Zero. Sad day but MLB is showing us that traveling city to city is not going to work. The bubble used by NBA, NHL, and MLS has had much better results so far. But that’s not going to work with students. Our one hope for football is if the NFL follows the bubble concept and not MLB’s.

Now factor in a community college “right across the street” where you can get a degree for a fraction of the cost. Or Wayne College for that matter, now has 4 year degrees. I would have never taken a class at main campus if they had bachelor’s degrees at Wayne 10 years ago. Now factor in a generation of people who would rather be behind a screen than actually interacting with other people. They can sit on their couch now and get a degree with their laptop. Again at a fraction of the cost. If you do go to a traditional program, every time you turn around they have their hands in your pockets for another fee. And they look around and wonder why enrollment is dropping. Traditional college doesn’t add up.

The Big Ten has a TV contract with Fox worth $2.64 billion dollars. Not counting revenue from the Big Ten Network. By my figures that's over $34 million per year from TV. Ohio State games are broadcast on 68 radio stations (including 2 in Akron). Those stations pay for the rights to those games. Ohio State can play football games without ticket and parking and concession revenue. MAC teams don't have that revenue stream. They need the tickets, the parking, the concessions, the souvenir sales, etc to keep the doors open. That also shows us how far the Power Five and the "Other Five" conferences are apart.

I do know the pros have the choice to play or not, and several in each league have opted out. i would hope student athletes would have that sam option.

Not at all. What I’m saying is the Power 5 schools can play without fans. Their sports bring in other revenue.

A previous poster recently complained about so much spent on so few. I fully understand the value to the student athletes. I played football in high school and it helped me more in my career than any of the classes I took. The knowledge is important, but doesn't get you anywhere without the goal setting, work ethic, teamwork, and putting it all out there for someone else. To name a few hard lessons learned. I wouldn't trade it for all the books in the library. The athletic department is under attack by its so called "fans". I answer them. You can read whatever you want by the order I put my responses in, it's really not that complicated.

The fact that that's all you got from my response tells me that's all YOU guys care about. Why don't you two answer the simple question.

We haven’t seen the overreaction we saw in March with one positive test. All five major leagues are ramping up, all have had positive test results, those players are quarantined and the games go on. College is different. Not all conferences have major network deals, out of conference $$ games are cancelled, so most (all?) non-Power 5 programs have little revenue coming in.

IMHO... properly done... a marketing tool for the university. P5 schools take the best advantage of that and reap the rewards. a recreational opportunity for students and alumni. Which done properly results in contributions based on what I have read from several posters. And sponsorships. We all know alumni who take a lot of pride in the school’s athletic accomplishments. a teaching program for future professionals, also giving them a nice resume builder.

OTOH all the Zips “fans” who want to see the football program killed, despite the consequences, will probably get their wish. At least this year.

So let’s say we cut football, or drop it into Tiffin’s league. We lose the ESPNU Tuesday night payday. We lose the annual 7 digit away games against P5. We lose attendance (if that’s even possible). We eventually cut scholarships which actually cost what? I’m assuming the radio coverage is zero cost/income. We still have the Dialer. Which from everything I have heard cost less than renovating/reconstructing the Rubber Bowl. And basketball and soccer become independent or also drop. More programs are cut, since FBS football covers itself and a big chunk of the rest of the athletic department budget. I’m not saying the University won’t drop football. I don’t have a lot of faith in “management” making any competent decisions. I just don’t see the huge cost savings that a few keep preaching about...

If football goes, I might be done with my old school. A program that is not only self-sustaining, but covers a lot of the athletic dept. budget deserves better.

I’m going to watch pro football, with or without the crowd. Might be a little strange for while, until I get into the game. Then I’ll barely notice. College football, without the huge contracts a lot of the FBS programs have, rely too much on gate money to sustain. The MAC is at the governor’s and COVID’s mercy

Well you can start with the money that comes from the TV networks for coverage, esp on weeknights. Then factor in the money from bowl games. FBS buy games. Sponsorships for the team and the stadium. Ticket sales. As we’ve discussed, he’ll I can’t count that high

And who knows, maybe Tom will turn the program around. Stranger things have happened...

The first casualty, the scholarship MIAC(?) conference, just cancelled the 2020 football season.

It would be interesting to see the language of the contracts. I bet in the future they all have a disaster clause, if not already.

There's a theory going around that the gov't is doing that to all of us by reopening some stuff, the numbers go up, ICU's fill back up, and they quarantine again. Wash, rinse, and repeat until everyone is immune. And a lot of the old people are off the social security/medicare coffers...

One selling point with the Big Ten is the footprint almost matches the MAC. A lot more opponents can be reached by bus.

College athletics are a convenient target right now, and a big reason for that is a LOT of the faculty is very jealous of sports. My high school was the same way. But college athletics are a drop in the bucket as far as university spending goes. It's easy to take what is budgeted, and divide that by what 450? 500? student athletes. To be honest you also need a head count of student sports fans who attend the games for recreation, and try to factor in the name recognition and publicity it brings. But you also have to consider the network TV money football brings in, the away games at FB$ stadiums, and ticket revenue. Football revenue covers a substantial part of the athletic department's budget. Imagine if the team were successful and the university had the foggiest idea about advertising and marketing it... Then we could compare that to the costs and student utilization of (for starters) the busses, the bowling alley, the pool hall, the theater, the workout facility, the rock climbing wall, the indoor pool. That's a good start. Then we can look into things like, why the University spent $22,679,000 on Quaker Square, so they could evict all of the small businesses in there. Then spend an untold amount of money converting the hotel into dorms that would only be used a couple years before they locked the doors and left it sit empty. We could go on questioning university spending all week, without even getting started on the Scar's spending. Athletics are a drop in the budget. Bucket. Something like that...
