Here here!!

I forgot. Thanks for the head up B&G. Martin took the DB job with Brian Kelly at Notre Dame. GVSU is still undefeated this year. It just goes to show that once that train is moving, it's much easier to keep it going. Link

I suppose I should have been more specific with my use of the term "trends". I was referring to the mathematical definiton as in "what trends may be gleaned from the data?". I've listed Winter's win-loss records below. 2004 1-9 2005 3-7 2006 6-5 2007 3-8 2008 8-3 2009 6-5 2010 5-1 If you plot the number of wins over his tenure, any logical "curve fit" will clearly indicate an upward trend. Whether or not you are impressed by an upward trend in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference is another matter. I was a big supporter of hiring Grand Valley's Chuck Martin, but even I realize that he had the benefit of following Brian Kelly, who had built a solid program over a 12 year period there. It's much easier to keep a winning program going than it is to build from the ground up, which was the situation faced by Winters when he took the Wayne State job. I don't believe for a minute that Martin hasn't had opportunities to move up. He's simply waiting for the right job. Edit: I think he took the DB job at Notre Dame after he didn't get the CMU HC position. You're delusional if you think there is a huge leap between the top D-2 football programs and the current state of the Zips. The stock market is a roller coaster also, but analysts make fortunes paying attention to the trends. Regarding your original question, the answer is simple. The vast majority of FBS programs don't consider D-2 coaches because they have their pick of MAC/Sunbelt/FCS head coaches. The FBS dregs, like us, do not have that luxury.

Not sure. Jenna Compton is stilled listed on the GoZips.com roster. Maybe iCoach gave her a few pointers

You're not much for trends I assume. It's true, Winter's career record at Wayne State currently stands at 32-38. But in the last 2 1/2 years, the record is 19-10. This is at a school that has an all-time winning percentage of 42.1%. Several have mentioned that they'd like to see him win something at the D-2 level before he would get serious consideration here. If he does manage to ever win a GLIAC title, it would be quite a feat. In that scenario, I believe we would have competition in hiring him. BTW, I found this to be surprising. Did anyone realize these two facts about Wayne State? 1) It's the 3rd largest university in Michigan. 2) Its endowment is $204 million!!! (UA's is only $133.3 million)

We're up to #4. Interestingly, we must be considered the best of the winless teams on the list. And where is PSU_Lions_84 when you need him??

I had the same problem using Google Chrome. Thanks!!

As it should be in the Land of Zip! Besides, football is only PART of the story.

We've been discussing college football offensive schemes lately, and I thought this article on Chip Kelly's Oregon Duck offense might be of interest to some. It really highlights the dilemma the NFL is dealing with in talent evaluation, something GP1 has mentioned recently.

I have a friend who has one side of her mouth permanently hooked upward. She had suffered a stroke. Indicating of course that she has brain damage. Perhaps his upward hook is showing his drain bamage. Honestly, I did initially consider a medical condition. But after watching him for a while I don't think that is the case.

Just build a new stadium and you will be good.....It worked for us....... ...then go out and hire a bunch of coaches who couldn't win at Notre Dame, but will somehow win at Akron... ......like Pete Cordelli!

Thanks for the heads up Johnny! I just turned on the replay in the islands. Who woulda thought Joe Scarborough would be a Liverpool fanatic?! "Caleb Porter's done an incredible job there. Sorry, Caleb, I second-guessed you." Kyle Martino's response to Kenny Arena's comment that Akron is the team to beat this year, and has a fellow named Darlington Nagbe who's a Hermann contender. But, did you notice how Arena holds his head? Just like his dad, he has some sort of hook up his nose, so he can look down it at everybody. No wonder this show is sponsored by Jackass! I somehow missed that Martino apology. My bad. But it's hilarious that you brought up Arena's appearance. I was watching with my youngest and I mentioned to him about how one side of Kenny's mouth seems to be permanently shifted upwards. It exudes a definite air of cockiness. I enjoyed the Scarborough piece too.

So I'm watching Soccer Talk Live on Fox Soccer Channel tonight. The host is Kyle Martino, who many of us will remember as the UVa shill who provided some of the color for ESPN coverage of the tournament last year. He certainly didn't give the Zips much credit then. Well his guest tonight was Kenny Arena, son of famous US coach Bruce Arena. Kenny also played at UVa and he is now an assistant at UCLA. They get into a discussion on the Hermann Award and show pictures of a half dozen or so candidates, all from either the Big-10 or ACC. I figure at this point UA soccer is getting dissed again. But to his credit, Kenny Arena eventually mentions the #1 Zips as the team to beat and you can almost see Martino's jaw drop! Loved it

I can't argue too much with the points made by the Cap'n, but I do think K.E.N.T. has a pretty good defense. I'm not excusing our blunders, but I don't think it's a coincidence that our offense struggled more vs. NIU and K.E.N.T. than it did against Indiana. I actually liked SOME of the game plan with regards to using Burney in the wildcat to shake up K.E.N.T.'s nationally ranked run defense. But the basic running game was more or less hopeless. K.E.N.T.'s offense is just as bad as ours, though. But kudos to our defense for certainly playing well enough to win.

Did anyone else see what Nicely did on the end zone fumble?

How do you think Youtube Tom feels about it? I'll probably get bored and change it before too long, but I had to come up with something quickly! -

There is NO doubt that, at the very least, iCoach needs to be looking at a "Plan B" at QB for 2011. And the JUCO route would seem to make the most sense. Here's the problem I see. How many JUCO (or HS) QB's out there are playing in a Pro-Style offense? I'll bet it's not many. You don't have to watch a whole lot of college (or high school) football to realise that the Spread is the dominant offense. And, while I'm not defending PN7's play, why in the world was he continuously under center during certain pass situations yesterday? The feeble play action fakes in those instances are a complete waist as well. The K.E.N.T. defense is certainly good enough, but tactics like this must have had them salivating before each critical snap. -
Why can't we be like Troy? I'd say we're half way towards BEATING him --> Per Wikipedia: Now if we could only have our story end the same way as Aikman's career!
-
Spot on. As soon as he had it, he should have been ruled down.
-
Don't tell this to the folks on "the Plains". They might not bother to show for the Iron Bowl this year. I agree that Troy is no better than an upper MAC team. But they DID make the journey from D-2 to D-1 in a relatively quick period.
-
I think the biggest factor here is that they've been forced to remove Terry from an already-thin receiving corp and move him back to RB. We can't lie to ourselves. Without a healthy Jarvis in the game, we have a better chance of winning. So we might have been a 24 point underdog with Jarvis in the lineup? Speaking of the line, it's shifted slightly to 17.5 pts. Fred must be putting down a bundle on this one.
-
That's an interesting comparison, ITZ. And you're right that it's easy to forget some of the other "low points" in Zip FB history, while we're wallowing in our current malaise. But it also highlights just how critical it is for RI's squad to do something positive soon, hopefully this Saturday. Otherwise, Cordelli.....errr.....Ianello could soon find himself in unchartered waters as a 1st-year UA HC.
-
Potts played a fair amount in the spring game and he struggled against our reserves. Looks to be a high school roll-out QB with a questionable arm.
-
Although it's probably not a big deal at this point, Jarvis is unlikely to be back this Saturday.

You might be right, but the game in East Lansing won't be easy in spite of the Spartans having lost in Columbus recently 2-1.
