  1. Better yet, we can just schedule whoever won the national championship the year before. If Indiana is willing to come to the info, why not Florida?Edit: Seriously though, Akron and Buffalo could form an interesting rivalry. If both programs stay on the rise like they have been the past couple years, I could see both of us moving into a C-USA type conference together and furthering the rivalry.I agree completely. If the MAC were to ever split, the two existing members I would want UA to align themselves with most are Buffalo and Toledo. These schools have the most in common with UA's overall mission.Actually, I think if YSU ever made the jump to FBS then I would welcome a renewed rivalry with them. It's hard to imagine nowadays, but 20-25 years ago this rivalry easily had me as excited as the one with Can't.I doubt that it will continue much beyond the return game at the info in 2010 (especially when the Zips win up there again this year), but the series with Syracuse has been enjoyable.
  2. In order to defend a childhood favorite (I know, I'm old), may I petition the good Dr for just ONE exception?
  3. Va Tech was one of the last college teams to run the "wide tackle six". Maryland was another I believe. Maybe it's time for a re-birth, he said tongue in cheek
  4. I'm glad you posted this, MDZip, because I THOUGHT I heard this on the radio the other day but it kept me guessing. I think they mention another 1st name too, but Zippy is what stood out to me for obvious reasons.
  5. OK, I know this is practically unrelated, but this seems to be the most logical place for me to submit this comment/observation. Speaking of the Sounders, their ex-USL 1st Division Rivals (I realize that technically the MLS outfit is new) in Montreal put on quite a show in the CONCACAF Champions League Quarter-final opening leg earlier this week. They got permission to play in the "Big O" and they packed it with over 55,000 fans in a 2-0 victory over Mexican Club Santos Laguna. This has to be giving MLS commisioner Garber second thoughts about selecting St. Louis and Philly to get franchises ahead of Montreal. I've felt all along that Toronto FC with their great fan support would dovetail nicely with a Montreal MLS club.
  6. Not that we're assured of anything of course, but if I'm the top seed (whoever it is) I'd MUCH rather play U@B at this point as a #4 seed, than say Can't or OU.
  7. I was limited to following this on ESPN's ticker from the bar of an Old Chicago restaurant in Evansville, Indiana, but I didn'tlet that stop me from shouting a triumphant "yes" every time I saw the updated score with the Zips in the lead. After having seen that BG had beaten Can't, this was certaily welcome news. Then seeing OU blowing out Miami (not that I feel anything for the Bongcats) was the icing on the cake. Let's go Zips!!!! Let's go Zips!!
  8. I figure the question is probably rhetorical, but it did cause me to wonder. UA has been 1-0 only 6 times in the 1-A (FBS) era.Year Opponent Result1986 Salem 35-01990 Illinois St 17-71992 @EMU 27-91993 @CMU 23-13 you go Gerry!2001 Ohio 31-292007 Army (Cleve) 22-14As far as Akron area quality recruits are concerned, there are some of course but just not as many (on average) as there used to be. It's simple demographics......an aging and shrinking population.
  9. The troubling thing is the slow season ticket sales (3000 out of 10000 sold), but it's understandable with the economy. I suspected this was happening when I saw a "season ticket sales extended through March" promotion on the Route 8 electronic billboard the other day.
  10. I see a lot of good points have been brought up already. I agree wholeheartedly with uakronkid that the Temple situation should be dealt with immediately. It's all in or see ya. And if that leads to a "culling of the herd" then so be it. I DO like the fact that the MAC has a championship game in FB, and it's tough to have one of these with less than a dozen members. BUT, we need 12 commited schools in FB and in hoops as a minimum, for the conference to be strong in other sports. And if that means a little bit of a "shake up", I'm OK with that too. Perhaps Middle Tennessee and Western Ky would like to replace EMU and Temple (if they don't coopperate)?
  11. I believe you're right, skip-zip, but that was BEFORE the bowl season meltdown.
  12. I think it's pretty clear that MAC Men's hoops, at least during the period in which Akron has been a member (1992-present), has reached a low point. I don't even think it should be considered "mid-Major", at least until I see some marked improvement. The conference will be lucky to get a 14 seed in this year's NCAA's, and rightfully so. Nevertheless, I'm still pulling for these young Zips to be the best of a pretty sorry bunch.
  13. It's pretty sickening to be only by 5 right now.
  14. What is up with the center court only feed?
  15. I agree. When you shoot it like we have the 1st half, you should have a much bigger lead.
  16. Gotta love the scoring distribution right now. It's amazing. AKRON NO PLAYER FGM-A 3PM-A FTM-A PF PTS 23 B McKnight 2/2 1/1 1/2 1 6 33 · N Linhart 2/2 0/0 0/0 0 4 4 S McNees 1/1 1/1 0/0 0 3 12 · D Roberts 1/3 1/3 0/0 1 3 5 B McClanahan 1/1 1/1 0/0 0 3 13 · N Cvetinovic 1/1 0/0 0/0 1 2 24 · A Hitchens 1/2 0/1 0/0 1 2 32 J Conyers 0/0 0/0 2/2 0 2 54 M Bardo 1/1 0/0 0/0 1 2 30 · C McKnight 0/1 0/0 2/2 1 2 TEAM TOTALS 10/14 4/7 5/6 6 29
  17. I hope we can tighten up the D a little though. We're getting turnovers as usual but giving up a pretty good shooting %.
  18. I voted to deep 6 the 3-3-5, because I think anyone with MH should be playing in a 4-3
  19. There is an Akron, NY exit right on the I-90 New York Thruway on the way to Syracuse. I propose a pilgramage to the "other" Akron during the weekend of October 3. Maybe we can recruit a few new Zip fans
  20. What's easy to forget (for me anyway) when he (Charlie) and KD have these defensive wars, is that they were both former HC's at CMU. It's hard not to like and respect a guy like him, with the way he keeps going after all of the health issues he's endured.
  21. I had the same issues with Pollitz with just under 5 minutes left in the game
  22. I stumbled upon the same site a little while back. It is pretty amazing.Statsheet Link Near Bottom of Page
  23. Zips 38Sweaters 37Zips Win! gets ejected with 5 minutes to go and UA down by 6, but this merely spurs the Zips on down the stretch.
  24. No, no...its: "There saying that this is a grate higher over their, butt they're kneads two bee sum immediate results." Well Dunn! (Joe's long lost brother)Didn't Jackie Gleason (as Ralph Cramden) used to say "homonym, homonym, homonym"?
