  1. I went ahead and did the scoring system like if it counted last year. This is how it turned out: Bad Guys Baseball W. Basketball M. Cross Country Football M. Golf W. Golf Softball* W. Indoor Track and Field W. Outdoor Track and Field Good Guys M. Basketball W. Cross Country W. Soccer Softball* M. Indoor Track and Field M. Outdoor Track and Field Volleyball *Softball series was split 1-1. So each side gets 0.5 point... The Bad Guys would of won the trophy last year 8.5-6.5 ... if we can just win football, women's basketball, and keep our wins, we will win this year
  2. After the emotional win over #31 Michigan in Ann Arbor, with 8 days off, and a trip to Florida, can they beat Florida International who is searching for their first win of the season this saturday? I think so...Does anyone want my Blue and Gold kool-aid this time? Florida International is 0-2. Lost at Stetson friday 2-1, and lost to #9 Florida 2-0. We should see who starts this time. I'm going to put my guess on here (it'll probably be wrong) Goalkeeper: Senior Jeny Wolbert Defenders: Senior Liz Cloutier, Junior Kaitlin Flanagan, Sophomore Gillian Gross, Freshman Hailey Kirkwood Midfielders: Senior Jordan Clark, Junior Ashley Hughes, Sophomore Kelly DeNiro, and Sophomore Maggie Rusnak Forwards: Senior Katie Wise and Senior Rachel Phillip Unfortunately, it's the same time as the Cleveland State game. Will try to give people updates at halftime. I'll be with the Rowdies next to the soccer head...That's where you can find me if you're wondering...
  3. Is the sked out yet -- I know they open vs the national runners-up. Who else is there? I also noticed on the 11-12 roster that they have only 13 players -- one short of the scholarship limit. Did K-Coach lose more undergrad ballers? Frosh no-shows? saw that too...they lost a freshman and a sophmore that neither got any time last year at all..
  4. Wonder if Nikola is hurt. All the other Serbia players got in the game. The score indicates that Serbia put the Canucks away in the second half. 68-55 Serbia wins. There were a few other games with similar box scores. And I'm sure he played just a few days ago. This is NOT a knock on Nik, but he was clearly the 11th or 12th roster spot on this squad. I'm just happy he was able to practice though during this "offseason" while the rest of his team was in Canada. I feel the only way it could of worked better for Nik, was more game playing time...
  5. They'll be there for the Cleveland State game. The first game is usually packed. However, why just the Cleveland State game? Why not the whole season? In fact, why just show up to Men's Soccer? Why not Women's Soccer? Especially September 4th at 1pm, since the NFL season doesn't start until the 11th, and they're hosting Michigan State? Come on Rowdies, stop being fair weather, bandwagon fans. If you don't show up, you're already saying that You're a Can't Statecks fan, but go to Akron. It needs to stop. People say we have the best student/ overall fanbase in the whole country. I highly doubt that. Let me name a couple for you right off the top of my head. Indiana, UCLA, UCSB, Maryland, and Wake Forest. Can't tell me we have better fan support(student or overall) than all of these programs. I've never been impressed. Only one I was sort of impressed was the Tulsa-Akron game. So if a student is not impressed, what's making the average Joe interested in soccer? The team's conference and/or national contention. You can keep these average fans coming if the atmosphere, the play, and the attendance is remarkable. We have one and a half of those right now. SO GET OUT TO THESE GAMES, NOT FOR LEISURE OR A SOCIAL GATHERING, BUT FOR WAR!!!!!!!!!
  6. An Alumnus of the same school as me, I had the privilege to see her play junior and senior seasons, while bringing home a state title in 2004 her senior year back to our school as the highlight of her high school career. She then went to Dayton, had a decent career, and was the head of basketball operations at Rice last year. She knows how to win, and she expects nothing less. Just announced by Jodi Kest she is on the coaching staff this year. Can't wait to see how this year turns out!!!!!! http://www.gozips.com/sports/wbkb/2011-12/.../20110822shq6z0 Name is Ashley Armstrong...sorry for not clarifying that. In fact, another alumnus of the same school, Tori Arndt, played under Jodi Kest. That 2004 team was loaded. Should of won it the year before too...but whatever, that's the past. We could easily have MAC titles in volleyball, womens soccer, mens soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball, indoor track and field(men's and women's), outdoor track and field(men's and women's), and MAYBE softball (big maybe...i give it a %5 chance of happening)
  7. Hartwick's coach took his trash talking to Syracuse along with some of his players in winter 2009/2010
  8. Do any of you remember the Women's basketball season opener at home vs Michigan a few years ago? Deja vu(except for location)??? The only difference(other than location), is the women's soccer team isn't trying to turn this into a winning program. They've already done that. Now they're taking it to that next level. The level that your goal each year is to make it to the NCAA tournament. Next level after that would be your goal is to make the College Cup each year... We're getting there!!!!!!!!!!!! GO ZIPS!!!!!!
  9. here's quotes from Michigan's head coach: Michigan Head Coach Greg Ryan On scoring chances ... "We had four or five chances right in front of the goal, which we had in the second half. We had open players, and that's when you try to score. It comes down to our players having the composure to finish. I think it was two very different halves. We didn't play with a ton of urgency in the first half, but in the second half, we showed tremendous energy to try and score a goal and win a game. We certainly got that motivation, being down a goal." On Christina Murillo ... "Christina was fantastic. Nobody knows she had food poisoning from dinner last night. She ran out of gas there at the end. I talked with her head coach and he said he thinks she's got a great shot at being on the Mexican Olympic roster next year. It's only half of what she's capable of." On the lesson learned for Sunday's match vs. Oakland ... "I think its the lesson the girls learn every year. You cannot wait to put your foot on the pedal. You have to go after it. Akron did a very good job defending, and we got great chances, but could have had a lot more if it were 0-0 and Akron were coming forward to try and score. They had one forward and 10 people behind the ball. That's good coaching on their part. We righted the ship in the second half, but couldn't get any past their defense."
  10. from GoZips: ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Sophomore Kyarah Foushee scored her first career goal to lead The University of Akron women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over 2010 NCAA Tournament at-large selection Michigan at U-M Soccer Stadium Friday night. Senior goalkeeper Jeny Wolbert made nine saves to record the shutout, while senior Rachel Phillip sent three shots on target in the match. The victory extends Akron's unbeaten streak in season-openers to 11 games (10-0-1). The Zips have never lost a season-opener in the 11-year history of the program. It is also the first ever win by an Akron side over a Big Ten opponent. Phillip nearly opened the scoring in the fifth minute, when her header was knocked away by UM goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer. Foushee scored the match's only goal in the 40th minute of play, heading home a corner kick by fellow sophomore Kelly DeNiro from just in front of the Michigan net. "In the first part of the game we played good, attractive soccer against a good opponent which ultimately led to Kyarah's goal," said UA coach Chris Pfau. Three first half saves by senior goal keeper Jeny Wolbert ensured that the Zips would hold the lead into the halftime break. Akron would then keep the Wolverines off the scoreboard in the second half, with Wolbert stopping another six shots. The clean sheet by Wolbert was the 11th of her Akron career. "When we got tired and lost our legs a bit in the second half, we really battled and defended very well which I was extremely proud of," said Pfau. UA would come close to extending the lead on three different occasions in the second period. Phillip forced Haley Kopmeyer into saves in the 68th and 82nd minute, while Foushee nearly picked up the double in the 77th minute, forcing Kopmeyer into yet another save. The Zips are back in action next Saturday (Aug. 27) when they travel to Miami, Fla. to take on Florida International.
  11. I was almost right on the starting lineup. Phillip and Wise did both start up front. However, Frawley did not start and neither did Cooper or Flanagan. Here's how it turned out!!!! Goalkeeper: Senior Jeny Wolbert Defenders: Senior Liz Cloutier, sophomore Gillian Gross, sophomore Amber Kern, freshman Hailey Kirkwood Midfielders: Senior Jordan Clark, Junior Ashley Hughes, Sophomore Kelly DeNiro, and Sophomore Maggie Rusnak Forwards: Senior Rachel Phillip and Senior Katie Wise Players that came off the bench were Senior Kara Cooper, Junior Kaitlin Flanagan, Junior Kirsten Schulte, and Sophomore Kyarah Foushee (who scored that winning header)
  12. I didn't do that on purpose, but it sure did work out well, didn't it? To be completely honest, I thought, going into Ann Arbor, #31 in nation, no way we're winning. But did I think we could tie them? Absolutely. I posted this as I found out they just got to their hotel in Ann Arbor, so I put that as the subhead. STAT OF THE NIGHT: With tonight's season opening win, Akron Lady Zips are now 10-0-1 all time in season openers. Under Coach Pfau, Akron is 4-0-0 in season openers...
  13. Just like GoZips have been stating with the men's basketball team on speaking the truth, I'm only trying to educate/tell the truth to the zips fanbase on a particular sport that they don't follow( which i mean by that is women's soccer, not soccer in general). This team just beat the #31 team in the nation. I don't know about you, but that Michigan State home opener on September 4th looks a lot more sexier now... Does anyone want what I was having to drink now? I believe it's called the Blue and Gold Kool-Aid...
  14. Akron scores first on a corner kick by Kelly DeNiro to Kyarah Foushee with 5 mins to go in first half. Second half now underway with the Lady Zips beating the Wolverines in Ann Arbor 1-0...GO ZIPS!! I`m really high on the blue and gold kool-Aid
  15. A road draw vs a Big-10+ NCAA tourney team? Send us some of that Maui Wowee you got! They don't make it that strong ovah heah. Not sure if you're aware of it, but Akron is unbeaten in season-openers since the program's inception in 2001, going 9-0-1. Under coach Chris Pfau Akron is 3-0 in season-openers, outscoring opponents by a total of 11-3. The Zips defeated Pittsburgh 6-2 in 2008, took down Wright State 2-1 in 2009, and defeated Illinois State 3-0 last year. We returned a lot of starters, and I feel really optimistic...Besides, didn't you remember the women's basketball season opener vs Michigan a few years ago? I know that that game was home, but still. I'll take the kid's line from "Angels in the Outfield" movie...... It can happen
  16. Grandstand additions are almost up...Should be done by next saturday...
  17. Match starts at 7:00pm tomorrow night. How do you see this turning out? I see most likely a 1-1 or 2-2 draw tomorrow night. Gozips.com said that Kirkwood and Frawley, both freshmen, are starting tomorrow night. Which Kirkwood surprises me since we're so deep in experienced defenders. Pfau must of been impressed with her in the preseason training. Frawley doesn't surprise me since we lost a lot of midfielders last season. I think this will be the starting 11. We'll find out if it's true. GK- Senior Jeny Wolbert 4 defenders- Senior Liz Cloutier, Senior Kara Cooper, Junior Kaitlin Flanagan, and Freshman Hailey Kirkwood 4 midfielders- Junior Ashley Hughes, Senior Jordan Clark, Sophomore Kelly DeNiro, and Freshman Alex Frawley 2 forwards- Senior Rachel Phillip and Junior Katie Wise Wise, Phillip, Cooper, or Hughes may not be starting and may come off the bench. Gross, Kern, Schulte, Steckel, or Rusnak may get a starting spot by tomorrow. This team is so deep this year compared to last year. Michigan was an NCAA Tournament team last year, so we should see how close we are to where we want to be. Heading to the intrasquad scrimmage tonight for the men's team. GO ZIPS!!!!!!
  18. by the way, Serb had 9 points and 10 boards in 25 minutes against Hong Kong. Couldn't remember seeing that anywhere. Sorry if it was already posted...
  19. This should also wake them up that they have a lot to learn still in order to be where they all want to be...
  20. Just add this thought here. 1. This team is better(if stayed healthy) than last year to the "eye test". 2. only 3 seniors on team this year: Cvetinovic, McClannahan, and Petersen 3. So far it seems we'll have a good 3 player class next year. 4. So theoretically, we'll be better in next season than we will this season...
  21. I'm not saying that without a key nonconference win we will be a top 25 team. To be honest, I could care less about the polls. No one really pays attention to the polls from the inside part of a program anyways. What I'm trying to say, and so is GoZips, is that this team, AT THE END OF THE YEAR, will be a top 25 team. Also, Memphis had to start somewhere. So did San Diego State. Because I'm a huge college basketball fan since I was in middle school, but I never heard about San Diego State until last year. We may be one year away from top 10/16 in nation, but we're not too far off from top 20/25 this year...
  22. Lots of exuberant hyperbole posted recently, but this one is pretty over-the-top. I'll give you the past 8-or-so years haven't seen too many eyeball-test teams. But in the 10 years previous, EMU (Dial, Head, Boykins), K.e.n.t (Elite 8 guys), Miami (Sczerbiak, Newble, Davis, etc), OU (Jamerson, Trent, Hunter, and many others), BG (Stacey/McCloud), Ball State (Lonnie Jones, Theron Smith, etc)....all have had some really legit rosters. And won some big games. Even Marshall had some big teams, with VanHoose and Slay. This group of Zips hasn't won anything. In the past, KD's teams have been ones where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Hopefully he can continue that, with the increased talent level. Then we'll have something extra-special. This will probably be KD's toughest year to coach. Dividing minutes will be tough. Zeke's a Junior...he needs to blossom big-time this year. Breaking-through and beating BCS-programs hasn't been done in a long time. I can't remember ever getting a single vote in any "real" basketball poll, let alone Top 25 ranking. A few votes in the "others" section would be an impressive step forward. Lots of milestones can be reached this season, beyond the elusive NCAA tourney win. I dig the excitement and the potential as much as anyone...but let's be real. Best ever...even by only the eyeball test? MAC basketball has a lot more tradition than that. I'm glad someone is slipping in a little reality every now and then. Top 25? This started with someone saying that anything less than Top-16 would be a dissappointment. Now I think I've seen someone who's been watching practices believe that we could even be better than that? Heck, we've never even BEATEN a Top-25 team. I think you're right. We've never received a single vote as an "others receiving votes" in any legit Top-25 poll.....ever....even with a 26-win team. So, if we win 27 or 28 games we'll not only get votes, but we'll get tons of votes, nationwide, from people who've barely even heard of Akron, and move all the way to the middle section of the Top-25? Dozens of people would all have to change their opinion about Akron, simultaneously, and that's not going to happen. Lets look at what could possibly happen sometime soon, although it still would require an amazing scenario to fall into place... Realistically, if we can somehow find a way to get through maybe our first 10 or 12 games of a season without a loss, maybe that would get 5 or 10 people to possibly change their opinion and vote for us? Where would that put us? Maybe about the 50-60 range? Of course, it would vanish after we lose our first game. But geez, I would consider that a MAJOR step forward for the program, which would be incredibly exciting. In fact, I'll jump for joy the first time we just simply record a win against a Top-25 team. I can go watch as many practices as I want, and I'm quite sure that I couldn't look at this team and predict a sudden and incredible 80 position rise in our national ranking. It's not ever going to happen that fast. Akron is still a nobody to far too many people who matter. So San Diego State, Butler and Memphis changed the voters' votes, but if we had a season like their's, it wouldn't be the same for us? That's right...because we're the black hole in the NCAA...we're the abandoned child of the NCAA
  23. Low expectations? the sink isn't that big at all. Probably half the size of an average home sink...
  24. Homer rationalizations aside, that very average team once Larry Sanders left ended up going to the Final Four. ...and here I am saying the same thing as I did then. Having seen our freshmen now and how good they can be, I think we'll give you a good game. I still don't predict a W because we are so young and the JAR is a tough place to play. It seems that Dambrot is also changing up the makeup of your team to a more full-court style like we play. Should be interesting to see how we match-up. It will be a good measuring stick for what is a very young team. Congrats!!! You want a cookie now? How about a cake? or how about a donut? or how about becoming the president? Jokes put to side, I disagree with you about a couple things. 1. Who cares if you win your conference? I rather have a coach get me to the Final Four than to win your conference. A lot of schools win their conference, but how many of them make it to the Final Four? Not many... 2. I believe a regular season series would be great for both programs. You're not going to get Big East, Big Ten, SEC, and ACC teams to come to your place constantly. So you'll have to get some mid-majors on your schedule. Why not play a school that would get you ready for CAA play, and it gets Akron ready for MAC play. You have to face reality, and reality is you have a coach that has now been in the Final Four. He'll be hungry to get that taste again...
  25. Why don't you come to the intrasquad practice tomorrow then? I'm sure you haven't seen this team yet. At first, I didn't think that either. But watching them, there is no way they can't be THAT good. Your opinion is what the players are thinking. But yet Dambrot and his staff can see this team can go far if they can work together and believe how good they really are. You have to look at it a different way too. We expected a lot this past season from the men's soccer team, and they came through. We've had high expectations in the past for the men's soccer team, and didn't come through. Give this team some time, it's only August. I like what I see, and I guess if you want to say it; Yes, I'm drinking the Blue & Gold kool-aid... oh yeah,
