Isn't the game Friday? -
Looking at the stats (source, click here) A few stats stand out: They shut down NIU's running game...66 yards rushing. They rushed the ball well....52 rushing attempts for 196 yards. I said 52 attempts! Jumped on them early and often....24-0 with 9:14 left in the third quarter. Controlled the ball...38 minutes. Efficient QB...23/33 for 186 w/ 3 TDs Looks like an waxing to me on paper.

Akron quarterback Luke Getsy completed 15-of-29 passes for 205 yards. He also threw a third-quarter touchdown pass to Merce Poindexter. He is now 3-2 in Mac play and has his team tied for first place in the east.

One thing the new AD will not have to do is hire a new FB or BB coach for the next 2+ years. They need someone that can keep the momentum going that was created (obvious statement). Zips begin looking for athletic director Search for Thomas' replacement will be national By David Lee Morgan Jr. Beacon Journal sports "writer" University of Akron president Dr. Luis Proenza said the work done by outgoing athletic director Mike Thomas has made the job more attractive for the person who succeeds him. Proenza said a national search is beginning to find a replacement for Thomas, who will continue his work in Akron until December. ``We want to identify the very best talent that's out there, wherever that might be,'' Proenza said. ``The fairest way to put it is that we hope to have someone as soon as possible. It could happen in a matter of days and sometimes it takes a little longer. I hope we can have someone by the beginning of the year.'' Last week, Thomas accepted the athletic director's position at the University of Cincinnati. He starts there on Dec. 1. ``Mike is a good person and deserves a chance to move to a larger institution,'' Proenza said. ``What he's left and the legacy he's left will make us much more attractive for other people like Mike to come here. ``Mike has taken the athletic program to a new level of excellence. He has a very good eye for coaching talent and talent that supports the athletic program. Look what's happened in football and basketball. These have been great hires.'' Proenza was referring to football coach J.D. Brookhart and men's basketball coach Keith Dambrot, two hires made by Thomas during his six years heading the department.

My thoughts exactly.

My guess is, JD is trying to motivate Getsy this week by making this statement in the media. That is all. Coaching 101.

Nobody wants to talk about our defensive problems. It is much easier (and obviously more popular) to blame the QB for our problems. Nobody wants to question Biggs' 16 rushes for 38 yards Saturday, just change the QB, that will make Biggs and the O line better. Thanks for the article, a good read. I hope they decide to attack the QB this week. He seems to be prone to ints and sacks. I'm sure we will just sit back in our "secret" defense "that the Mac has never seen before (JD quote)" and magically induce pressure.

Early line is 16 1/2. Any confident Zip fans out there that think we can win this one, you should be able to get 5:1 odds.

Feb. 25 home game against Ohio will air live on ESPN2 Good job UAM.

It was pouring and we sucked. As I heard one Akron staffer say "god bless each one of you for being here"

These are anxious times around Bowling Green. Quarterback Omar Jacobs is hurt. And until there is official word about how long he will be out, expect more than one Falcons fan to be holding their breath. Jacobs, the 6-4, 225-pound junior, suffered a separated left (non-throwing) shoulder after being sacked in the first quarter of a 45-14 home loss to Western Michigan. The Broncos, easily the surprise team in the MAC, now find themselves a threat in the MAC West Division race at 4-3, 2-2. Jacobs, 6-of-9 passing for 98 yards before his exit, leaves BG in a precarious position if he is out of action for long. The loss did not bump the Falcons out of first place in the MAC East (4-3, 3-1) but left little room for any more errors. Akron, Miami and Ohio University each have two league losses, and the Zips and RedHawks will play the Falcons. BG got more bad news Saturday as receiver Marques Parks suffered a broken foot. Tailback P.J. Pope played sparingly after sitting out last week at Buffalo with ankle injuries. Jacobs' backup, Anthony Turner, had thrown one pass before the WMU game. He finished 20-of-38 for 242 yards and two interceptions. Reprieve: It's not often a team gets a second chance at a championship, but the Akron Zips are in that position. Two weeks ago the Zips went to Miami needing an upset but lost, 51-23. The Zips added to their misery on Saturday by losing to Army, which came in sporting the longest losing streak in the nation, 20-0. On Akron's homecoming! But the Zips (3-4, 2-2) can claim a share of the MAC East lead by knocking off the Falcons Saturday. Before losing in Oxford, Akron was known as a team that played well as an underdog. The Zips have a chance to regain that reputation

Can somebody explain this defense to me? I don't see the benefit of playing a bunch of DBs instead of playing another LB or DE when a team is consistently running over you. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing Mackey, but I was getting tired of watching a 195 pound guy getting blown off the line on EVERY run. Do our defensive coaches ever make adjustments??? Do we only know one defense and no matter what team we play against, that's what we do? I don't think the coaches are putting our best players in the best positions to succeed defensively. PS Please don't use the term "base defense" when responding to this. thank god

Site looks pretty familiar With three ranked opponents among its first six outings of the campaign, Army has faced a challenging early slate this autumn. Army's opening six foes have combined to forge a sparkling 27-12 record (.692) to date. Yet, three of Army's losses have come by 10 points or less, and twice in the last four games the Black Knights have maintained a fourth quarter lead Akron favored by 9, over/under is 50

Play good D and none of that matters.

Art Modell finally fulfilled his dream of 30 years. The trash-talking Baltimore Ravens rolled through the playoffs, capturing the Vince Lombardi trophy in Super Bowl XXXV. Their dominating defense backed up their talk by completely shutting down the New York offense. The only points yielded to the Giants were by the Baltimore special teams, who allowed a kickoff returned for a touchdown. Your defense can ABSOLUTLEY come out in any situation and win a game for you. That's what playing defense is about. You don't get to pick when you want to play defense. You play it ALL the time. Every time you are on the field. I am all about defense. I LOVE watching a great defense. It's so fun to watch a dominating D that can actually create turnovers or score off of turnovers. I remember before JD's first game he said "I'm going to play a defense that the Mac has not seen" I'm still holding onto that statement hoping that the day will come. Let's go D, shut down Army !

`HAWKS ON THE TUBE: Miami's home game versus Akron on Oct. 15 will be carried on a tape-delayed basis on Time Warner Cable and also will be available in Dayton through Time Warner's On-Demand service. Tim Bray will call the play-by-play while former RedHawk defensive lineman Gino DiGiandomenico provides analysis. All five of Miami's home games this season are televised.

Banged-up MAC: A few teams in the Mid-American Conference are already facing some injury issues. Akron, one of the MAC East favorites, still is waiting for full practice clearance on forward Jeremiah Wood, who suffered a knee injury last season; and transfer guard Nick Dials, who had knee surgery this past summer. At Bowling Green, starting guard Steven Wright is out with a broken foot. At Can't, transfer Trent Morgan is out with a sprained ankle. Toledo's ailments start with the coach, Stan Joplin, who is nursing a sore back. The East Division five includes junior forward Romeo Travis from Akron, senior forward Kevin Warzynski from Can't State, junior center Yassin Idbihi from Buffalo and the tandem of senior swingman Mychal Green and sophomore forward Leon Williams from Ohio, which won the MAC Tournament. The West Division five consists of forward Mike McKinney from Northern Illinois, center John Bowler from Eastern Michigan, guard Sam Villegas from Toledo, guard Peyton Stovall from Ball State and center Joe Reitz from Western Michigan.

Somebody PLEASE take photos and post as I will not be able to attend. The Bulls host Akron on Saturday, October 8 when the University celebrates Homecoming and Family Weekend. Activities include a pregame tent party for Alumni and families. Gates open at noon – game time is 1:30 p.m. It’s "ESPNU Day" with a football keychain giveaway and a special appearance by William “The Refrigerator†Perry who will meet fans for autographs in the West concourse. An athlete reunion and Hall of Fame weekend activities are scheduled. Fans of the hit movie Napoleon Dynamite will get to meet Jon Gries who played “Uncle Rico†and Efren Ramirez who starred as “Pedro†appearing on campus as celebrity Grand Marshals of the Homecoming Parade which takes place at halftime. The Homecoming and Family Weekend game is sponsored by Student Affairs, The UB Alumni Association, Adelphia and Star 102.5. UAM, I bet I could get at least 10 to 20 people that have NEVER been to an Akron game to the Rubber Bowl with this promotion.
