Any clown can hire the most-familiar name they hear. After the name "Tressel," no other "name" carries any weight in Akron Ohio. Pelini? Polian? Bowden? Have all three of them walk through downtown Akron for 10 days, wearing one of those "HELLO MY NAME IS" stickers on their shirt, and see if one person recognizes them. Please Please Please... If Zach starts the ant-______ shit prior to the new coach doing anything just because he did not like the hire, ban him from the site. Let's not poison the new guy before he gets started.

Agreed...no coach other than JT will put butts in seats. Any other coach will have to do it the old fashioned way...winning.
-
You just said it all. Johnny Unitas could not have succeeded behind that offensive line. A QB is not too effective when he spends most of the game on his back looking up. Against WMU...they rushed 3 guys. We have 5 on the line and one back who stayed in for blocking. 2 guys got to Moore before he could set up. That is incredible. Even if you just stand in someone’s way you will slow them down. Pathetic play. I am not sure that the whole team quit on Ianello...but I think the O line did for sure. Any new coach will have trouble next year with the lines. 10 guys graduate and most on the O line were seniors.

I have heard that he is a good kid and a decent student that was raised in a broken family and lacked discipline. This "mistake" makes the "good guy" part suspect. If he can recover, he will need to be all the more diligent and prove himself to the team and KD. One thing for sure...KD and the team will always have a plan "B" now. Very disappointing. Hopefully he gets his act together. He has a great opportunity to make something of himself and has a coach and school that will assist...but the burden will be on him. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. Very sad day...most of those I know who follow the program had very high hopes and had nothing but good things to say about him.

"People spend to much time thinking about the past. Whatever else it is...it is gone. The best is yet to come, do it well." Time to move on. We have a great future ahead of us....let's get behind the new coach (whomever is chosen) in a BIG way. No one is perfect and they will make some mistakes or make decisions that do not fit what everyone wants or expects. We need to get past that and look at the positives. No more "can't support this guy" even before he hires one coach. No matter if he is your first choice or someone you are against...we need everyone’s support. Ask CP...he will tell you that student/fan support is felt by the team. We will know soon enough if he fails and we can discuss that after next season. No one thinks "the cupboard is not bare" this time. Give the new guy a little time. We should see improvement by the end of next year. But we have to rebuild both lines and that will be very difficult in one year. 10 players are graduating from the lines...IMO that should be the next coaches highest priority. Go Zips!!!

If he says anything (kills it), it should come when JT is no longer a candidate. Since we are not privy to what is really going on...we can only speculate and wait. If Tressel were to come here...it will happen this week. So...we should all be patient and view any "information" skeptically.

Now I'm no expert on all the things UA's Board of Trustees does, but there's a simple description on UA's website: The University of Akron's Board of Trustees is the governing body for The University of Akron, pursuant to Ohio Revised Code 3359.01. The Board is composed of 11 members—9 voting members and 2 nonvoting student members—who are appointed by the Governor of Ohio with the advice and consent of the State Senate. Trustees are appointed to a nine-year term of office, with the exception of student Trustees who are appointed to a two-year term. The Board of Trustees has been charged by the Ohio Legislature (Ohio Revised Code 3359.03 and 3359.04) with: selecting and appointing the president; setting the operating budget; approving personnel appointments; granting all degrees awarded by the University, including honorary degrees; establishing tuition and fee rates; approving contracts; and approving all rules, regulations, curriculum changes, new programs and degrees at The University of Akron. The bolded parts would seem to relate to things involved with a major hiring. So it's not unreasonable to think that the UA Board of Trustees would be presented in this meeting with a report on any previous UA meetings with someone like Jim Tressel, and whether anything further was required moving forward. After reporting out to the Board of Trustees and fully informing them of all details, it's not unreasonable to expect that any significant news might also be shared with the public. So I think it's fair for all the zero percenters and all the hundred percenters to reign in their ponies and wait just a few more hours to see what official word comes out after the Board of Trustees executive session, which, by the way is private and not streamed on the web as regular public sessions are. Yea...but we have a guy from Wadsworth willing to accidently barge in

The thing that would most concern me about Campbell is his age. 32 is awfully young to be a head coach at an FBS school. The upside with him is the ridiculous numbers Toledo's offense has put up since he's been in charge. Exciting offenses lure exciting players. The "great recruiter" comparison to iCoach isn't fair IMO. Matt has had success recruiting IN THE MAC. All in all, he's not my 1st choice by a long shot. I just think he's shown enough talent at a young age to justify a look. +1 Not my frst choice...but way ahead of old retreads like Ericson and Bowden. IMO I want someone who WANTS to be HERE. I think Campbell is close enough in that regard.

Chuck Martin http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Martin_...rican_football) Paul Winters http://wsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=328 Matt Campbell http://www.utrockets.com/ViewArticle.dbml?...TCLID=204987252 Hugh Freeze http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_Freeze Willie Fritz http://www.ucmo.edu/athletics/football/coa...illie_fritz.cfm Paul Chryst http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Chryst Martin is an enigma to me...why has not gotten an opportunity sooner?? Winters is my second choice to JT Campbell is considered an excellent recrruiter...at the MAC level and should have a good list to work from immediately. But we probably would suffer while got up to speed as HC. Freeze & Fritz are guys who have some success but are not Ohio or Midwest guys. Next... Chryst is interesting. But do we want another "Wisconsin" model?? I would be happy with Martin or Winters and OK with Campbell...but he would be another project.

Unless there is an officail annoucement one way or another...I will continue to hold out some hope. All the speculation is amusing and makes for good reading If something does not break by this Friday...then I will assume we tried but could not get it done. Next....

...first hand known source. More hands...less reliable

I believe this is a distinct possibility. UA may just be sitting back, being silent & simply enjoying the attention right now. However, I think the fallout would be too negative were we all to eventually learn that JT was never a serious candidate, or, let alone, a candidate at all & the UofA was just leading everyone on. So, I'm going with JT being a very real, perhaps even likely, possibility right now. I think he is a serious candidate. But if they sign him there will be a shit storm. NCAA baggage, money, priorities and GP1. There will be many who will disagree vehemently and loudly. What impact will paying JT 2-3 times KD and CP have?? I think there is nothing but upside for the football program but many other potential issues we have to deal with that could be harmful to the UofA. Would you take JT if it eventually drove away CP?? Lots of issues. This debate is good. It won't be JT that drives away Porter. CP is more likely to be "lured" away by a huge salary coaching in the pros. Not saying it would. I really think it would have a positive impact on the soccer program. But I heard at times that CP likes that Akron is not a football school and soccer has a higher profile here. My point is...there are lots of issues to consider.

Tressel announcement tomorrow...mark it down

I'll bet GP1 needs a diaper right about now. Depends

How many times do people in-the-know have to say it: Money is not an issue here. Folks were quivvering over a $350K paycheck to R.I. Understand this: UA has socked well over $150-million into athletic facilities (JAR, InfoCision, soccer stadium, practice facility). Athletics is a MAJOR priority for this administration. Paying a man who can enhance the investment is a no-brainer. Ianello lost millions for the school in only two years. Tressel will put UA athletics back on the map and in the black. There is a LOT of alumni money in this area, rest assured. It can be pried loose when the school makes an impact move such as this that will turn the corner for UA. LOL Have yet to hear anyone in the know say that money was not important or an issue.

I disagree. Their silence does not mean that the rumors or true or false. I think the the UofA and TW have planned this debate and even encouraged it. If the highest salary in the MAC is 500K and we pay JT 750K… what will people think??? What if the # is 1M?? or 2M or more?? What will people think?? Will there be alumni who will help pay the cost because I don't think they are intending the students to pay with increased fees. THAT would alienate and doom JT. If there is a possibility (and I think there is) I think this debate is a test of the waters to see what the appetite the students, alumni and big donors have for JT and the baggage he may bring with him....and the cost we will have to pay. One thing for sure...if JT does not happen this week....it will not happen IMO.

Look at the Soccer abd Bball programs. the Big East will do nicely for me. Will be an upgrade for all programs with the caveat that the football side is fragile. If Tressel did come...the MAC would start to improve as well so we would have more options. I hate CUSA....I hope that is never a consideration.

Detroit has an RPI of 281 with a record of 1-4 with their only win being a 1 pointer over Austin Peay. I am sorry GOZIPS but that win is not as impressive as you think it is. Frenchie also mentioned that Detroit was missing their main big man & had already played 3 games last week and so were a little gassed. Actually...I think Dambrot said that just after the game.

Miami had to hire a coach after Haywood left after 2 years. Many of the candidates that Haywood beat out were on the list the second time. These candidates were already vetted so the process on those candidates was quick. The same will hold true for Akron. Tressel will take little vetting....it is more a legal issue and I am sure they have already gone down that path. Winters and Fickell have both been vetted so the process for them will be quick. The 3-5 new guys will be where the time is spent. But my sense is they want to get this done quickly so the new guy can get on the street recruiting. But they have to make sure they do their due diligence. Here is my wish list in order: 1. Tressel A+ 2. Winters A 3. Chuck Martin A- 4. Matt Campbell B+ 5. Luke Fickell C+ And the list could change with new information and availability.
-
I am intrigued by Campbell. he is considered a good recruiter at the MAC level. A NE Ohio guy, an OC with experience from the OL point of view (our weakest area this past year). My only concern is that he will have some of the same learning issues that Ianello had. maybe he can learn quickly. The really positive thing is...he has been recruiting MAC quality kids for 4 years now and must have good relationships with Ohio coaches and have a list to recruit from for 2012. He would make my list...but would not be the top choice....although the interview and vetting process could change that.

Doesn't sound like the same-old-same-old to me. Go Zips. I will support the team and be there for many games

I may be in the minority....but I think AA would be better as the back-up PG. That won't happen anytime soon as DI is not ready. But DI is a very good defender. In any case...I can see lots of different matchups this season. But I always want one of Nitro or Walsh on the floor at all times. I also like the chemistry between Tree and Harney...when Tree plays I think Harney should be on the floor too. Harney will get many more minutes than Tree at this stage,...I think he has the highest ceiling of any player we have. Both Tree and Harney need to put in more work if they want to be elite players. I think both will. I really like the potenial of this team. But I fear there will be times when look out of sync and awful as they develop.

I have been privileged to attend many games in a friend's suite since the stadium opened. They feel that it has been a complete waste of money. Food and drink only go so far. When going to a game--in a luxury suite--is a dreaded weekly burden, something needs to change. My friends and I cannot and will not tolerate another game of Ianello-ball. So, personally speaking, I know of tens of thousands of dollars that the coach is ALREADY costing UA. Not to mention the empty stands and many other suite owners whose renewal notices will go unreturned. College football is a big business. UA better realize that and get in the game....or get out altogether. They're putting a coach and product on the field that's like milquetoaste compared to Cardinal Mooney, Chagrin Falls, Mentor, St. V. It's pathetic, Luis. College is about EDUCATION. If football is all about big business then it should be left to those willing to take financial risk for financial reward. You seem to be OK with others footing the bill in all things. The university to provide your entertainment and your friends to provide access that entertainment. Your attitude is exactly what is wrong with society today. "Give me", "Provide it for me", "I/we deserve it" Ridiculous post. You missed the entire point. How much revenue is UA going to lose holding onto The Grim Reaper as head coach? College may be about education, but college football has nothing to do with education and everything to do with entertainment and revenue generation. I simply don't understand how UA puts ANY butts in the seats other than parents/family anymore. You talk about financial risk. How about the financial risk of building a 68 million dollar football stadium without the ability to sell any tickets to events held there? You're OK with that? You're OK with suite/box subscribers walking away? Football in the MAC generates REVENUE but not INCOME. YES...I am OK suite/box subscribers walking away rather than asking students to subsidize their entertainment. College football is just not that important. Colleges should NOT be in business to provide entertainment. Sorry...you just don't get it. Sports are intended to enhance the student experience. But not at any cost. Mount Union, Xavier, Dayton and other schools have great student experience and don’t ask its students to subsidize football for the entertainment of a few fans. The ship you wish for sailed long ago. FBS college football is almost entirely about revenue generation. While I would agree that maybe it shouldn't be so, this is a FBS program operating in a FBS league. You can advocate that UA should perhaps go small-time in football (aren't we there already?) but UA obviously hasn't figured out what it wants to be. They have spent money on facilities as if they would like to be a larger FBS program and have yet failed to do ANYTHING which would allow for additional revenue generation to support those moves. What exactly is the point of a 68 million dollar stadium? How do you pay for that facility? Do you believe that the advocates for its creation pointed to "enhanced student experience" alone as justification? How much "additional revenue" was anticipated through luxury box sales, catering, team shop sales, tickets, etc? If the Doug Snyder vision were uniformly applied the team would be FCS or smaller, it would play in a stadium seating 10K and would just be a nice little adjunct to Fall weekends. Come to think of it, that would actually be a gigantic improvement over where the program is right now, but still, that's not what UA appeared to be going for when the whole Infocision thing started. Now that the facilities are built and as long as UA is FBS, they must generate revenue. You wish it weren't so, but someone has to pay, and "revenue generators" sure as hell aren't lining up right now are they? The 68M for the Info was paid for by donations...not student fees. Also...a big reason WAS student experience. The Rubber Bowl was to far away to add anything to student experience. Also...the cost of maintaining the Rubber Bowl was cost prohibitive. If we wanted to stay in the MAC and have football, a new stadium had to be built. The real decision was how big and how much. But part of that 68M went to build a facility that would house more than just football. I am more than OK with private money being donated to improve facilities....but students should never be asked to foot the bill. They spend $1,200 per year (assuming just 2 semesters) in student fees to subsidize athletics. I don't believe that is money well spent and I certainly don't think they should spend more. I have an accounting and finance degree…so I guess you can count me as one who considers the cost of things and who pays.
