If you think things are bad now......
johnnyzip84 replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips Football
I stand corrected. I forgot A-10 football decided to go by the name Colonial Athletic Association a few years ago. -
.....as a possibility on our 2009 schedule? It was the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, who had a HUGE win in the tough Missouri Valley over Northern Iowa this past weekend. The link below says it happened on "Hobo Day", which has now become one of my favorite holidays.Big Jackrabbit WinIt's a good thing we decided to play Morgan State instead. Now Northern Iowa's coach was one of my preferred candidates a few weeks ago. Maybe I should include the SDSU coach also. I really hope we look at coaches in both the Missouri Valley and the Atlantic 10. My view is if you can win consistently in those leagues, you ought to be able to win consistently in the MAC.

That's where I draw the distinction regarding the merits of JD's alleged loyalty. In my mind, loyalty to the program and the university, from the head football coach, equals a burning desire to do whatever it takes to win on the field. The best coaches aren't particularly loyal to individual players or to other coaches on their staffs. They always put the team, and team success, ahead of everything else. For all of the twisted love of "the sweater vest" in Ohio, I have absolutely no doubt that his deal with players and coaches is that he is going to play the best players every week, the players and the schemes that give that team its best chance to win are the ones who are going to see the field. Players who were all-world in high school but don't produce or don't fit the scheme don't see the field, period. So, if the implication is that JD plays certain kids, who aren't right for the scheme, or aren't as good as others kids on the roster, I call that utterly misplaced loyalty and in the context of D-1 coaching, complete nonsense. Same goes for coaches on his staff. If your allusions to loyalty by JD are about his hard-workingness, hours spent in the team offices (which UA actually has now) and general boosterism for the program, I would again argue that those hours have simply been wasted. Hopefully for him personally, he has learned enough to catch a position on a college or professional staff after this year and earn a living, but he is a failure as a head college football coach. I actually don't care how hard working a head college football coach is. If he wins games and recruits good players, I'm happy. JD may even be a complete workaholic, but we've all known workaholics who weren't particularly productive. I'm convinced that JD could sell ice to eskimos, but he is a bad college head football coach. It's time for UA to decide what it wants. After they fire JD and this entire staff, it'll be time for Proenza to do a little soul searching. If the board wants to build a real football program, and decide that there exists the potential for success (some would doubt the potential for an upstart program in the veritable cradle of football, where there are already so many high-quality programs for kids to choose from) they will have to put more money into the program. They will have to pay (for the first time) for a high-quality head coach and staff, who will have to redouble their efforts to recruit high quality players. UA has gone part of the way with capital improvements, but that money will have been wasted if there is not a strong commitment made to the human beings who will build the program, basically from the ground up.STZLet's say the worst case scenario occurs and the Zips finish 1-10. Even in that situation, that certainly doesn't mean that the next coach will have to build "from the ground up". It's not like JD's teams of recent years have been involved in games like the Kansas State 65-0 debacle or the one where Miami's QB took a knee in scoring position JUST BEFORE HALFTIME. Things are bad, but in NO way is this program one that should be characterized as having to start over. The right coach can turn it around quickly. I'm fully convinced of that. The key will be having a smooth transition, one in which key players and recruits are retained.

Akron Zips vs Syracuse Orange Prediction Thread
johnnyzip84 replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips Football
Thanks, Rowdy I will likely be there as well. The Winking Lizard is a NO at this point, and I don't know that we have much of a choice. -
I realize that interest in football is waning somewhat, but we can't let a game go by without an official prediction thread.I'm going 'Cuse 31 Zips 27 as I believe Nicely and Torrence will continue to give us hope for the future. But we'll have real problems with Orange WR Mike Williams and local RB Delone Carter will also play well. Also I'm curious if anyone has settled on or found an establishment where they might be headed to watch the game tomorrow. I'm thinking about calling the Geisen Haus in a while to see if they'll carry the game for those of us who are close to the Belden Village area.Edit: The Geisnen Haus has neither Dish Network nor Direct TV. I'm scrambling now. I hate to even say it, but will the Barley House be carrying it? At least the Red and Silver game is at noon.

Feature Article in PD / Cleveland.Com
johnnyzip84 replied to Zip Watcher's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Super article! Here's to hoping the "ding" that was bothering him from time to time at Michigan will not become anything more than a nuisance. There's no question he's the type of player that makes everyone else so much better. Of course, the Zips are stocked with kids that have that mentality and awareness. But he might be tops in this area. -
Well done, Dr. Franken.....err......Z! That's just the kind of thing we needed in Zip football land these days

Can the Zips run the table?
johnnyzip84 replied to MDZip's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Getting to the NCAAs unblemished is one thing. Taking it all the way to the championship is another. This team is obviously capable of doing both, but if it we're up me I'd sacrifice a regular season or MAC tourny hiccup if the Zips go on to win the NCAA championship. In terms of national competition, don't look now but Kenny Lola's Louisville Cards seem to be getting it together at a good time (link). Their 4-0 thrashing of IU yesterday will garner some attention.LinkThis will undoubtedly make some at UA nervous about Indiana's coaching situation and possible future hires (have we ever seen the dead horse in the soccer forum? ) -
what?! You gotta big kidding me.

Very good! The brickwork shown on the rendering posted near the field looked really nice. If something like this were to be adopted at UA, it would dovetail nicely with the look of the Info and the overall campus IMHO. -

Wagner makes Phil Steele's All MAC Mid season edition
johnnyzip84 replied to ksu sucks's topic in Akron Zips Football
Well deserved indeed. But Sewell not making the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd teams is absurd. But sadly, beyond Sewell, is there anyone you think they overlooked? I was even a little surprised Woods made it. I'm very happy to see that Wagner made the first team though - very impressive. If he (Steele) had placed Sewell on the 1st or 2nd team and left off Woods completely, I think that would have better reflected what we've seen on the field this year. And yes, sadly, that has been the season in a nutshell. Nobody else's play thus far has really deemed them any special attention thus far (although Bowser's injury eliminates a slim chance at all-MAC honors in his case...hope he's doing well and get's to show the NFL what he can do when he's healthy). -
Awe man, that makes me SO hungry and it's only 8:30 am!!! I cannot wait until the Can't Chili Cookoff I've got some home grown Habaneros that are just itching to "get in the game".

Michigan Game thread

I concur with the estimate of 50 Zip fans in attendance. That was the first away game for my wife and me, and it sure was entertaining. The talent and skill that was displayed yesterday was amazing. I'll echo the comment that it was fun to see the AD there and mixing it up with the Rowdies (maybe he was also there to check out the new grandstand Michigan is building for their soccer programs?). The funniest thing to me, was when a Michigan official came over to the Rowdies to explain that they can taunt players as long as they don't use real first names, last names, or numbers Well there was this 5 or 6 year old boy among the Michigan contingent who took it upon himself to challenge the Rowdies at their game. By the end of the match I heard him shout "Zemanski!" filled with as much disdain as he could muster. As was pointed out by the Rowdies, that kid had more fight than the rest of the Michigan fans combined w00t, as we were leaving I realized that the Michigan-Indiana game I watched on CBS College Sports a few weeks back was probably played on the "main pitch" as the scoreboard there still had Indiana listed. Maybe they rotate games to save the grass (which was in amazing shape, by the way)? -

Your an idiot for even posting such a statement. People like you make me sick. How this one? Hey Zips fans do you think I will get a life? Hope the players are not reading this garbage. I'm sure the coaches are smart enough not to read your crap!!!With six games left in the season are you kidding me. Why can't an idiot that has so much time on his hands make a choice to be positive and stop bashing a team that has been handed every bad thing ever imaginable? Must be an NE Ohio thing.....being down all the time.johnny zip84 (local idiot)Carlton Jackson quit the team...left them because he wanted to pursue his own agenda..he was not a team guy and he couldn't play against Division I teams! I'm glad that your glad for him....he is lucky he is going to a school that doesn't have a class attendance policy, he would never in his life be eligible to play for the ZIPS because he never went to class, but I am happy your happy for him because I am sure he is happy not having to be a responsible man in college.....gosh your such an idiot dude!!!!!!Last time I checked the Zips were Division I. Zips 41 -CJ 0........ dude.......you people around here are twisted. If you really feel like bashing the Zips go get a sign and walk around campus....I just check the weather in Akron...Sunny and cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!But, you won't do it....none of you will, because none of you have the balls, you all hide behind fictitious names and act like you have all the answers!Go Zips...go win one and shut up all these idiots that have nothing better to do than be negative and sorry for breathing!!!!! I can't believe you folks in Akron.....I am glad I graduated and got out of the midst of you hostile ignorant downers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Wow, I'm the local idiot If I continue to spew idiotic words I wonder if I will be promoted to regional idiot, or dare I dream, national idiot. I do thank you for your apparent inside information on the former CJ7 though. I don't know if it would have been enough for me to wish harm upon him however. If you thought I said I was "happy for him" in the sense that I felt he got a raw deal here, you misinterpreted me. I just don't bear grudges to anyone who decides to move on. I also don't bear grudges to those who have tried and failed. Consequently, I'll continue to wish the former CJ7 well AND the soon-to-be former head coach well in his future. Have a nice day! Oh, and keep the inside scoops coming! -

I think we'll have to devise a wager covering your first statement PM me with your initial suggestions. As far as your second statement goes, it forced me to recall the infamous "zero bowl" in Gerry Faust's last game as head coach. Both OU and UA were 0-10 heading into that season finale, with the Zippers pulling off the 24-10 victory and Gerry being carried (briefly) in the air on the shoulders of his appreciative players. While the Zips already own a win in 2009, is it competely out of the question that EMU and UA might face each other, winless in MAC (and FBS) contests? -
It was nice to see Reggie get one of Mark Sanchez's SIX ( ) interceptions in the Bills OT win. Overall he did a pretty nice job, often covering none other than #17. In a strange twist of fate, another ex-Zip ( ), the infamous Dwight Lowery, also picked up his 1st INT of the year for the losing Jets.

Will we win another game this season?
johnnyzip84 replied to scottditzen's topic in Akron Zips Football
Apparently you did not see the Capt's recent prediction that we will finish the year 7-5. This implies several wins including one we have already lost. Must be a forfeit for ineligible players or something. On a related note, while we haven't won a game since Morgan State, they haven't lost one since then. Little did we realize at the time that that game would be the turning point for both teams.I noticed that, too. Carlton Jackson has been playing steady as they are 5-1 and 3-0 in the MEAC. I'm honestly glad for him. -

johnnyzip84 replied to scottditzen's topic in Akron Zips Football
Don't bet on it!The only way we lose that one is if Nicely gets hurt. But we might be the underdog in all of the others. Regardless, if Nicely gets more settled and the running game and defense play as well as they did against the Bulls, I still think we can finish strong. It won't be enough to save JD's job, but at this point I'm only hoping for a little momentum and confidence for whoever is chose to take over the program. -
My wife and I decided last week to attend our very first soccer away game in Ann Arbor on Tuesday at 4:00 pm. I mentioned on another thread than UM looked pretty talented when I saw them play Indiana on TV a while back. They also have a 2-0 win at Cincinnati. It should be a good game.Is anyone else planning on heading up? I'm merely taking 1/2 day of vacation and I figure we'll still make it there in plenty of time leaving the house at noon. Plus if you leave for home right after the game, you shouldn't be home very late (9:30, 10:00 pm at the latest).

Game over. PN16 made a mistake, but the future at QB is still very bright. But after this one, JD's lifelines are spent.
-
We'll learn a little more about Nicely now.Edit: His WR's didn't help on 1st and 2nd down
