. TempleHere’s to you, Carlton Jackson: two weeks ago you’re fighting for playing time, now you’re hoisting the Wagon Wheel after defeating your MAC rival. Well done! On a day where more college football teams won games when getting outgained by 100 or more yards than I can ever remember, Akron got maybe the most improbable win of all. Jackson was pretty bad, completing just 7 of 20 passes for 99 yards, and the team was outgained by Can't 375-245, but the defense showed plenty of moxie, forcing turnovers on three of Can't’s last four drives to secure the win. The linebackers didn’t handle Eugene Jarvis very well, but this was a big-time performance from one of the MAC’s best D’s

MAC Week 4 Preview, News & A Major Upset Call
Dr Z replied to MACReport's topic in Akron Zips Football
Can't State (2-1, 0-0, MAC) at Akron (1-2, 0-0 MAC), Noon ETSite: Rubber BowlSeries: Akron leads 27-20-2 (Last meeting: Can't State 37, Akron 15 in 2006).Television: ESPN Regional - List of Affiliateswagon_wheel.jpgOutlook: It may not have the national recognition of the Little Brown Jug or the longevity of the Victory Bell, but the Wagon Wheel trophy will be on the line when these two cross-town rivals collide in Akron. The teams have split the last four meetings with Akron winning the past two matchups at the Rubber Bowl. The Zips opened the season with a win against Army but have dropped two straight against Big Ten foes. QB Carlton Jackson came off the bench last week and sparked a valiant comeback effort, before the Zips fell to Indiana, 41-27, throwing for 200 yards and recording three touchdowns, earning the start this week for the Zips. The Zips hope that Jackson can spark an offense that ranks last in the MAC in total offense and is averaging just 2.7 yards per rushing attempt. Zips WR Jabari Arthur however is having a solid season, and is third in the MAC, averaging 91.7 yards receiving per game. Can't State enters the contest coming off a home-opening win over Delaware State, 38-7. The flushes posses the MAC's top rushing offense, led by MAC rushing leader Eugene Jarvis and QB Julian Edelman who combined are averaging 192 yards on the ground. Can't State also leads the MAC in total defense and have been particularly stingy against the pass, allowing only 146.7 yards through the air. A victory would give Can't State its first 3-1 start since 1987. The flushes have been impressive in the early going and have to be considered early favorites for a MAC East title.Prediction: Can't State 31, Akron 26. Mac Report Online -

Can't State has not been 3-1 since 1987 ... the Zips dropped their second consecutive Big Ten road loss last week at Indiana, 41-24, although they trailed just 27-24 with seven minutes remaining ... Can't State’s Eugene Jarvis leads the MAC in rushing (380 yards) and QB Julian Edelman has added 196 rushing yards to the attack ... last week Jarvis rushed for 136 yards, his third consecutive game with 100-plus yards ... the Zips have used both Chris Jacquemain and Carlton Jackson at QB ,,, at IU, Jackson came off the bench to pass for 200 yards and two scores and rush for another 71 yards and a third TD, and that includes -39 yards on four sacks ... defensively, UA’s Andre Jones had an end zone interception at IU ... this will be this Zips first game in 2007 at the Rubber Bowl as their opener vs. Army was held at Browns Stadium.Nick’s Pick: Can't State 34 – Akron 28Line: Can't State by 3Comment: Quite possibly the best MAC game of the weekend. Two long-time rivals who are just a few miles from one another, who dislike one another and who both have rebuilt their football programs and are now playing good football. Yes, this is going to be a terrific contest that on paper should be a defensive slugfest. Considering that each team has big-play abilities, I’m going against traditional wisdom of a low scoring game and seeing a shootout. Can't has had better QB play to date so that gives the Golden flushes the upper hand. Enjoy this game people! Nick

Akron is superior to K-en't in every way.

I listened to some of the show last week. Nice job (from what I heard).I like to hear the player interviews. Looking forward to listening to the show in the lot as we continue to tailgate after the big victory this week.

I don't think I have come close to a JD coached Zips score yet, but here goes:Top MAC defenses will mean little in this one.Zips 28Can't 24Should be a good game. Home field advantage brings the wheel back where it belongs.Akron makes it 9 out of the last 11 against Can't.

No, but some of their fans lurk here though.
-
Agreed. I used to feel the same, then I met and talked with Joe, that guy REALLY bleeds Blue & Gold. I gained a lot of respect for him that day, and his "homerism" is tolerable to listen to for me now.Keep up the good work Joe

You can download the pdf here if you still don't believe (listed on page 14)Maybe somebody can get a photo of him holding up Saturday's BJ

Wonder if Charlie would have been better off getting cut last week?I wonder if they talked to Charlie before they traded him and asked if he wanted cut?
-
Only two photos I found of him from that game. Don't read too much into it.I guess if you don't want your photo taken of (you) missing tackles...don't miss.If you find photos of him making a good play in the game, this would be a great place to post them.
