Another one bites the dust (Aurora OL Troy Watson)

Link It's a no brainer of course, but it's nice to see the big guy getting some early recognition.

Seems like a good hire to me as well.

Zips to face Huggins this year
johnnyzip84 replied to ZipGoTheZippers!'s topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Wonder no more. There is no chance WVA ever comes to the JAR. K.e.n.t. fans have a better chance of having a felon-free roster. We took this game because WVA waved a bunch of money around. We can only wave coupons for $1 hot dogs in front of Huggins. That's not enough. More than likely it is just a 1 off game with WVU ponying up some cash to bring in the Zips. Best case scenario would be a 2 for 1 or 3 for 1 kind of scenario with us eventually getting a return game at the Q, but that is highly, HIGHLY unlikely. Think of it as being this years equivalent of last seasons Minnesota game. I'll be more clear. I spoke to a coach. West Virginia is not traveling to Akron. Ever. Maybe it's a 4 for 1 or 5 for 1 then. -

Very cool! The person I'm most happy for is Nitro. He has to be thrilled! And since I have a brother who graduated from WVU (he was there when Huggins played), I'm thinking road trip -
That's a very good point, Hilltopper. It looks like a new HC will be named soon and Rembielak remains among the names being mentioned.

Some regional tidbits; Massillon Washington High School leased the Hamilton Tiger-Cats logo for a couple of years logo and Montreal's Molson Stadium has benches from the old Pitt Stadium Pitt benches. Good stuff on the Pitt benches! I went to Pitt Stadium quite a few times, the last being this rain-soaked debacle. When our kicker (I believe it was the usually reliable Zach Derr) missed an early FG, one had the feeling the Zips would struggle to put points on the board that day.

Former Can't State HC Martin makes headlines
johnnyzip84 replied to Hilltopper's topic in Akron Zips Football
Doogie is at New Mexico State. Since I have visited twice, and will much more, since the Futbol Zips were @ the Lobos Tourney in 2008, I can vouch for what GoZips had to say. There isn't even a sign on the freeway pointing towards Santa Fe when you need to turn -- I ended up halfway to Las Vegas (New Mexico!) I wanted to write a letter to the newspaper suggesting the state visitors' motto be "Come to New Mexico and Get Lost". But, once I arrived in "El Norte", I finally understood why they want El Gringo to keep out. BTW -- Dougie's team opens their schedule at home vs the BobKittens. They'll likely get wiped, regardless of the inside info. And, I got free donuts off that (1987?) UNM victory courtesy of my boss, a Lobo alum. Good memory, Z.I.P.! Looks like both victories (Lobo/Aggie) occured in 1988. And look what else happened that year. Old Gerry poured it on The Vest (in Youngstown no less!). Your link shows the game was played in Akron. I'm not sure which game you mean. Six or seven posts ago, I talked about the NMSU game being at the Rubber Bowl and the UNM game being in New Mexico. In my last post, I mentioned Gerry's win over The Vest occurring in Youngstown. The link confirms each of these locations. -

....and nicely will not be calling the plays. But....he may be making the on-field decisions. I hope Nicely reads this stuff and is embarrased. If not...then he is not our guy. One more thing to consider. In pick-up games organization can overcome better talent. Mount has a tradition of winning and discipline. That would serve them well in a pick-up game. The Zips?? They are still seeking an identity and there is no proof yet of discipline. I watched the spring game and all my attention was on the QBs. I was especially interested how the QBs handled themselves on the sidelines and after the game. I only want thesis to win and I don’t have a dog in this race….but I was not very impressed by the leadership qualities shown in that game. I'm looking for a pant load of mature leadership out of Nicely this year. Also went to Nicely's Twitter page provided by Zach earlier in this thread and read with great interest Pat's description of how his farts smell. ....so are we talking scents of steamed broccoli? rotten eggs? Brussels sprouts? old cottage cheese? something completely new?

Looks like Mack Brown is in BIG trouble. Here's an OVERVIEW of the 7-on-7 game for those (including me) who aren't that familiar with it. BTW, if anyone knows whether these unofficial college scrimmages deviate much from the AAU rules please advise. My take on the Mount thing is that while it's not great news to hear, it's probably doesn't have much impact on how the Zips will turn out this year. IMO, you're taking away what I believe will be the strength of the offense (Chisholm) in this setup. I do believe it may further highlight our questionable secondary, however. Hopefully we'll get some of the injured back and/or gain contributions from the incoming freshmen.

Akron September opponent's coach in hot water?
johnnyzip84 replied to Dr Z's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
As an aside, it looks like Urban Meyer will make his broadcast debut at this game. That will be kind of interesting. After some deliberation, I think I'm skipping this OOC road trip and plan to head to Cincy instead. So is it too early to start talking about a watch party? If there was ever a time when we'll need to coordinate such an event, it will be for this game (or we'll be completely drowned out by the opposition). The Barley House would seem like a hopeless cause for this one. Maybe BW3's across from the Info? It's small enough that if we get there early and in numbers we might just pull it off. Ripper's place? Any other suggestions? -
Can Evan Stop Henry?

I am confused. Nothing new there, but...Is this the same league that shows games on FSC -- where they call it the USL??? There is still a USL but it's been weakened somewhat. It's complicated, but the USL effectively split after the 2009 season when a number of clubs, Montreal among them, chose to form the "new" NASL due to differences in opinion between various league factions. This has resulted in a realignment of the entire American Soccer Pyramid.. So the games that Fox Soccer Channel is televising (I only watched about 5 minutes of the game last week, but I think the Charleston Battery were playing (???) vs Orlando??) are actually the "third tier" "USL Pro"? Sheesh! That is correct (although your Charleston Battery vs. Orlando City game may have actually been a US Open Cup match). I've looked for NASL games on TV, but I haven't been able to find any so far. This "schism" also threw a bit of a monkey wrench into the US Open Cup. US-based NASL clubs will not be participating in the 2011 Cup. This link gives more details on what prompted the USL to break apart (see History section). -

Potential College Football Scandal
johnnyzip84 replied to Dave in Green's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
I didn't need any convincing that SEC football is consistently the best in the country, but this gives some more insight as to why. No wonder for years and years the only NFL team in the "south" was the Redskins. -

He's actually a Lobo, but it's a funny story nonetheless How many people recall the old Zippers whipping BOTH the Aggies (in the Rubber Bowl) AND the Lobos (AT Albuquerque to boot!) in the Faustian days? -

Recruiting Class of 2011
johnnyzip84 replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
PD coverage with some nice things to say about Williams. He's really played well in these all-star games. His quickness appears to standout in particular, but it's also nice to hear about his ability to catch the ball downfield. I'm excited to see him in the fall. I think we may have found our punt returner for the next 4 years. This kid is going to tear apart MAC defenses. He looks like Peter Warrick when he was at FSU except he is way faster. It'll be interesting to see if he's Garret Wolfe...a little guy with the body type to take a pounding. Or Eugene Jarvis...little guy who couldn't take the pounding. I hate using this "cliche" term, but I see Williams as more of a "slash" type player as opposed to an every down back like Wolfe and Jarvis. He seems to bring a more varied skill set to the field than either of these guys. It's hard for me to see him NOT getting PT as a true FR both at punt returner and at slot receiver. He'd be a great wildcat QB as well, with the added threat of a pass every now and then out of this formation to keep the D honest. -

This guy lists five possible candidates that he's heard mentioned, after a lengthy rant about how our coaching search is taking too long. Little has been found of who may be considered for Akron's next coach but these five names have been mentioned. Michigan assistant Matt Husted Ex-Notre Dame Head Coach Dave Schrage Ex-Wake Forest Rick Rembielak Wayne State Head Coach Ryan Kelley Wright State assistant Greg Lovelady Watch it end up being some random guy who spent time with our AD at Wisky or Minnesota. I thought this guy sounded familiar. He was HC at K.E.N.T. prior to Wake and, of course, had much success there. It'd be interesting to see if he'd even have any interest here.
