Brothers Jim and Jon Heacock.Jim Heacock:Current defensive coordinator at Ohio State. Other coaching jobs he's had in his career:1996-2004: Ohio State Defensive Line Coach1988-1995: Illinois State Head Coach1983-1987: Washington Defensive Line Coach1981-1982: Bowling Green Defensive Coordinator1978-1980: Bowling Green Defensive Line Coach1975-1977: Muskingum Defensive Coordinator1973-1975: Muskingum Defensive Back CoachHe actually employed Urban Meyer in 1988 as his outside linebackers coach. ________________________________________________________________________________Jon Heacock:He is currently(unfortunately) the defensive coordinator of the Golden Flushes. Other jobs before turning to the dark side:2001-2009: Youngstown State Head Coach2000: Youngstown State Defensive Coordinator1997-1999: Indiana Defensive Coordinator1992-1996: Youngstown State Defensive Coordinator1991: Youngstown State Defensive Backs Coach1990: Army assistant coach1988-1989: Michigan grad assistant1985-1987: West Liberty Defensive Coordinator (also the defensive line and secondary coach)1984: Stuebenville (HS) assistant coach1983: Toledo grad assistant defensive line coach__________________________________________Both of these brothers have a couple things in common. Alumni of West Branch High School, and a passion for coaching. However, my passion for coaching is basketball, not football. They're putting me in tough spots to root for them being at OSUcks and Can't State. So I guess I'll stick to rooting for the Warriors of West Branch and wear my Zip colors in front of them.

There is a sarcasm emoticon on ZN.O and most other forums. It's the familar old "roll eyes" emoticon: Without the emoticon, your previous post was quite easy to misinterpret as serious. If you weren't being serious, then my response didn't apply directly to you, but only to anyone who seriously believes the words you posted as sarcasm. The comments you have made in subsequent posts have been fair and are shared by many. Same with the comments by Big Zip. As I've said many times, there's nothing wrong with fair and reasonable criticism. I'm in total agreement with GP1 that it's time for the personal attacks from a few postebeing built. rs to stop. It detracts from an otherwise fair and reasonable discussion about the very real shortcomings we all see in UA football. As Zips fans, we should continue to try to point out what we see as not working, and also give credit where credit is due for any improvements we might see. I will say this...Most Athletic Directors would just focus on trying to get the football program turned around first, and then work on the others. TW has made sure that every sport is getting better. The one highlight of TW's time here, is that he's a great AD when it comes to upgrading or building new facilities. He was a big part of the Minnesota's new stadium being built. I would love to see what he does with the basketball program. The JAR either needs upgraded, or we need a new arena, but keep the JAR for basketball practices and volleyball matches...

Last night, my friend and I wanted to see what Infocision looked like in the NCAA Football 12 game. When we decided to play a game with Akron together against Can't St, We saw them show the definition of what each style of play each school ran offensively. Can't St had Spread offense. We had the Pro style offense it said. Here was the exact definition of the pro style according to the game: "Pass first mentality to set up the run" When My friend and I read that, we both wondered "What offense do we run then?"

4) By "stuff," you mean office gossip, right? In the last large company I worked for, I attended high-level planning meetings on a routine basis. After the meetings, I'd hear "stuff" from people who weren't in the meetings, but knew a friend of someone who worked in the same department as someone who was in the meeting. The "stuff" they passed on through the grapevine was inevitably distorted to suit someone's agenda. UA is similar to a large company. There are many departments full of many different people with many different agendas. In some cases you have some people who for, whatever reason, don't like other people and want to see them fail. They gladly pass on negative "stuff" about the person they don't like, and if nothing negative enough is available, they'll twist what's available into something negative. I have no doubt that there are UA employees who don't like Tom Wistrcill, Rob Ianello, and any number of other people on the staff. Maybe the feeling is mutual. Who really knows the truth? Certainly not those who are tuned into a single channel of negative gossip. Tuning into another channel might result in totally opposite "stuff." 1) So when you say "we can all basically say that this hiring was a favor by Tom Wistrcill to his buddy Rob Ianello," you are dead wrong. I am not included in that "we," and I'm pretty sure there are others here who don't want to be included in your all-inclusive "we can all." 2) If you applied a little independent thinking to your gossip channel, you might ask why Wistrcill would risk his own career on deliberately hiring an uncompetitive football coach when football is the biggest program at UA. Why didn't he get rid of Caleb Porter and bring in one of his loser soccer coach buddies? Why didn't he get rid of Keith Dambrot and bring in one of his loser basketball coach buddies? Why did he just bring in a new baseball coach who everyone seems to think is a winner? 3) You know, there are real, experienced adults on this forum who have been around the world many times and heard all this "stuff" a thousand times over. You can pretend all you want that all the "stuff" you hear is real. But everyone with any real life experience knows it's just office gossip until confirmed by a credible source who doesn't have their own personal agenda. Listen, I have no problem with anyone criticizing Ianello, Wistrcill, or anyone else for what you think they might not be doing right. There are plenty of reasons for criticizing everyone, including me, you, and the man in the moon. We're all imperfect and we're all open to legitimate criticism. 1) But when you go beyond legitimate criticism and pick sides in a fight in which you don't know all the facts, you're on your own. There's no "we" about it. 1) So you basically spend 7 paragraphs on why it's not "we". And people use the excuse "I don't have time to watch Akron women's soccer." I'm tired of all these fair weathered or a popular sport Zip fan... 2) Your logic on firing Porter or Dambrot is totally insane. Because everyone the next day would of been at Wistrcill's doorstep with torches and pitchforks wanting answers. And then bringing in "losers"? Come on, I thought you were more intelligent than that. TW isn't that dumb to try that. He saw an opportunity(bad record, new stadium) and decided to take a risk. 3) Stop using this "real, experienced adults" stuff as well. Is that a shot in the gut to us college students on this forum? Because I have been a volunteer in a high school basketball program for a while, and I have so many connections now in NE Ohio, I will keep gaining experience every day no matter where I am. 4) By stuff, I meant I'm not taking my post seriously? Do I really need to find, and get ZN.o to add an emoticon saying "BEWARE: THERE IS SARCASM BEYOND THIS POINT" seesh...A lot of people were saying it, and I was being sarcastic about it. People were asking Zach about the "source?" and I decided to have a little fun with it since last week was atrocious. We do know people in athletic department, but never said anything to that sort of "stuff". Wistrcill went for a risk that was going to be a complete failure or is going to turn this program completely around. I don't like how he has handled the student situation(soccer v football), but he needs to work on that. I'll give him the next 5 games as well...

Since I've taken some heat from other social networking sites, I want to clarify my post a little. Goalkeeping is a concern for me NOT for game to game. But because of our DEPTH. We have only two goalkeepers on the roster. If one of them gets hurt, it will effect the team in a big way. Because on a given day, you may only have one goalkeeper to play, and that goalkeeper may get injured as well during the game, but will have to stay in due to the other goalkeeper already being hurt. That's my ONLY concern at goalkeeper. Just about every goal sunday was a result of the whole team not playing well. Not just Jeny. There is a lot of young players on this team, and I'm sure they learned from this game, not only physically, but especially mentally and emotionally from it. I hope that the Lady Zips come back from South Florida this weekend with a pair of victories and pushing them above .500 for first time since beating Michigan. Good luck Lady Zips

Where do you draw the line? You been to many swim meets lately? If not are you a "true Zip fan"? Personally I'm with Jacob, I can think of more things than I have time to list that I'd rather do than attend a women's soccer match... I don't think that makes me any less of a Zips fan, it just means I don't really care for women's soccer. I think the main question is, if Women Soccer would turn into a power house like Men's Soccer, would you go to it then? If you say yes, then you are less of a Zip fan than Mes, if you say no, then you don't care about women soccer. Personally, If Swimming was really really good, and competing for national titles, I still probably wouldn't go to often. To be honest, it depends on their style of play. I hate the American style right now. This is why I don't follow the MLS. I'd rather watch good Euro soccer. If all the NCAA men's programs played "sexy football" and the Zips were only an average team, then I would still watch them. If the Zips start playing like NIU or some other physical, straightforward team, I wouldn't go to nearly as many matches. So for me, it's more about the style than wins and losses. Right now, Porter has the guys playing an extremely attractive style. I can't say the same for Pfau and that's why I don't go to nearly as many games. The fact that I made it out to 2 games last year makes me a bigger "fan" than probably 95% of the students on campus last year. I don't know how much exactly you've watched, but basically this is the second class of recruits he's basically been able to bring in, so it's still taking time. Pfau was not happy at all with their play sunday. They play closer to the style play of our men's team than I've seen in the past; however, it's one thing to put the style you want to put out there, and it's another to execute it. Porter's teams have always executed well. If you were there sunday, you would of seen a lot of bad passes in the match. The execution is still better than in years past, but Akron men's team wasn't built over night, and for most of us, it seems like that has to happen for ANY SPORT at Akron for us to improve. I hate to say it, but we have the worst fans in the country. We're the only DI school I know that has had a problem with attendance in almost every sport. No one really came out to soccer unless it was Ohio State or another Big Ten school until we made it to the National Championship in 2009. And to answer your question about swimming, I've made it a goal of mine to go to one each year. The same is for golf, tennis, and track. Cross Country is a little harder to choose where to stand, but I try to go there as well...But whatever...Guess I'm just an insane person that loves sports and supports the athletic programs here at Akron. Maybe I should apply for the AD job...

I don't know if I would use the word coward. I would use the word "lazy". I worry about what happens if we have a terrible next couple of years. This downturn couldn't have happened at a worse time. It raises so many possibilities and none of them are good. Things could be bad in a way that they were after Faust's final season. Lazy? Really? Have you ever met Tom? Can anyone take a deep breath, back away from your angst about the FB team, and really take an objective look at UA Athletics today? You're better than this. B) B) Go Zips! +1 I am as outspoken as anyone about not liking iCoach, but the Department of Athletics is in excellent shape. Coaches Porter, Dambrot, and Kest all have long contracts and we have one of the best track coaches in the country. Even after major upgrades the past ten years, the facilities are continuing to be improved. The new woman's golf program seems to be doing well and the woman's soccer is starting to compete at the top of the MAC. Other than the football program, what's not to love? Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't TW have credit for those long contracts of our great coaches? And as much as we like to make fun of YouTubeTom, hasn't the addition of the YouTube videos been a cheap way of making the coaches and programs more accessible? It's easy to keep them here, when you finally get them here and they have success. It's finding a coach to turn a program around and not make it worse, is a good Athletic Director in my opinion. We can all basically say that this hiring was a favor by Tom Wistrcill to his buddy Rob Ianello. And what Zach said about the search committee suggesting Luke Fickell is true. We know people in the athletic department from previous classes, activites, sporting events, etc. together with those people that are now in the athletic department. Not mentioning any names, but we hear plenty of stuff, especially when that whole interviewing/hiring process was going on. A word to other students, alumni, or fans that want to get inside. Start telling the people what you're hearing with confidence and if you're lucky, they'll get so mad that they start defending their side of it, that they accidentally leak some information(grad assistants most vulnerable to this )...

I need some clarification here. Are you saying that you're expecting 3k-4k for a women's soccer game? on a Sunday afternoon? on a holiday weekend? When few students are even on campus? Please convince be I am wrong on this after the game, but I'd guess that the crowd would be closer to the 30-40 range rather than the 3,000 to 4,000 range. Are you telling me that 3-4,000 students show up for basketball? because i was talking about students...not the entire crowd...thought you understood that since you even bolded the part "decent student showing"...Which students for basketball is usually around 30-40 students...that's what im guessing today... First of all, far more than 30-40 students show up for men's basketball games. You obviously are only counting the people in the lower ends, which are seats that are reserved only for students who are members of the AK Rowdies. And I'm sure they'll tell you that their average numbers are much larger than that. I'd say they are at 30-40 on a really bad night, to be honest. You need to look around at all of the people sitting in the 3 bleacher sections sometime. I can assure you that there is no comparison between Men's Basketball games and women's soccer games when it comes to students in attendance. And since the "announced" attendance for this women's soccer game was 432, and Men's basketball averages about 3-4k per game, if we even assume a relatively similar mix of fans, I think it would probably even be an understatement to say that a significantly higher number of students go to basketball games. It's nothing personal, and I don't mean to slam you. I enjoy Zips soccer too. But, I just find it ridiculous that people on this board waste their time attempting to compare fan interest in football and basketball to soccer in any way whatsoever. You did slam me, but that's okay. What I'm trying to do is give an idea to people what I expected yesterday. The best comparison was volleyball, but how many posters have been to either women's soccer match or volleyball match? Same with women's basketball. So my idea was to give SOMEWHAT of an idea of what it's like... I never really said i expect a men's basketball crowd fpr a women's soccer match, but come on. Just trying to get people to support the Lady Zips. The men's program has always been good, but could never get over that hurdle to the next level of being an annual national contender. Women's soccer is improving, but they can't get to the next level, of consistently being an NCAA tournament team on there own. I know a lot of women's soccer players that have told me they feel like home matches are away matches as well. I'm sorry, but I can't stand this. How do we let an Akron athletics team feel like every time they get on their home pitch, it feels like an away match? By the way, about 180 or more of those people in attendance were from either Michigan State, or rooting for the Spartan player from Green HS...

i expect it will be ready for September 16th. Concession Stand/restroom area looks almost complete, and the ticket booth on the Southeast gate, is in the mist of getting the roof done. So we're getting there. Should be done by September 16th...

Tough loss today. The biggest issue with this team is that they play the way they need to when it's perfect weather. When it's raining, windy, or sleeting, they just don't play great at all. They need to get better at playing through the tough weather. If anyone saw what happened today, thats basically what happened in Florida at Florida International. Michigan State had their best player in program history get a hat trick today. Their defense was locked on even though they play a 3-4-3 and not a conventional 4-4-2 like Michigan did. I feel like this could be a blessing in disguise. You can learn a lot more from losing than you can from winning all the time. Look at our men's team last year. This showed us today that this team has a lot to learn this year. We spoiled the home opener by winning in Ann Arbor. Michigan State knew that and they weren't going to take us lightly like Michigan did. The biggest area of concern for me with this team is two areas: Goalkeeper and outside backs. Early on, I saw that we tried to move our outside backs up the sides. but couldn't work well when Spartans counter attack was quicker than our outside backs. I think once we get to MAC play, you will see some changes in the starting lineup. The freshmen haven't completely got Pfau's system down, and I'm sure some of them are good enough that they could start. The honest part, is that this team can still win the MAC Championship. Toledo, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, and Miami(OH) are the key matchups in the MAC to see if we're the real deal this year, or if next year will be our time. We've been able to breeze through the MAC East the past two years with our only competition being Miami(OH). the key to winning the MAC this year will be having 1 loss or less on the MAC West part of the schedule. Basically, take men's basketball, and flip it around and that's what it is for women's soccer. The MAC West is so dominant in years past, 75% of the MAC tourney teams would be from the MAC West(top 8 make it). They play in a South Florida tournament next weekend against Florida Atlantic and South Florida. Hopefully they play much better than the past couple weeks. I do know this, WOMEN'S ATHLETICS AT AKRON ARE IMPROVING. Coach Ron Arenz, the volleyball head coach, has said that this is the best team he's had and also the toughest schedule he's ever had. For women's soccer, this is the best team in the history of our program so far. Remember, this is only the tenth or eleventh season of the program. We're getting better players each year nationally, and men's soccer is definitely going to help the impact of the women's soccer recruiting years from now. From year's past, this may be our toughest non-conference schedule. The home Eastern Illinois one is a win for us, like the Canisus one last year. It's a game to play all the seniors(senior night/day) before MAC play begins...only other home non conference game was Michigan State. Away matches were Michigan, Florida International, South Florida, and Florida Atlantic. The best teams in the MAC play the best competition they can. So if you want to win the MAC, you have to play competition that is supposed to be better than the MAC, in order to prepare you for conference play. I believe we did that this year. Don't look into the 2nd half scoring too much today. MSU had more talent, more experience, and were more organized. Their coach has been there longer than us even having a women's soccer program(21 years coaching compared to 10 seasons for Akron). Hope everyone has a great holiday weekend(or just holiday tomorrow). Stay safe, and GO ZIPS!

The word is that currently Michigan State is sleeping(maybe) at Quaker... Match is tomorrow at 1:00pm. Gates open at 12:00pm. First 250 fans get a free t-shirt. Should be a fun matchup. Should be a decent student showing tomorrow...probably not the size of men's soccer or the size of volleyball, but probably around the size of men's basketball... I'll be showing up with my soccer head and vuvuzela to see what the Lady Spartans of East Lansing thinks about it...

This is not my first time seeing an Akron-Ohio State, but at least Brookhart brought a fire with him against opponents bigger than us...Ianello just accepts defeat before even stepping on the field against these opponents... I still believe this, and all of you can disagree (and probably will), that Brookhart got a raw deal. I feel that there's a good chance that Brookhart would be still coaching if we never got that new stadium. Brookhart never had control with the disciplinary aspect of it, but he sure knew how to play against Can't State and the big opponents. Isn't that what matters the most in this sport? I want to thank MAC-Sports for making all MAC athletic games free...won't have to waste my money on this crap...
-
Part of me wishes that Ohio State had Pryor, Herron, Posey, Berry, and others so that we lose 100-0 and Ianello gets fired by 5pm tonight...
-
See you guys later...I can't stand this playcalling...4th and inches, and you don't go for it. You're telling your players you don't trust they can get that inch. No wonder why we went 1-11...You're the underdog. You're not going to win the game by running the ball. You have to GO BIG OR GO HOME...looks like Ianello is already on I-71.... I'm heading to volleyball...at least I know Coach Ron Arenz has trust in his players, and expects to win...

Apparently Urban Meyer said we have yet to get a first down. Unless my eyes have decieved me, I swear we saw a first down by the Zips on the first drive...

Last night was huge for the MAC. On the men's side, Bowling Green upset the No. 9 Michigan Wolverines 2-0. I'll post the women's scores from yesterday soon. The one that sticks out to me is that Can't State is now 3-0 on the season in women's soccer(beating Cleveland State, St. Bonaventure, and Morehead State).

Schedule has been released for women's basketball. Some of the highlighted home games are: 12/10 vs Florida State 12/18 vs Youngstown State 12/28 vs Providence College 1/14 vs Can't State 2/4 vs Central Michigan 2/18 vs Bowling Green 2/28 vs Buffalo
