We're very lucky to have this guy as our head coach...and damn the issue that lead to his emergency surgery sounds scary as hell.

I don't live in Akron anymore and haven't even thought about Eurogyro for over 10 years. Man...so many blurry memories of drunken nights visiting that place. Thanks for reminding me.

Interesting enough, UCF had script helmets this year that I thought looked nice because it was more refined and they were able fit a sword into the design. But it turns out they actually ripped it off from a high school team (Hickory Christian Academy), made a few tweaks and passed it off as their own. So I guess it could be worse.

If I remember correctly he pissed off enough Zips fans that some were ready to confront him in person. The internet tough guy probably figured it was best to shut his mouth. They definitely care more about the Zips than we care about them. Our rival is Kent. I couldn't care less about OU.

He must be friends with that Jacob Corrigan guy who worked for OU as like a media intern or something like 10 years ago. I remember he used to go out of his way to be a prick to Akron fans on social media and might have had an account here too? Must have been a real thorn since I still remember him by name after all these years. The best thing to do with this idiots is ignore them. Just save the receipts and fire back at them when Akron beats OU.

Felton has been the most overhyped rookie this season. People acted like he was the next coming of Reggie Bush. But he's slow and doesn't have great hands. Outside of 2-3 plays he hasn't done much. Jojo, while small, is faster has better hands and is tough. Living on the UA campus must have made him fearless.

Pitt and Iowa State are the only two P5 schools we've had come to Akron correct? That's the perfect level of competition, but also need to know that crowds will show up. SEC would be tough unless Moorhead can talk MSU or maybe someone like Mizzou/Vandy. BigTen has nice options with Indiana, Northwestern, Maryland, Rutgers and Illinois. I think Big12/ACC would be our best bet. After expansion you'll have Cincy, Houston and UCF. Plus schools like Syracuse, WF, Duke, GT, Pitt, BC, UNC, Kansas, WVU.

Press Conference Introducing Coach Moorhead (Thursday 10 am)

Can't imagine going home and telling my wife we'd be moving from Oregon to Akron to make $500,000 less every year. Pretty sure I'd be moving by myself. 😂 -
Press Conference Introducing Coach Moorhead (Thursday 10 am)

I still have no idea how Tom Arth and Rob Ianello got hired as HCs. How does a 9-13 record at Chattanooga get you a FBS head coaching job? How did anyone think he could be an improvement over Terry Bowden? who was a decent coach and had plenty of big-time winning HC experience. How does a WR coach from Notre Dame get a HC job? Especially when the Irish were coming off 3, 6 and 7 win seasons. I was a student at UA during that time, I had heard from practically everyone that Ianello was a huge prick and his wife was terrifying. People hate the Browns beat reporters (Grossi, MKC, Ruiter) and most of the time they deserve it. But at least they ask questions regardless of how dumb they usually are. There should be more people in the room that actually care about UA sports. -
Press Conference Introducing Coach Moorhead (Thursday 10 am)

He mentioned his son in college, but didn't he say something about having kids starting high school and wanted them to be able to stay at the same school without having to move again? -
Press Conference Introducing Coach Moorhead (Thursday 10 am)

It's nice to know he doesn't care much about the money or prestige of a school. He just wants to be a coach and be near his family. Hopefully this means he's here to stay for a long time. -

I can honestly say I've never heard him speak before, but I completely agree. Seems like an awesome leader. -
Joe Moorhead Officially Hired as Head Football Coach
akzipper replied to Dr Z's topic in Akron Zips Football
Interesting. Seems like a unique situation where new coach is hired, has a press conference and still goes back to coach in one last game with his former team. Not sure I've ever seen this happen before. But honestly maybe it happens more often with coordinators than I realize? I definitely like this better than having to wait until after the Alamo Bowl to find out he's been hired. Nothing bothers me more than coaches that make teams wait forever for an answer just to change their mind. Pretty sh***y move too for these guys (Kelly, Riley, etc) to bail on their guys before the biggest games of the season. While he's got a lot of work to do in Akron, I commend him for sticking with his guys until the end. Especially since they just lost their HC. -
Yeah still has ARoo at midfield, Akron and Zips in either endzone. It's been the same since InfoCision opened.

I feel the same way. Just like when the Browns hire a new coach. I'm always excited and all I hear about is how "this time feels different". Then it's really not and sometimes is worse. Luckily with Akron football the bar is so low, nobody will be calling for Moorhead to be fired after week 1. On paper they both Moorhead and Bowden had similar resumes. Bowden was more successful in SEC, but also took a huge break from coaching. Moorhead is younger and has more experience as a coordinator. There definitely was a similar buzz back then, regardless if Zips fans want to acknowledge it. The search that resulted in Bowden was a bit of a rollercoaster. I remember people spotting Jim Tressel at the Student Union and everyone thought UA was swinging for the fences. Then we found out he was just helping with the search process and we landed on Bowden. I remember being pleasantly surprised when he was hired, and thought the Zips would finally take the next step.

I always thought it was cool because regardless of what side of the arena you sit on it always reads the same. Unless of course you're behind the baskets, the Z is never upside down. The letter N has the same effect.

As a graphic designer it drives me crazy and yes, I probably care more about this stuff than the casual fan. The issue I have is that the Akron wordmark isn't a logo. It's a stock Nike font from their Uniform Builder site using their generic "Script" font. I'm assuming whoever was in charge of ordering the basketball uniforms a few years ago, went to that site and picked that font for the jerseys. This is perfectly okay and it happens all the time. Some examples: Unless you're Ohio State, Oregon, Syracuse, etc. You order basketball uniforms from a specific list of templates. The athletic budget for smaller schools can't afford to have custom uniforms designed and honestly Nike isn't really worried about what Akron, BG and Toledo are wearing. The issue is that someone important liked it so much they wanted to make it the official logo of a D1 school. Basically the equivalent of going into Microsoft word, picking a clipart image and using it as an official logo. Something that's done by lower level High Schools. The full kangaroo and Z logos looked awesome on the helmets and hope Miller and Guthrie take note.

Guess the good thing about ignoring Zips football for the past 3 seasons, I don't really get upset with these transfers.
-
Guthrie mentioned he wanted a former FBS head coach or a current coordinator. Moorhead fit both criteria and I'd assume since Getsy being a QB Coach right now he wasn't really a consideration. With only a few seasons as a coordinator at MSU. Just my guess.
-
Definitely seems like he's had a very short and odd career path. Crazy to think a guy with only one season as a WR coach at LSU was qualified to be the Offensive Coordinator of an NFL team.
-
Getsy (his OC at MSU and QB while at UA) would be a cool pick. Same with Charlie Frye. But it would be tough for them to leave their QB coach jobs in the NFL for their alma mater. I can dream though...

I'll even admit I didn't know much about Joe Moorhead until a week ago. I watch a decent amount of college football and remember a coordinator leaving PSU to coach MSU. But honestly couldn't tell you his name or what has happened to him since. Not saying it isn't a great hire for UA. But this isn't a household name coming in. On top of that if we reach the point we all hope to, how long will Moorhead be a Zip? How can you sit there and tell a 4-5* recruit to turn down P5 schools. Then join a MAC school that you are committed to turning around. Which, if that happens, means you'll be gone before he can graduate.
