  1. Do they have penalty kicks in the pros? If so, he better hire someone to teach that aspect of the game. Nothing seems more important.PKs are only used in the MLS during the playoffs. Regular season ties count as one point in the standings (3 points for a win). This is typical world-wide for "group" play. If an MLS playoff series (one home, one away, the winner with the higher aggregate score) ends in a tie after the overtime period, then PKs decide the outcome. In general, whenever there is a single elimination tournament (the so-called "knock out stage" in the World Cup, Champions League etc), the specter of PKs deciding the champion lingers. As far as Caleb hiring someone for PKs, it should be noted that the Zips under his watch have been VERY successful (Bush etc.). And they just went 5 for 5 against UNC on Friday. Sure the 2 of 5 showing yesterday was well below acceptable, but don't forget UVa's staff had the advantage of watching and evaluating the Zips in this regard against UNC. It sucks that it happened at the most critical time, but these things happen in soccer.
  2. So I'm watching Chuck Martin's Grand Valley State team losing 23-6 in the 3rd to NW Mo St. Now that he won't be a Zip (to be honest, I thought he was a long shot anyway in spite of my feelings), I'm curious as to where he might land. The announcers (one of them being Ray Bentley a former CMU Chip LB) are saying that Martin is rumored to be the new DC at ND under Kelly. I wonder if he'd rather be a DC at a ND or a Head Coach at CMU (if Jones leaves, which is likely)?
  3. This just hasn't been your week. Our Sources say Wolford NOT a Candidate at YSU
  4. I voted bad hire (about 3 or 4 days ago) because I has my heart set on a D-2/FCS head coach. While Chuck Martin really intrigued me, there are a number of others who I thought would have been acceptable. BTW, the running back for Paul Winters' Wayne St squad won the Harlan Hill trophy (link). I really don't understand much of the disdain I read about Paul on here, but that's another topic. LinkOK, so I wasn't thrilled about the hire at first. Do you know how long it took me to get over it? About 24 hours. As a fan goes, I'm a team player. And I DO like the comments made by the NIU fan and others about Rob being a no BS kind of guy. This, in itself, will be a nice improvement. Go Zips!!!
  5. For chichen itza's sake, no!
  6. After sifting through their in-game thread, I'd say that most 'Heel fans gave the Zips their just due. That's a lot more than I can say for UNC forward Shula. I loved his "Akron's going to the a taste of ACC soccer" pre-game trash talk UNC In-Game Thread
  7. Frenchy said that since it went to PKs, the game is technically considered to be a tie. So I guess they're 23-0-1 for the record. But I don't think Porter and the players really care about that right now. They've had one goal from day one, and we all know what that is!
  8. Don't forget the save off of the line by Speas! I thought we were goners on that one for a second. This team has SO much heart, though. I should have known better.
  9. I think you were right as I see the reply. Looked like Nagby. My bad.
  10. Ball over the top to Nagbi and he had his man beat he got pushed from behind by the UNC guy with one yellow and that earned him his second 2 yellows = a red!I thought it was Bunbury?
  11. There has been at least half-a-dozen references to Akron's "weak schedule" and/or expressions of surprise that Akron is playing so well against ACC competition. They are definitely considering Akron to be the underdog, although as the game goes on they seem to be giving Akron more respect.Well Martino (who I believe played at UVa) was the one who picked the Zips to not get out of the regional. He's still not giving UA enough respect IMO.
  12. Maybe we did, I haven't heard any salary mentioned. And since no one has mentioned it, look what happened last time we took a coach from Notre Dame. That has exactly zero bearing on the current situation but I can't believe no one used that one yet. :)If Tom is right, we're all happy. If he's wrong, it will likely cost him his job down the road. I'm sure this was not something he entered into lightly. Gotta give Rob a chance. And JohnnyZip84, I can't believe you got that job after they called me as a reference, were any of the other candidates breathing? I'm pretty sure that I beat out a "Chuck Martin" for the gig. It's probably ANOTHER Chuk Martin though
  13. Here, here!
  14. Meister sighting in 5, 4, 3, 2........
  15. Will he be Pete Cordelli, Urban Meyer or (most likely) something in between? I'm not thrilled at all, mainly because I was really hoping for a D-2/FCS head coach. Someone stated on another thread that these hires are basically a crapshoot anyway. I vehemently disagree. I think there is significantly more risk of a "bust" in taking the approach that TW decided to take. This hire gives me two distinct impressions. First, I don't think he was TW's primary choice (Chryst perhaps?). I'm also somewhat disappointed that this has the appearance of a "buddy hiring". I just recently accepted a new position myself, and I have had zero prior personal contact with the people who hired me. I was selected solely on my expercience and qualifications. My references were no doubt scrutinized, etc. and my new employer decided I was the right person. I realize there is a "leap of faith" in the end, but I'm sure they did their due diligence in the process. I was hoping for a similar process here, but (though I could obviously be wrong) I don't think this occured. I believe anyone who takes the "buddy" approach in a situation like this severely limits the potential for finding the "great" hire. Maybe TW felt as if he needed to make a hire quickly because of recruiting etc. My answer to this is simple and borrowed (OK, stolen) from other sayings. I'd much rather hire the right guy at the wrong time, than hire the wrong guy at the right time.Still I am left with no choice but to hope for the best. I hope you can do it Rob. I hope you're a whole lot closer to Urban than you are to Pete. After all, I'm just a silly fan with no closer access to the situation than my computer and TV can provide. Go Zips!
  16. If that means "work week" anybody still coaching this weekend would probably be out
  17. They better hurry up. They need to be out there recruiting and meeting with the existing players to keep them at Akron.Exactly! The longer we wait, the more I think we're going after a BCS coordinator who might be able to bring along some recruits. If we wait too long and hire a lower-level coach he won't have the time to build a recruiting class. That's why I'm getting impatient.Maybe TW wants/needs to wait until after the D-2 Championship game this Saturday before he makes a final selection?
  18. Please nooooooooooooooooooI agree completely, but there is a possibility. I'm pretty sure that he has been contacted. He's never been more than a position coach, at any level. I think he's a candidate based almost completely on the fact that he's from Barberton.Uhhhh yeah, that has to be it
  19. Are we to assume the Penguin's anal centerline is horizontal in this problem? Of course this makes a significant difference in this classic problem of "rectum-linear" motion
  20. Sewell left off of all FOUR teams! Absurd.
  21. Here is some speculation that Princeton may be interested in Jim Fleming. If he's a relatively smart guy, maybe Will would go along and be able to play right away?LinkAlso, check out the mention of YSU/Stoops at the top of the page. Penguin fans seem to be getting a little nervous. I think some of these guys (Stoops, Butch Jones. etc.) are waiting to see what shakes out after ND and a few others name their coaches.
  22. Dan LeFevour isn't. Even though BUGS beat 'em up pretty good earlier in the season, Troy will be difficult down there. At least the MAC escaped the crazy scenario I saw forecast by a few sites heading into this weekend. I think with Notre Dame declining any bids, some folks had Ohio and BUGS playing in the Pizza Bowl. That would have been pretty silly.
  23. Akron didn't give the award. The MAC did. You shouldn't fault Akron. You sound like a crazy football mom...I could be wrong, but I believe ZIPFB#1 was saying that in jest.I agree with the Cap'n on this. I don't think many MAC coaches had their eyes and ears on Akron over the last half of the season. It's actually pretty surprising (to me) that UA landed so many players on these teams. I think it's some evidence that there IS talent on board here (subject of another thread).good times... joking on this side tooGotcha
