2020-2021 Akron Zips Basketball- Looking Forward
LZIp replied to clarkwgriswold's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Of course the one game we might me able to actually attend this season falls over Thanksgiving. -
Seems like just keeping it close to the vest for the first game for whatever competitive advantage that may come from it. Lord knows we'll need it.

no depth chart for us https://gozips.com/documents/2020/10/30//game1_akron_wmu_notes_11_4_20.pdf?id=14943

These are the type of players Arth is bringing in to the program and University. Hopefully having some patience (whether forced due to financial reasons or not) will pay off. We need to be looking long game, not immediate/temporary results, if we want to be a perennial MAC contender.

a depth chart would be nice..so many new faces

While the Buckeye 8 is not on the level of some of the leagues in Northeast Ohio, its definitely a few steps above the Malvern-like competition B&G mentioned, which is where Graves came from prior to SVSM. There have been players go to Michigan, WVU, and Purdue, as well as MAC schools, for football in recent years. One of them is actually in the NFL (Colton McKivtiz). Some other players that came from these schools include Nate Davis, Jose Davis, Tim Spencer, Joey Galloway. There are some athletes that come out of there, though not so much on the basketball side. I assume Ford being from Cambridge tipped us off to him and he did enough in AAU to warrant an offer. Could be a sleeper type of prospect who went under the radar, could be a bust. Here's to hoping he's a hidden gem..i know I'll be rooting for him being a fan of the Zips and a native of the area.

Competition at the most important position is always good. Looks like Zagorski may be familiar with him from his time at EKU as they were recruiting him out of HS. I’d probably prefer an Ian Kipp from Mentor (I don’t think they’ll take any other QBs with Jankowski and now him), but we need to make sure we have somebody ready to play next year if the young QBs don’t develop as expected.
-
That’s too unfortunate. I remember him as well and was excited when he committed to Akron.

I don't see much potential this year, unfortunately. Still too young and short-handed scholarship wise. We've got 1 patched together class and then one full class on campus so far. I just want to win a damn game this season...it won't be easy. Then again this season has already shown to be pretty unpredictable looking at the rest of college football thus far. Next season is when expectations start for Arth in my eyes. Need to get around .500 to prove he can develop players and move us in the right direction.

Was French actually employed by UA? -
A little bit of a sloppy preview (like Hayes-Patrick being recruited by Bowden), but it's something. https://www.hustlebelt.com/2020/10/19/21520563/mid-american-conference-football-key-storylines-akron-zips-2020

This year apparently doesn't count against a year of eligibility for anybody no matter how much they play. So next year with the 25 annual scholarship limit (which really screws over programs like us that aren't stable) we could theoretically get up to 93. However, other schools could be at 110...

Updated scholarship chart based on what I know. If anyone knows anything else for certain, please let me know. Figure this is about as updated a roster as we'll get. A couple names missing that we haven't previously heard about - Hunter Corne and Justin Sampson. I also believe I heard on Zips live last week that Kato is injured and likely won't be healthy to start the season. Down to as little as 68 scholarship players.... so we can have fans inside in a small basketball arena but not outside in a football stadium...got it. -
Respectable move by Proenza

yeah..247 is incredibly inaccurate when it comes to smaller programs.
-
You got east and west mixed up bud. Miami, Ohio, Buffalo, and Kent all had winning records last year and I believe all of them should solid again.
-
We just need to win a damn game this season, just 1 to see some damn progress. Unfortunately the tides have turned and now the east is stronger than the west, IMO so it won't be easy. Anybody who plays this year will not have it count against their eligibility...so everyone gets an extra year. It will be interesting to see what the NCAA does here. 85 is the current scholarship max, but that will obviously go up temporarily. How long will it go up for/when will schools have to be back down to 85 is the real question? If it stays at 85 (which it should), there's effectively going to be a whole year of student athletes who lose the chance to play football at the collegiate level, whether its all done in one year or smoothed out over multiple years.

Good stuff B&G. Based on the limited info I've heard/observed, the only change I'd make if I had to make a prediction would be to swap out Herring for redshirt freshman Ryan Beckman. Coaches/players have been mentioning him in interviews. I also saw his getting some reps with the other 4 in one of the videos released. This unit will surely take some lumps in this "season", but should be a group that will grow together and be a real strength of the team in a few years. I also think Gest may be the starter at RB (at least to start the season) based on what I'm seeing in videos. I'd still expect him and Dollard to split carries unless one really separates themselves from the other though so i'm not sure it really matters.
