I feel the same way. Just like when the Browns hire a new coach. I'm always excited and all I hear about is how "this time feels different". Then it's really not and sometimes is worse. Luckily with Akron football the bar is so low, nobody will be calling for Moorhead to be fired after week 1. On paper they both Moorhead and Bowden had similar resumes. Bowden was more successful in SEC, but also took a huge break from coaching. Moorhead is younger and has more experience as a coordinator. There definitely was a similar buzz back then, regardless if Zips fans want to acknowledge it. The search that resulted in Bowden was a bit of a rollercoaster. I remember people spotting Jim Tressel at the Student Union and everyone thought UA was swinging for the fences. Then we found out he was just helping with the search process and we landed on Bowden. I remember being pleasantly surprised when he was hired, and thought the Zips would finally take the next step.

I always thought it was cool because regardless of what side of the arena you sit on it always reads the same. Unless of course you're behind the baskets, the Z is never upside down. The letter N has the same effect.

As a graphic designer it drives me crazy and yes, I probably care more about this stuff than the casual fan. The issue I have is that the Akron wordmark isn't a logo. It's a stock Nike font from their Uniform Builder site using their generic "Script" font. I'm assuming whoever was in charge of ordering the basketball uniforms a few years ago, went to that site and picked that font for the jerseys. This is perfectly okay and it happens all the time. Some examples: Unless you're Ohio State, Oregon, Syracuse, etc. You order basketball uniforms from a specific list of templates. The athletic budget for smaller schools can't afford to have custom uniforms designed and honestly Nike isn't really worried about what Akron, BG and Toledo are wearing. The issue is that someone important liked it so much they wanted to make it the official logo of a D1 school. Basically the equivalent of going into Microsoft word, picking a clipart image and using it as an official logo. Something that's done by lower level High Schools. The full kangaroo and Z logos looked awesome on the helmets and hope Miller and Guthrie take note.

Guess the good thing about ignoring Zips football for the past 3 seasons, I don't really get upset with these transfers.
-
Guthrie mentioned he wanted a former FBS head coach or a current coordinator. Moorhead fit both criteria and I'd assume since Getsy being a QB Coach right now he wasn't really a consideration. With only a few seasons as a coordinator at MSU. Just my guess.
-
Definitely seems like he's had a very short and odd career path. Crazy to think a guy with only one season as a WR coach at LSU was qualified to be the Offensive Coordinator of an NFL team.
-
Getsy (his OC at MSU and QB while at UA) would be a cool pick. Same with Charlie Frye. But it would be tough for them to leave their QB coach jobs in the NFL for their alma mater. I can dream though...

I'll even admit I didn't know much about Joe Moorhead until a week ago. I watch a decent amount of college football and remember a coordinator leaving PSU to coach MSU. But honestly couldn't tell you his name or what has happened to him since. Not saying it isn't a great hire for UA. But this isn't a household name coming in. On top of that if we reach the point we all hope to, how long will Moorhead be a Zip? How can you sit there and tell a 4-5* recruit to turn down P5 schools. Then join a MAC school that you are committed to turning around. Which, if that happens, means you'll be gone before he can graduate.

Looks good on basketball jerseys... that's about it.

I think Moorhead and the Zips need to prove they can win before going after #1 rated prospects. I'm sure most prospects see Akron as a team that hasn't won anything significant ever, has small crowds/fanbases and realistically may never be able to make it to the playoffs. Would be tough to roll the dice.

The grand opening game against Morgan State was the only game where the atmosphere was actually fun. For a few hours the Zips actually felt like a big time school. All we need is a few good seasons and an exciting team. People will come. If schools like Coastal Carolina and Boise State can do it. Why not Akron?
-
IUP is in Indiana County PA. Luke Getsy was a coach at IUP. Getsy was OC for Mississippi State with Moorhead as HC. Getsy as OC for the Zips confirmed.
-
I think we all need to message Guthrie and let him know this needs to happen. He seems to really care about what the fans want. If we're annoying enough about it maybe he'll make the switch.

I get more mad every time I see that cursive Akron. It's just so terrible.
-
Definitely agree with Herbstreit. Oregon looks like a team that's distracted by coaching changes/rumors. Even if they claimed to be focused on this game. It's human nature to think ahead to your future. I'd assume most players don't know what the hell will happen after this game. I feel like I'm watching the Browns. Unmotivated underperforming offense that falls apart when the run game is shut down. When forced to throw, the passes are all short and lots of drops.

I love response on twitter. So many "Why Akron?" "Akron sucks, he can do better!" "Should have waited for a better job!" "Am I missing something?!" Yeah you are missing something. Akron is a nice f'n school. We have a great stadium and fans that deserve to watch winning football. Even one Oregon fan chimed in with: If Moorhead was that bad shouldn't he be taking a "step down"? There are just so many angry people on social media that rant to their 30 followers, while hiding behind a keyboard. Just because a school's football team has been bad, doesn't mean they deserve to suck forever. There's always been an arrogance to fans of "big" schools. They love to make fun of schools like Akron and when something goes well for the underdogs, they get mad.

I definitely felt a similar buzz when Bowden was hired and thought he was a surprisingly great hire for Akron. Looking back his resume was actually just as impressive as Moorhead, if not more. 6 winning seasons at Auburn and lots of winning at FCS schools. Both spent time at UA as assistant coaches. Lot's of similarities, but I hope Moorhead can help us take the next step. It pains me to say I haven't really cared about Akron football for like 4 seasons. Maybe visiting ZipsNation every couple of months, if that, just to see what everyone thought about the basketball teams. Now I find myself checking in every day. Instead of wasting my time reading about the joke that has become of the Browns season and whatever is left of the Cleveland baseball team. I can't believe I'm relying on the Zips football team for positive news, but here we are.

Frye or Getsy as OC would be pretty awesome. Not sure they'd leave the NFL for their alma mater, but I'd love to see it.
-
"Former Akron OC expected to be named new Akron head coach" That just doesn't sound as impressive. 😂
-
I can't think of a less stressful job in college football than Akron. The bar is just so low, and if you make a bad decision during a game the 10 fans in the stands probably won't even complain. Give us like 6+ wins every season and you'll have a statue outside the stadium.
-
I feel the same way. Although it's weird that in November I care more about who Akron will hire, than I do about whatever the Browns are doing. Didn't expect that going into this season. Guess I'd just like to see something positive happen after two of my teams have wasted seasons.
-
What does this mean?
-
So there's no question they want a OC from a successful big time program. Much better route than rolling the dice on a small school HC. But JD Brookhart was a good OC for Pitt so who the hell knows...
-
I get made fun of frequently by friends and family because they are all fans of teams like Penn State, Ohio State, Pitt, etc. People ask me who my college team is and it will always be Akron. My response is always that I'd rather watch the Zips lose every game than root for some random school I have no connection to (which most "big schools" fans do not). I got a but tipsy watching the Zips win the National Championship in soccer in the packed Barley House and make a few NCAA basketball appearances during my time there. Held the trophy, talked to Faust, Dambrot, Porter and Bowden on different occasions. I feel like being an Akron fan, I appreciate the small victories so much more. OSU fans are ready to jump of bridges because they lost to Michigan. The Zips barely lost to the Wolverines and it was probably my favorite Zips football memory.

Even as an Akron fan and proud alum, I can't imagine turning down a salary of over a million dollars to leave Oregon and coach in front of a few hundred fans every Saturday.
