All the potential in the world, but some nights, this team is simply a joke.
That loss to JMU seems to be the turning point of the season. Everything since has been abysmal.

Shooting free throws the rest of the way.
With the way this team shoots free throws is that a good thing or bad?...

Flipping back and forth between the Zips and Cavs. I can't tell which game is more painful to watch. 😭

I think it's time to get legitimately concerned about our chances in the MAC tournament. Just a long stretch of bad basketball.

They're literally calling fouls on each possession. Two on the Zips for just playing defense. We're playing bad, but this is just brutal basketball to watch.

Ohio is 17-12, 11-5, 3rd in the MAC. They are a MUCH better team than Northern.
My bad. I guess I was confusing them for the mediocre team from Portage County.
Still think we should be able to handle them easily. Not lose to them.

Yikes this is embarrassing. I swear if we lose the one of the worst teams in the MAC, after losing to .500 Ohio. I'm not going to have much hope to the MAC tournament.

G5 definatley needs to be its own division. However, now all G5 universities want to resign themselves offically to a second tier; some are still convinced they will be the G5 team to make the 12-team field. It's going to be messy for years for the Power 4 (soon to be Power 2) too because of the number of universities who love the media revenue but cannot or will not compete for titles and playoff spots: 70% of the Big 10 will never be in contention. Would those teams drop down to complete with the G5 championship or stay home?
I always look at it like college basketball. Would I rather the Zips compete at the highest level and have a less than 1% of winning a championship or play at the second highest level and have a better chance at a meaningless championship? Youngstown State has 4 national titles and does anyone care? How many people can even name the FCS champion from last season? I'm sure more people know who won the AAC, Sun Belt and MAC last season.
Even if our program peaked when we won the MAC Championship or Idaho Potato bowl. To me personally I prefer that to a FCS playoff appearance or whatever. Just like I'd rather see the Zips basketball team make the NCAA tournament and get knocked out in the first round, than win a game in the NIT/CBI.

3) CJ McCollum wanted to play for Akron but we didn't have a scholarship open and KD didn't want to "push out" a player. Was the same class as Zeke...we would've had Zeke and CJ together for 4 years
One of the biggest "What ifs" in Akron Zips history. Right up there with Tyreek Hill committing to play at UA and then Bowden, rightfully changing his mind and turning him away.
Didn't Larry Nance Jr want to play for Akron too? Could we have had CJ, Nance and Zeke for a few years together? 😪

Shame on me, sorry, my bad. Okay, you're cursed. Not really.
One curse was mean to be broken that World Series because both teams couldn't lose lol.

I was just reading an old article. It mentioned that the Zips were nationally ranked during the 2012-2013 season. Does anyone know the highest ranking the Zips have received?
It also mentioned that the Zips in 2015-2016 were ranked 34th at one point.
I think they were in the 20s and then immediately lost the next game to Buffalo.
2012-2013 and 2019-2020 were the two teams I thought would legitimately have a shot at making a tourney run. Unfortunately Abreu got caught trying to accept a shipment of weed, the entire team got the flu and then in 2020 Covid happened. If anyone still doubts that NE Ohio sports are cursed, I don't know what to tell you...

The list of MAC teams that have decent football AND basketball programs is pretty short. UMass is not ever going back to the Calipari/Camby days but they'll hold up their end of MAC basketball and compete on a higher level than the directionals that have essentially given up on basketball.
It would be nice if the MAC could cut some of the dead weight. I honestly couldn't care less if the Zips never played one of the MAC directionals again. Replace them with some quality directionals like Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky.

appears so
A dozen posts on this page alone mocking a move that is a big step in the right direction for the MAC. We all want what's best for our Zips and since we're stuck in the MAC forever, we might as well get excited to see the conference get better and expand.
Some people just like to be miserable I guess.

Wanted to look around yesterday to see how UMass fans were feeling about this move. Most seem to think the A10 is dying and the MAC is a good move. I was surprised how many said it was a good stepping stone until they move to a bigger conference. WHAT? Not that we have much room to talk but the UMass football program has average like 2 wins a season for the past 10 years and the basketball program is very average.
Still view this a positive for the MAC. The conference needs some new blood and expanding it's footprint can't be a bad thing. Hopefully we see more schools added soon.

Yes, which I'm advocating for. The MAC needs to add 3 more programs in addition to UMass IMO to catch up with or pass the SBC.
How embarrassing is that the MAC needs to add teams to CATCH UP with the Sun Belt.
Middle Tennessee, UConn, Western Kentucky, Temple? Idk...

Duquesne lost by double digits to a ten win Fordham team last night.

Great game and atmosphere overall. A few quick thoughts:
- Probably the smallest Kent crowd I've ever seen at the JAR. Almost non-existent.
- Great to see Dawson finally get going. Him shooting at just a decent clip would be huge for this team.
- Teams are going right at Freeman, trying to get him in foul trouble. They know how important he is to us on both ends. With no real front court depth, he's got to find ways to stay on the court. We become very average when he's out.
- Loved seeing Thornton take it to the hoop aggressively a few times. He's far too passive on offense at times.
- Bummed we didn't see more of Tavari.
- I can't say enough about the leap Tribble has taken offensively. He shot 1-12 from deep last season and is currently 36% on 58 attempts.
- Payton has learned the hard way that sometimes it's better to keep your mouth shut. Freeman dominated him. He ended up with 14 but most seemed like they came when Enrique was sitting.
- I can very easily see a scenario where our 2024-25 season looks like Kent's this year. I'm going to enjoy every bit of this group and Freeman in particular while I have the chance.
- Speaking of Kent, there's a realistic scenario that they don't make it to Cleveland at all. They have Buffalo next (should be a win) but then have CMU at home and Ball State and Toledo on the road.
My favorite part of the game was when Payton made a very mediocre play and then flexed his arms like an idiot. Then the Zips went on like a 10-0 run. Is he still the best player in the MAC? Most of his points came from the free throw line or when Freeman just let him have a shot to avoid fouling. Trash.

I love how whenever Payton does something cocky it immediately leads to a big Akron run.

I'm excited to finally have a college football game to play again, but I know it will take a few years until they actually pay attention to schools like Akron. It took several years of playing in a generic stadium before they actually included InfoCision in the older games.

For some reason my ESPN+ stream won't load but I think I'm okay with that. On to the next one...

This might be an unpopular take, but I think we're just an average team in a bad conference.

At the end of the day, if you're still sore about the KD situation it's well past time to move on.
He's getting paid more money to coach a worse program with a non-existent fanbase. I think the Zips hit their ceiling with KD and it was time to move on. I couldn't care less that he took players with him. But his comments about having an easier path the the NCAA tourney with the Dukes rubbed me the wrong way. How many times has he made it since leaving Akron? Also pretending like they are Lebron's school now is hilarious.
Add on that I'm a lifelong Cleveland fan wired to hate everything Pittsburgh and the fact that I dated a girl from Duquesne when I was at UA. I have personal reasons to hate that school 😂.
-
Didn't Eastern Michigan have like a dozen people in the stands when we played them?
Also Duquesne not even being listed is hilarious to me. Same with Ohio State.

Hard to complain with a 15 point lead, but man the Zips really went cold. Going to need some intensity coming out of halftime or this could be the Miami game all over again.

Game 31- Western Michigan
in Akron Zips Basketball

I've heard of trap games....but a trap month? Man the Zips are just BAD right now. If they win a game in the MAC tournament I'd be shocked.
