Steve French's short list of candidates
johnnyzip84 replied to zipboy's topic in Akron Zips Football
Debbie here. I know it is hard to concentrate and all. Especially when the economic downturn is poised to affect the industrialized areas like Akron the worst. Jobless recovery 2010-2013 here we come! Poor diet and industrialized food like creamed vegetables have been linked to early onset diabetes... and bad football. That play should not have been allowed anyways. The Refs missed a hold call. Got to play by the rules is what Dad always said, even after his 5 year stint at PMITA Federal prison. Respecting the law was a large part of my childhood. And feline AIDS. The number one killer of domestic cats. They were talking about that too. I know. I wish everyone would talk about H1N1. Now that flu vaccines are readily available, and no one is taking them, we can all look forward to years of this illnesses wreaking havoc on our friends and family. Can't wait for bird flu's inevitably Ohio visit. It must have been nice to focus on something like that while growing up when it came to activities. Not me. Thanks scoliosis. I would settle for a competent Homeland Security Department. They never did catch that anthrax guy...  Well done, cornbread! -
The last I recall hearing about Phil is that he was caught up in a paperwork/NCAA clearing house problem after transferring from Los Angeles Harbor. He was being redshirted and was attending classes. I did see him on the sidelines against EMU with fellow LA Harbor transfer Bowser.

Man I guess you REALLY would have been disappointed in 2005 if you had been one of us at the UA-NIU championship game when the reported attendance was only 12,051 (Wiki link) and the actual attendance seemed closer to 5 or 6 thousand.2005 MAC Champ Wiki Link

Akron didn't give the award. The MAC did. You shouldn't fault Akron. You sound like a crazy football mom...I could be wrong, but I believe ZIPFB#1 was saying that in jest.I agree with the Cap'n on this. I don't think many MAC coaches had their eyes and ears on Akron over the last half of the season. It's actually pretty surprising (to me) that UA landed so many players on these teams. I think it's some evidence that there IS talent on board here (subject of another thread).

If it happens, any apologies should be directed towards Mark Stoops! -
You can always count on Hilk for some memorable quotes!I wonder if he ever got a Hamilton Ti-Cats tattoo? I never knew he held the CFL record (tie) for most tackles for loss in a game (4.....IN the FIRST QUARTER!).Link

I don't mind the donkey logo. I think it"s pretty cool, but at the same time I've always liked the retro "flying A" that was on the players helmets in the Jason Taylor days? Correct me if I'm a wrong. There was another "Action A" from the Faust era. I'm trying to find one.The link below, posted on ZN before I believe, is an EXCELLENT source for all FBS football helmets, past and present. The "moving A" was used by all of Faust's teams (beginning 1986 in the link).Link

I dunno.....this time of year you can really get some nice deals at Overstocked.com

I'm not sure anyone here really believes TW is accepting their input to help make his decision. Like others have said, I'm simply pleased that he asked.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the Chips run HARD after Chuck Martin One thing that hurts Martin in all of these openings is his success. If GVS wins D2, then Akron, CMU, etc will have to WAIT until then to officially hire him. With UA trying to hold the recruiting class together, this might sway TW away from him (if he hasn't already selected his guy, of course).Edit: So SeeTee and probably some others want to see an IMPACT hire. How about this scenario. What if UA was to decisively and transparently OUTBID CMU for Chuck Martin? I think that would send a strong message to the rest of the MAC that UA is dead serious about its intentions. -
the guy is full of it...he has his guy already. If you think for one second your feedback matters then your out of your minds!! It will be funny when those of you that pick Loeffler think you had anything to do with it, when he got the job almost a month ago....hey keep believing ....Go ZipsIf it's Loeffler, so be it. But if it's NOT, can we expect you to admit you were.......ahem.........w-w-r-r-w-r-o-n-g?

I wonder if Chase was in attendance for the IU nightmare game?
-
+1! I received a response to my question about Chuck Martin and Tom simply said that he was among those "under consideration".

I realize that many new coaches like to change the uni too, but I'd rather the Zips stay the course in this area. I like our uniform. I also think that it's a red flag for a losing program when you see them change unis every 4 or 5 years. There is never any time for a visual identity to gain any traction. Leave em alone.

Wistrcill looking for a specific type of coach
johnnyzip84 replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Football
SeeTee.......is this you?Throwing money at a situation, especially in the context of sports, is no guarantee of success. I'm all for the Zips spending in the upper tier of MAC schools (perhaps even topping Temple if needed), but if we can get a talented D-2/FCS HC for less than a "big name" BCS "whatever" I know I'd prefer the former. -
When it comes to selecting a head coach, I think the fan input should be minimal. The AD needs to make the call. Where a fan's input would help TW is by providing an objective look at the team's history. AD's come and go. Coaches come and go. But fans are here for decades. And most fans are objective...not University "shills/lifers." If you want to know about Paul Winters' offense, I can tell you. Other fans can too. Those in the existing UA Athletic's Dept? They have very little clue who Winters is.When it comes to the "fan experience" (tailgating, amenities, etc) the fan input should ABSOLUTELY be considered. Too many admisistrators with fabulous advanced college degrees have absolutely no clue what it takes to make Joe Akron excited about UA sports. They think they do...but they don't.It is a bit scary that TW is a first time AD. Looking at Mike Thomas...as great an AD as he is...he took a flier on a relatively unknown position coach with his first hire, and the results were marginal at best. For football hire #2 he went the route of a finding guy with successful head coaching experience (Kelly). That was a home run. Thomas cut his teeth with hires at UA, and learned from it. I hope TW can skip the teeth-cutting. Taking a gamble on a guy short on experience, but with killer interview skills, could be devastating. We need a winner.I like the points you make here regarding relative experience, Cap'n. But it's funny (to me) how many different opinions we get on ZN when evaluating the EFFECTIVENESS of Winters' offense at UA, objective or not. We all have different perspectives I guess.I asked Tom if Chuck Martin is under consideration I figured, why not ask a direct question related to the coaching search and see if I even get a response.

X2Looking into Martin's bio (link) he really is an impressive choice. It's hard to say whether $400K would be enough to get him "interested" or not. Note, he was also the DC under Kelly when he (Kelly) was HC at Grand Valley.Chuck Martin Bio

You assume Vrabel wants to coach. If Tressel is going to retire in 5-6 years, the safe bet for LF would be to stay there as DC and take over as HC if he can get the job. There is much more risk in taking the Akron job than waiting out Tressel. Not that we need any assistance while kicking ass in K.E.N.T., but I'm sure Mikey could help in this regard.

He would make an interesting candidate. How many schools have a coach that can fly themselves to recruiting visits? I didn't realize he is from New Castle, PA Would he pick Akron? He's looking for the rest of the large pizza he ate the night before....Aren't you guys being a little rough on the guy? After all, the Zip sidelines seem to have been missing a little "heft" ever since Junko left for Pitt.

why play a I-AA school?...its not like we are going to go out and win 8 other games...play a D-I school that you can compete with...sunbelt...low level cusa...how many of you go to the morgan state game if its in october and not the Info. opener?+1If you want to think small, expect small results. We can 'play with' any team. Can we win, probably not, but that doesnt mean we wont try. I'd rather see a historic DIV-1 team here than a historic IAA team. B-O-R-I-N-G. Besides, dont the wins again lower conferneces not count?I want to see winning and going to bowl games. Beating I-AA teams gets you to a bowl game. Losing gets empty stadiums and our current scheduling guarantees three losing games a year. When the Zips get really good, the scheduling could take them from 7-5 to 9-3....fans get excited about 9-3.Also, I-AA teams guarantee not only wins,, but home games. The Big Phone Booth was built for watching football, not to sit empty while we play away games.Don't forget, only ONE win over an FCS (1-AA) team counts towards the amount required for bowl eligibility. If you choose your FCS opponent carefully, then a win is nearly assured (ala Morgan St.). Gardner Webb is a pretty good choice in this regard. But, I'd stay away from the good FCS programs. I still wince when I consider we nearly scheduled South Dakota State instead of Morgan St. this year. That could have been a humiliating experience (especially, since the early talk was that it would be held AFTER the expected IU Info opener).

My son is on the team and feels bad for JD, however it became apparent during the middle of the season that the coaches were not in agreement most of the time to the point that there was alot of infighting, etc.....when you loose the coaches and assistants you cannot be successful...GO ZIPSThat's a shame about the lack of cohesiveness on the staff. Hindsight is 20/20 but I suppose this potential scenario was overlooked by most of us (me too) when Shane and Walt were brought on. I've mentioned my admiration for Vince Okruch before, but I really hope that the new HC looks at him as a potential DC. He's been EXCELLENT in this role in the past. I know it's unlikely, but I can still hope.

With Snyder now out at Marshall, and Mangino in possible hot water at Kansas, this is looking to be a season of relatively high head coaching turnover. BTW IF Mangino gets fired, I think he'd make an interesting candidate. He's from New Castle, PA originally and his 50-48 career record at KU is pretty good for a "hoops" school IMHO. I'm not sure we could afford him, but maybe he'd look at us as a great chance to redefine his legacy.

I think the new coach will accept them. The new coach would be hard-pressed to recruit his own entire freshman class in a month's time.I don't doubt that. The real question is how many of them will still be interested in coming here. After all, this is exactly how we got Nicely is last year's class. Hopefully, with the top-notched facilities and promise of open competition for PT UA can currently offer, we'll keep most of them.

I thought it might be interesting to revisit what people had to say regarding whether JD should have been retained after LAST season.Link
