I'm convinced it needs to be on campus. And I have heard from alumni who are making contributions to the cause, who will have it no other way. From Jake I agree, Joe Soccerfan has nooo problem finding a parking spot and walking across campus to watch the team. And neither does the boisterous student section, as well as the other students peppered in with the general admission. We had lots of Joe Akron and tons of students at the Info. Once. When I took my sons to the Rubber Blow, it was a stadium by the airport. When I take them to the Info, they walk across campus. They see that the U is not a community college, or an urban CSU campus. They take in the "scenery" and the Union and the Rec and everything else there for the students. They have a very different opinion of "Hilltop High". They just might take it seriously when they choose a college.

I have to agree with that. I was born 2 years after the last Cleveland title. When the Zips soccer team won the national championship, everyone in my house looked at me to see how I would react. It was more relief than excitement.

What if the area around the arena ans stadium becomes a bar and restaurant district (again)? Best of both worlds. Not to mention what it would do to campus life.

I've been hearing this since the 1970's. Yes it's popular among adolescents, and is gaining in popularity (as fast as the population of adolescents grows???). We heard it with the NASL. We heard it with the MISL. We heard it with the alphabet soup that followed. But that has never translated to pro sport popularity. Don't get me wrong, nobody wants to see the MLS prosper and become relevant more than I do. And I think it's a crime we don't have an MLS team in this market. After being the only profitable MISL and NPSL(1) franchises, we've shown our stripes. But to tell you the truth, I am more worried as a soccer fan about lacrosse than I am a baseball fan worried about soccer...

Suit yourself. Walking through the Student Union at lunch time, I have to disagree with your "no one ever". LOL. Must be a bunch of old farts going there for lunch everyday.

ESPN SportCenter rarely features MLS at all. Sometimes an international play makes the top ten, or a Beckham stir will make the news. But I'm not ready to put MLS above MLB anytime soon. One problem with baseball is the season is nine months long, you don't see a lot of big stories until the pennant races and playoffs. Same with basketball. Injuries and big performances make the news. But Boston playing Baltimore in June just doesn't grab anybody. Not like a regular season NFL game (1 of only 16).

Jerry Palm has Akron the 15 seed in the West, playing tOSU in the first round. Which for a "typical" 12 credit hour student, that equals $800.00 a year. I understand what you're saying, I attend as a student, and have observed the way students are treated at men's soccer and men's basketball games. "You're not a Rowdie? Go over there and leave us alone." There is so much more potential prime seating in a facility the size of the JAR, if it had been designed properly. There's so much wasted space. Obstructions. Multi-purpose "labs" that I wonder if they have even been used the past decade.

No matter what happens Friday night, Akron has a bye for the first two rounds. If they win, then they still win the regular season title, and top seed in Cleveland. That also comes with an auto bid in the NIT if the worst case scenario happens in Cleveland.

Finally made it back down to the JAR (yeah I know, but class, family, job, other job, and covering other sports kept me busy). I'm convinced. It HAS to be on campus. Not downtown. I forgot the electricity on campus at night. And how much off~campus facilities are missing.

Is anyone doing the road trip to Harmarville, PA Friday night for the conference tournament?

I frequent a Cleveland sports fan forum, and the CSU fans are always complaining that the TV stations cover Akron and Can't, but not CSU. The TV and radio stations and PD really played up Akron's soccer championship. And they have extensive coverage of AK basketball in The Dance. Just a couple FWIW's... IIRC Akron gets a fair amount of news coverage. Keep in mind, the Akron metro area is less than a third the size of Clevaland. And Cleveland's crime rate per capita is higher.

Not necessarily, especially for a start-up program. Assuming the university decided to sanction the sport, AND provide scholarships, it could still play in Division II. A DII or DIII program would have some long travels, compared to DI, but would seem like a good growing point. DI would have closer rivals, BGSU, Miami, Notre Dame, Mercyhurst, Robert Morris. Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State. Fun to think about.
