https://www.socceramerica.com/publications/article/76368/2018-mls-superdraft-ranking-the-top-23-pre-combin.html another publication raving about Joao...the best technically...and the best tactically and I love the phrase....Akron's "beautiful game" 3. DF/MF Joao Moutinho (Akron, Portugal) FR-GA The most technically and tactically gifted player in the class. His left foot is so smooth and was a master at starting the attack in Akron's "beautiful game" scheme as a center back. When called upon to challenge for aerial duels and make plays defensively, he was always up to task. Can play anywhere on the field -- literally -- and be very effective. Will fit in well for teams that thrive in possession and switching the point of attack as his ability make creative plays against the grain with pin point pass or savvy dribble is extraordinary.

Could Joao end up with the LA Galaxy? https://www.lagalaxy.com/post/2018/01/12/la-galaxy-insiders-five-players-watch-2018-mls-combine

article from atlanta united site....that has nice words about Sam https://www.dirtysouthsoccer.com/2018/1/9/16863072/preview-of-the-2018-mls-superdraft Sam Gainford - Akron University - W Gainford is a forward from Liverpool, England. He was apart of the Liverpool academy from the age of 10 up until moving to the U.S for college, playing at each youth level up to u18. He is a very versatile forward who is capable of playing anywhere across the front line and attacking midfield. Gainford finished his career at Akron with 25 goals and 17 assists, with his best season being his last as he scored 10 and assisted on 5. He would also fit in well with the attacking group in ATL since he so dynamic and versatile.

Fernando Pina transferred to Coastal Carolina (if my memory is correct) after Jake outworked him in practice. When the list was started, zip_ME87 and I were trying to tie to the 32 number that showed up on the zip web site. Clearly, the zip web site list would not include the 3 names that have been brought up. Jesus "Chino" Perez is someone who could be playing in the USL 2 years from now but I would not consider him a zip as he transferred after his freshman year. let's not lose sight of the fact.....that 32 is an incredible number since 2016. Let's celebrate the large number of zips in the pros.....there are some on the list that were at Akron for 1 semester....and many more that left Akron with a college degree. I have been impressed by Jonathan Lewis, who was only at Akron for 1 semester but Jonathan passionately supported the zips this past year.

Without a shadow of a doubt, Victor will always be on every list when I think of pro soccer players from the U of A. Tremendous student athlete. Victor is very proud to be a graduate of the University of Akron. Victor was a huge part of the final four team in 2015 as well as being all MAC in 2013 and 2014. It angers me greatly when the athletic department does not include Victor in articles like the one below. Victor had an excellent first season with the Riverhounds and he will do great things in the business world when his soccer career comes to an end. Very hard working, smart young man. http://www.gozips.com/news/2017/7/12/mens-soccer-zips-in-the-pros-7-12-17.aspx?path=msoc

With school starting on Tuesday January 16, hopefully, there will be an announcement this week of the new players that will join the team in the spring. Should be exciting .

https://www.topdrawersoccer.com/college-soccer-articles/2018-mls-draft-big-board:-version-10_aid43653 6 zips in Travis Clark's top 50...... glad that he has Stuart on his list....a darn shame.....that Stuart was not on combine invite list

Best wishes to Joao. At the beginning of this past season, I thought that the zips would lose in the NCAA round of 32 because I did not know what to expect from the 2 center backs. I had no idea that Joao would be the best player on the team that Daniel Strachan would also be outstanding. The 2 great freshman center DB's propelled this team to the final four. Thank you for everything , Joao and do super in MLS.

Nice comments about JLew in this article http://lastwordonsoccer.com/2017/12/29/second-annual-nycfc-bestie-awards/ The “Fearless” Bestie – Jonathan Lewis When NYCFC picked the Akron winger in the 2017 draft, I immediately contacted head coach Jared Embick for the skinny on the Plantation, FL native. And Coach Embick was effusive. “Best winger in the draft” he said. “Incredible speed.” “You won’t be sorry.” And indeed he was all those things. But he was also something I was not expecting: fearless. He would run right at defenders, daring them to try to take the ball from him. That was a revelation, and one only hopes we see more of it in years to come.

Stuart mentioned in this article about snubs https://www.topdrawersoccer.com/college-soccer-articles/six-mls-combine-snubs_aid43603 F Stuart Holthusen, Akron Perhaps Holthusen’s exclusion is down to Zips fatigue – there are already five players invited to the combine from the College Cup side – though Holthusen, a New Zealand youth international who finished the season on fire, should get a chance to play in front of MLS coaches. While he lacks the physical traits that lays the base for what MLS teams value, Holthusen is a savvy player and good finisher that can find space on the field in front of goal.
