That was closer than it needed to be. But we're 6 for 6!!!

I know I had a lot of "spurtability" when I watched her...
-
What if the area around the arena ans stadium becomes a bar and restaurant district (again)? Best of both worlds. Not to mention what it would do to campus life.

I've been hearing this since the 1970's. Yes it's popular among adolescents, and is gaining in popularity (as fast as the population of adolescents grows???). We heard it with the NASL. We heard it with the MISL. We heard it with the alphabet soup that followed. But that has never translated to pro sport popularity. Don't get me wrong, nobody wants to see the MLS prosper and become relevant more than I do. And I think it's a crime we don't have an MLS team in this market. After being the only profitable MISL and NPSL(1) franchises, we've shown our stripes. But to tell you the truth, I am more worried as a soccer fan about lacrosse than I am a baseball fan worried about soccer...

ESPN SportCenter rarely features MLS at all. Sometimes an international play makes the top ten, or a Beckham stir will make the news. But I'm not ready to put MLS above MLB anytime soon. One problem with baseball is the season is nine months long, you don't see a lot of big stories until the pennant races and playoffs. Same with basketball. Injuries and big performances make the news. But Boston playing Baltimore in June just doesn't grab anybody. Not like a regular season NFL game (1 of only 16).

Baseball dying? What attendance trends are you looking at? http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/...ttendance.shtml 1980 attendance: 43,014,136 1990 attendance: 54,823,741 2011 attendance: 73,451,522 Source: http://www.ballparksofbaseball.com/attendance.htm We won't even look at minor league... I love soccer and all, but come on, you are reaching on saying baseball is dying.

...and put the Zips on the Ohio map...
-
Jerry Palm has Akron the 15 seed in the West, playing tOSU in the first round. Which is NC's bracket. http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/bracketology Lunardi has us #59, which should put us against #5 Michigan St, right? Or do the regions skewer all that? I think I'd rather have the Bucks in the first round, and keep them from hitting from the arc.
-
The Zips just won the bid to host the 2013 TSCHL tournament.
-
And closing out the season against conference teams. Not getting beat to hell by non-conference teams and limping into the tourney like this year.
-
Wow, this certainly blew up from "students do pay for admission and should be treated better"...
-
Non-conference schedule for next year (the open dates will be filled in by the TSCHL). Homestands against tOSU, UK, and Duqu. Already looking forward to it. 9/21 Ohio State University M2 9/22 Ohio State University M2 9/29 @ Louisville M2 9/30 @ Louisville M2 10/5 10/6 10/12 10/13 10/19 10/20 10/26 University of Kentucky M2 10/27 University of Kentucky M2 11/3 @ Duquesne M1 11/4 @ Duquesne M1 11/9 11/10 11/16 11/17 11/23 11/24 11/30 12/1 12/7 12/8 12/14 12/15 1/11 1/12 1/18 1/19 1/25 1/26 2/1 2/2 2/8 @ Bowling Green State University M2 2/9 @ Bowling Green State University M2 2/15 Duquesne M1 2/16 Duquesne M1 2/22 2/23

Well, the Zips fought back from an early deficit, but came up just short losing 6-5 to Toledo in the conference tournament. Great run guys, and thanks for the memories seniors

The semi's are Wednesday at 7 on STO The finals are Saturday at 8 on ESPN2

Which for a "typical" 12 credit hour student, that equals $800.00 a year. I understand what you're saying, I attend as a student, and have observed the way students are treated at men's soccer and men's basketball games. "You're not a Rowdie? Go over there and leave us alone." There is so much more potential prime seating in a facility the size of the JAR, if it had been designed properly. There's so much wasted space. Obstructions. Multi-purpose "labs" that I wonder if they have even been used the past decade.
-
Thank you. That was my impression, but wanted to know for sure before I blew them up. Now, I don't have to, a +1 works fine.

No matter what happens Friday night, Akron has a bye for the first two rounds. If they win, then they still win the regular season title, and top seed in Cleveland. That also comes with an auto bid in the NIT if the worst case scenario happens in Cleveland.
-
Is the lower bowl just for season ticket holders and Rowdies?
-
Finally made it back down to the JAR (yeah I know, but class, family, job, other job, and covering other sports kept me busy). I'm convinced. It HAS to be on campus. Not downtown. I forgot the electricity on campus at night. And how much off~campus facilities are missing.
-
Is anyone doing the road trip to Harmarville, PA Friday night for the conference tournament?
-
I frequent a Cleveland sports fan forum, and the CSU fans are always complaining that the TV stations cover Akron and Can't, but not CSU. The TV and radio stations and PD really played up Akron's soccer championship. And they have extensive coverage of AK basketball in The Dance. Just a couple FWIW's... IIRC Akron gets a fair amount of news coverage. Keep in mind, the Akron metro area is less than a third the size of Clevaland. And Cleveland's crime rate per capita is higher.

Not necessarily, especially for a start-up program. Assuming the university decided to sanction the sport, AND provide scholarships, it could still play in Division II. A DII or DIII program would have some long travels, compared to DI, but would seem like a good growing point. DI would have closer rivals, BGSU, Miami, Notre Dame, Mercyhurst, Robert Morris. Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State. Fun to think about.

The hockey team needs a better rink. The ice and the boards at Center Ice aren't the best, and it doesn't have the capacity for further growth. But playing in a new arena built for the basketball programs would be overkill. Even if the sport became a sanctioned sport, only one Div II/III team averages more than 2500 per game. (Sidebar, looking at the numbers, Akron would be in the top 50 in DII/III attendance right now ). So a smaller rink would be better. Best case scenario would have been if the team were in existence when the Wellness and Rec was designed. It might have been considered then, I don't know. Apparently I'm the only one who sees how the student skate nights and pickup/intramural indoor soccer nights would add to the campus life. If someone in Akron were to build one, the team would have the same scheduling issues there, with early morning practices and game times after 10pm. It would have to hold more than Center Ice. Alice Noble in Wooster claims to hold 900. I don't know what the answer is.

Has anyone brought up the UPA site at Forge and E. Market? Yeah, the city wants it downtown, but they have no funds. The U wants it "on campus". Which is a couple blocks way. But that would give the University one heck of a footprint on E. Market. Parking would be a problem. Summa desnt have enough for itself (where does that sound familiar?). Just thinking out loud.
