Okruch gets another shot at DC....
johnnyzip84 replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips Football
Congratulations to Illinois State's future opponents, whose DLs will become sackmasters! And, you failed to mention JD is interviewing in Cinci. Thanks Mr. Thomas! Sorry about that, but the JD story was added later today after I originally posted this. You'd have to think he'd be interviewing for an OC job, right? -

It also looks like Fleming is in the mix for the FIU DC job.Link -
And now a long snap out the back of the end zone...they came unraveled really quickly.A truely MACtastic finish if there ever was one.I think the late 4th quarter long snap that went into the end zone was the HIGHEST snap I have ever seen in a game of football, including K.E.N.T.'s in the Blizzard Bowl.

FIU is reportedly interested. I was REALLY hoping to keep him at UA Also, Callahan may land at Illinois St.Link

RI has visited 6 of the 8 JD recruits and called another per this morning's article on Ohio.com (link). Hoobler still appears to be the only one to decommit. Link -

Akron "All-Aughts" Teams; Nominate Your Favorite Zips from 2000-09
johnnyzip84 replied to UA Fan's topic in Other Sports
While a bit of a sidebar, this top 3 D-1 hoops players is a very good debate. I'm having a really hard time deciding. If J-Wood hadn't been injured, he'd have been #1 IMHO. Even so, I'm placing him on my top 3 just because other teams were forced to double him so often, even after his injury. And his passing skills were superb. Cricket has to be on the list, because of his production and leadership over 4 years as Cap'n mentioned. It doesn't hurt that he played his heart out in Cowlumbus against you know who in his final game. I'll go with Boyce in the final spot, mainly due to his ability to bring the crowd to its feet WHILE making huge contributions towards a championship. His 1985-86 form would hold its own "athletically" even by today's standards. -
What a gracious invite. Welcome aboard, Penguiroo ! +1 We might even get Tressel to write you a "forward" once you're aboard

Soccer gets 3rd 2010 verbal
johnnyzip84 replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Mele Kalikimaka to you Z.I.P. and Merry Christmas to all on ZN I just happened to get lucky on this one. My cable company has fortunately carried Fox Soccer Channel just about from its inception. So the EPL just happens to be a niche of mine. I would still defer to either yourself or w00t (and others I'm sure) for all-around futbol knowledge. -
Column Bemoans Sorry State of MAC Basketball
johnnyzip84 replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Greensboro's been a decent team in the not so distant past, right? And I agree with the Malone game following a week hiatus due to finals. Like it's been mentioned, the other mid majors are mid-to-upper level mid-majors. St. Francis is the only team that "sucks." It does happen that Greensboro, UIC, and Valpo are having bad years. Makes the sched look worse than it is.On a side note, did anyone else notice Sunday in the JAR that someone on staff was on the ball when programming the abbreviation for the visitor on the center court scoreboard? St. Francis probably should be abbreviated "STFU," but was smartly listed as "SFU." :D I think a few Zips, including BMac, may have been saying the former to #40 on a few occasions. The program that might be the biggest underachiever of late has to be Ball St. With their facilities and hoops tradition, there is no reason that they should be as bad as they've been. -
I forgot about him. It is kind of fate really.Cruz drops footballs, Hofstra drops football.LOL...If i remember one play from that Buffalo game it'll be that one forever. That was memorable alright. So we'll have another "reunion" of sorts next year. I wonder how much his trip to Syracuse in 2008 influenced his decision. If I recall, he's from the Johnstown, PA area.

As I recall these gloves were designed by a honest to goodness native American named " Hole in the head where my ear should be." There is something wonderfully wrong with you. This is one of your best

Look at the big picture. JD goes to ASU after ASU goes 4-8. Their coach has to be on the hot seat so there may not be many coaches with JD's experience looking at that job.Even if they get fired after next year, JD is in the same city as his star pupil Larry Fitzgerald. Those two have always had a close relationship. Next thing you know, JD is coaching WRs for the Cardinals. If the Redskins end up hiring Mike Shanahan as HC, JD could be a WR coach in the NFL even sooner.

Soccer gets 3rd 2010 verbal
johnnyzip84 replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Thanks, Zach! I'm glad someone else is taking an interest in the upcoming futbol classes.I've mentioned Eriq Zavaleta, class of 2010, often. No verbal for him, could he be a 2011? Looking even FURTHER down the road, did you see the US Development Academy Friendlies over Thanksgiving weekend? That center back from Amherst, OH looks absolutely incredible. Andrew Souders --- he doesn't turn 16 till Feb 2010. First US Youth player from Brad Friedel's Premier Academy, apparently has gone over to Crew Academy, and is now in his first semester at Bradenton Residency.Check out the new (post-U-17 World Cup) Bradenton roster.http://www.socceramerica.com/index.cfm?fus...p;art_aid=34123heh, funny that you mention that soccer academy. It is actually built in my hometown of Lorain, OH but the kids are sent to neighboring Amherst for schooling. I hope to hear about kids from there considering Akron. So the Premier Soccer Academy is a residential program, eh? Wonder if Brad makes enough at Fulham to provide scholarships. I know Fulham has been home for several Yanks, but Brad's been with Villa since the beginning of the 2008-2009 season (and Blackburn for 8 years before that). This year he is playing as well as ever. I'm guessing he's making more now that he did at Blackburn also, so perhaps he does "kick in" to the Academy -
Getting back on topic (stadium) I have to think the Women's program will probably see as big of a benefit, if not more, from the stadium improvements. UA is seriously becoming THE soccer HQ of this region, and one of the more important pockets of enthusiasm the sport enjoys throughout the country. Count me in as another new season ticket holder (x2 including my lovely wife) for next year. We didn't get to as many games as I would have liked this year, but we did manage to make the trip to Ann Arbor and really enjoyed it. As a side note, this has been quite a year for "my" soccer teams. Seattle had a great entry into MLS. Montreal won the USL-1 championship and the Blues of Birmingham City are currently on a 5 game winning streak in the EPL. Boy how I'd love to see Teal get a shot "over there" some day. Oooops I went off-topic again

I know GK's are the default votes for Defensive MVP awards, but Holy Cow, that UVa defender, Volks, was EVERYWHERE on Sunday! Must have set some record for blocked shots/passes. Just giving credit where it's due -- in fact Virgina would have had a much harder time keeping us off the scoreboard without him. He was like the Ndamukong Suh of College Cup.+1 I don't know what year here is in, but Volks is ready for a higher level of soccer right now. And that's not to take anything away from Diego. He was superb for the last 1/2 of the season. No doubt, that guy broke up at least 3 plays that could/should have been solid shots at goal. He really got the Rowdies going after one of them as well when he fist pumped right in our faces and did a "bring it on" motion. I loved the fierce play of that game.I took a look on the UVa site and Mike Volk is just a junior. It looks like he transfered from Rutgers (another key Big East transfer for the Hoos).

Akron RB Levon Morefield a finalist for the Rudy Awards
johnnyzip84 replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Football
Congratulations aren't enough. It would be great to see him on the field this coming season. Either way, he'll be a tremendous asset to any organization in the future. -

I wonder if the Mods would let me change my name to formerexzipsfan?

So you're telling me I should be selling my autographed 5 x 7 of #5 AND my "Frye for Heisman" bumper sticker on e-Bay BEFORE the game on Sunday? How much are you asking? I could trade a couple Joey Belle rookie cards.I'll tell you what. IF you can hit me in the gut with a baseball from a distance of about 100 ft, you may have yourself a deal

That is the "logical" Big 12 replacement, but you have to figure that the SEC and Big 12 would be willing to consider TCU as a possibility. If that happens, then the merry-go-round ends right there. The merry-go-round ends for us, but it gets really interesting in the west. If the Big XII takes any of the MWC teams, it creates a monster of a problem. The MWC is left with 8 teams, which is a problem for scheduling. So they add Boise State, and then the WAC has the same problem. No western schools have plans to move up. You could see the MWC take more teams from the WAC to get a championship game and kill off the WAC (their main competition) entirely. Nevada, Fresno State, and New Mexico State are the biggest candidates, plus one more. LA Tech would be forced into joining the Sun Belt, even though they are adamantly against it, if they want to survive.LOL, 8 teams is the NCAA minimum requirement for a conference, the MWC would be fine (and have no incentive to do anything) with it I doubt they would try and get another team (the Big East has done it for 5 years now with no major problems). Additionally how would it be advantagious to Boise State to play in a conference with Utah? If TCU replaces a team in the Big 12 or SEC because of Big 10 expansion, nothing really happens after that. Now, I will say this. The BCS (no it's not going away) has been rumored to be heavily considering requiring all affiliate conferences to have a conference championship game. That means current members Big 10, PAC-10, and Big East will need 12 teams (NCAA requirement to have a championship game). There is one potential ENORMOUS advantage for Boise St to join the MWC.MWC 1/2 Way to BCS Automatic Bid?Of course if TCU leaves, that might change things a little. But I don't think it completely eliminates the chances for the MWC (especially one with Boise St) a shot at an automatic BCS bid.
