Guys are *really* asking why a school would go after Terry Bowden? Come on, you're better than that. Name aside, I'd think you're familiar with his record and success. And if you truly don't believe that his hiring at UA would be welcomed tenfold locally, over PW, then you were probably among those calling for a two-point conversion instead of overtime.
-
It was him. It was regarding local recruits and how it'd essentially be foolish to assume that they'd even consider somewhere like akron. He was a total a-hole in the comments section and was insanely unprofessional. Wow. Unprofessional doesn't even begin to describe GT's comment. Wasn't this guy the movie critic? Is he even qualified for this beat?

In other news, Kansas secures its place in the BCS Bottom 10 indefinitely.

ITZ, in all fairness, Winters has very "tacit" support, only because so many view his hiring as inevitable. You should know that any one of us would much rather a more charismatic difference-maker be hired. But since that's unlikely, we're forced to accept that your guy is coming instead. Hope you're not expecting any ticker-tape parades, or even a mild pep-rally on campus. Paul just doesn't engender that kind of response. And sadly, with the pathetic state of affairs at UA and the morbid football program, a "ticker-tape" type hire is exactly what we needed. We get it...you played for the guy, you know the guy, and you want the guy here. We'll accept it, but PW is most certainly not #1 on the list of a majority of ZNO posters. That much was clear on Tressel Rumor Day. And trust me, if Stoops or Bowden were more heavily rumored to be here, this board would drop the "PW's the Guy" talk faster than iCoach could signal for a 4th quarter field goal with his team trailing 43-0.

Is Our Head Coach "Search" a Sham?
ZipRoo replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
Well, that cinches the argument. If GP1 is adamantly "for" the hire of PW, then I'm steadfastly against it. Obvious reasons. When I see the names Narduzzi and Stoops in the mix, I have to believe casual fans would be more interested in Zips football with either of those two....as opposed to a little-known former running back who's been hidden away in Detroit, of all places, for a decade. Just sayin'. I still hold out blind-hope that TW and the Tressel-inspired search committee will somehow spring a huge surprise on us...a coach that will make the city and campus immediately sit up and take note. Once again, I'd offer Terry Bowden the moon. -
Is Our Head Coach "Search" a Sham?

I'm torn. I agree that P. Withers has done a great job at WaynesWorld. But then I double-click, and seriously question whether this is a guy who will excite anyone in Akron besides InTheZone. Don't think too many families are gonna say, "Hey, P. Withers is at Akron. Let's get down to the Info." He's just not that kind of hire. And I really wonder if Akron needs more than what he offers...this time around. -

Z-TV will have the scoop a week later. -
Amen. A no-brainer, Charlie. Reunite "the Irish team" in Kansas...and do it yesterday. Better snatch up your protoge` before he gets put to work in a non-recruiting role at UA's Wayne Co. branch. Those recruiting skills of his are off the charts, and he's the man you need.

Is Our Head Coach "Search" a Sham?

Might it be a moot point? Someone one here posted that TW's contract is up in Sept. and that it would not be renewed. Any truth (hopefully)? -
WHO is the "mystery" fourth candidate, whose name is not confirmed? Anyone we should be "excited" about? Geez, I'd hope that a *nationwide search* would produce more than the Usual Suspects identified already.
-
Scary. They were awful. Certainly hope a new coach can light a fire under them and motivate underachievers to actually "compete."
-
HA! Weis and Ianello deserve each other. Weis is no more fit to be a head coach than I am.
-
Bump!
-
Who interviewed Ianello for a head coaching job before Akron did, who interviewed Brookhart for a head coaching job before Akron did? Who is interviewing Winters? I would say if we hire somebody that was considered for a HC job, YouTube is taking a step. Of course, no one considered or interviewed either JD or Ianello. Why would they? Akron is just like the Indians and Browns, always trying to "out-think" themselves in trades, free agent signings and coaching/managerial hires, always believing they "know better than everyone else," instead of just making the sure-fire moves. Really gets old.

UA moved pretty quickly on that new job for iCoach. He's serving hors d'uerves to wealthy Z-Fund donors at the Martin Center.
-
From what we saw on the field, are you sure those weren't gerbals? I want that guy and his thinking as far as away from the UA football scene as humanly possible.
-
The only podium speech I ever want to see Wistrcill give is his resignation.
-
Good heavens, you mean the guy could actually still be lurking on campus somewhere?! Ughhh. Hey, I'm fine with Gerry Faust still around...he's a great guy and people love talking with him. But sweet mercy, Ianello?? We need to offer up some job suggestions of where UA could "place" him to work off that $300K per year. I'm thinking picking up cigarette butts at some remote satellite branch.

You and U of A need to get out of the 80's with your marketing. Plenty of firms can create a great campaign for minimal cost. I'm not laying out a plan here for free, but it has been done successfully PLENTY of times with a lot worse product (believe it or not). How about a billboard with a series of B&W mug shots ("The Usual Suspects"): Faust, Owens, JD, Ianello.
-
RE: If you told me I had to hire Paul Winters, I would put together a massive marketing campaign around the idea that "Akron is Bringing one of it's own home" I would put his face everywhere. But judging by the history of our football marketing (excluding Waddell who got it), it won't happen. Yes, the wisdom in sticking Ianello's (shall we say) "questionable" mug on a billboard or schedule--in hindsight, foresight, or any other version of SIGHT you wanna mention--was, uh....lacking any form of intelligence. Better leave it at that. :/

Ummm.... he's never turned us down? Larry Kehres on the other hand has turned a lot of people down, Can't State multiple times. He's never leaving Mount Union. Plus, the ways a D3 program, with no scholarship component and no spring practice etc., is built, is a completely different story than the other 3 divisions. I'm not sure Kehres would even have the know how on how to get it done at this level, and he probably realizes that. I'm fairly certain Akron made overtures, if not an offer, before they hired J.D. Pluto was always pushing for it, too. Sure, things operate differently at D-1 than at D-3, but season after season after season of National Championships and undefeated records says a whole lot about your coaching and the way you do things. Akron would've been foolish to have never approached Kehres. I'd be curious to know Tressel's thoughts on Kehres and coaching at D-3 vs. D-1, having moved up from D-2 himself with such success. Some guys will likely tell you: If you're a winner, it doesn't matter what level you're coaching at...success will follow you.
-
I'm sure he turn us down once again....but I'm curious about your thoughts on Larry Kehres from Mt. Union. Is he the "exception" you'd make, dipping as low as D-3? Hiring a legendary coach with the highest winning percentage in the history of college football would seem like a no-brainer for Akron.

But he was a buffoon in almost every sense.
